Cracked Disc Problem?

Hello everyone,

I got the game nearly a year ago 2nd hand.  I have put roughly 25 hours into it, don't know how much time the previous owners put in.  I put it in for a bit of a multiplayer blast this morning.  When I removed the disc it had a crack.  The crack extends from the centre of the spindle through the plastic layer and very slightly goes into the holographic section.

When playing the game (8 player races) I noticed periods of slowdown which hasn't happened before.

I remember hearing reports of many of the RR6 discs being a bit cheaply made back when it came out (I'm in the UK by the way).  Does anyone know if this is a problem with the RR6 discs?  Or is it more likely my 360? I don't want to put other discs in and find that they all get ruined because I can't afford to rebuy them.  Would a cracked disc damage my machine?

Thanks.

Re: Cracked Disc Problem?
Ive had a few issues with this problem I put it down to the 360 cases and people not depressing the relase button in the box itself. I now keep all my games in a soft wallet for this ver reason. Rent the game and return the faulty one not that I would do that but im sure someone has :P.

Secondly do not play it in  youre 360 again as if the crack extends past roughly 1/4 up the disc it will split within seconds and potentially destroy youre 360.

Soz to hear about youre problms hope this was of some help.

I got the exact same problem with my gears of war. In the centre of the CD it has a crack on it. I could still play it but everytime I do my 360 acts funny. Also my PGR 3 is also showing a little crack on the centre too... so yeah. Anything I could do? By the way my gears was used while my PGR 3 is brand new...

Re: Re : Cracked Disc Problem?

Yeah there's a few topics on this sort of thing and after chatting to a few friends i've found it's a common thing, i have got through 2 gears of war games in the space of one week due to the disk cracking, it starts from the middle then gradually works it's way through the disk until it becomes unplayable, i thought after the first one cracked it was due to the amount of use it had as i play gears for long periods of time since i purchased it last november but i purchased a brand new one last week and the same happened to that after 5 days, i look after my games always have done so i don't understand why this is happening, i don't think it's to do with the box it comes in because friends who've had the same problem keep their games in slips, i've contacted microsoft and they've told me i need to send my xbox back to see if they can repair it so it must be something to do with the console.

Also since this has happened to my gears disks my xbox is struggling to read other games including brand new ones which have never been played.

Re: Re : Cracked Disc Problem?

After reading through all the results for “cracked disc” I thought I should add my experiences. I have had Crackdown for a fortnight when the console refused to read the disc any more. Further inspection showed a crack running from the centre of the disc through the hologram. I have always taken the disc out of the console when I've finished playing and always carefully place and remove it from the case. I've tried taking it back to Game who didn't want to know and I've contacted Microsoft, the customer service staff I spoke to wasn't very sympathetic and after discussing the merits of the 90 day warranty basically agreed with me it wasn't worth anything!

I can't see how I've been at fault – unless it was because I was using the game as described! It does seem that there seems to be something wrong with the discs, the cases or maybe a combination of the two and the temperature the discs reach whilst in the drive.

After two consoles gone bad and now this, I'm getting increasingly disappointed in the quality of Microsoft's products.

Re: Re : Cracked Disc Problem?

dont worry people i think im the worst off here! i am from the UK and i brought 4 games full price and they have all cracked and stopped working. i brought a copy of call of cuty 2 and it cracked and then brought another copy which also cracked. my other 2 games that had cracked were pro evolution soccer 6 and fight night round 3.they only lasted from 1 week - 2 months. They cost me £49.99 per game, which totals up to £199.96. that is disgusting, that amounts up to 2/3's of the price of the xbox 360. i contacted xbox and they kept saying take a pic of the discs and sent it us and i tried and gave them a ring telling them i cant take a clear pic cause its on the shiny metallic inner cricle and thier is 2 much glare and it is vitually impossible to take a pic. it is impossible when your even using a 7mp digicam. i rang xbox once again and i was told to take a pic of the discs again and i told them i cant its not clear and i was told just to take a pic and sent it. i am going to take a pic of the discs and send it. People if i am fobbed off 1 more time then i will be in touch with trading standards and watchdog. so people with the same problems keep your eyes on this section cause i could have important info to help us in the future regarding our "cheap" xbox 360 discs

Re: Cracked Disc Problem?
Ok,  there are many people who have this problem, and many who don't.  Here is what I believe is the solution.

Obviously, keeping the console horizontal is a good idea, it keeps the disc more stable, but this won't completely solve the problem..

I have heard that heat may cause he discs to crack, from the console heating and cooling, but I do not believe this is the problem.

What I believe is the problem is this:

As you may know,  microsoft had to get multiple manufacturers to make dvd drives for them because they needed alot at once.  Out of all of the disc cracking cases I have heard,  for the people that know what drive they have,  I have only heard of this happening with the samsung drive, which is what I have too.
Perhaps a replacement of a different type of drive (HITACHI, TOSHIBA....) would solve the problem?  Only thing is, to do this your self it would void your warranty and cost you about 200 bux for the drive.  This is retarted.  Should I give up and get a ps3?

look I went through 3 ridge racer disk and I have a HITACHI DRIVE...  so do not just replace your drive.. HERE IS 2 SOLUTIONS..
1. Buy new CD cases for your games.. Clear normal CD cases that are easy to take in and out of the case. This will prevent a crack somewhat but will be prone to more scratches which 360 games FAIL with any amount of scratches on them....

2. Buy a DL DVD burner.

Make copys of all your games and put them on your hard drive using the "HOT SWAP METHOD" do a google search.. I guess..

Then read how to "BACK UP YOUR XBOX 360 GAMES"

This will save you TIME, Money, and a lot of headache.

360 game cases and disks are simply "***"

You are allowed by law to have a backup of and CD/DVD so OBEY the law and make your self a BACKUP and use it.

IT WILL LAST LONGER AND YOU WILL ALWAYS BE ABLE TO MAKE A COPY OF YOUR ORGINAL IF YOUR BACKUP EVER FAILS..

Re: Cracked Disc Problem?
Funny this, the other week I read the title of this thread and that very evening i was playing RR6 again and it crashed/froze after some online gaming time, I thought my box/drive had died until I removed the disc and it booted fine again, and upon examination of the disc there it was a huge crack coming from the center. The disk is otherwise immaculate and is within the warranty period. The box has the Toshiba-Samsung drive aswell, not the Hitachi-LG unit.

I contacted  EA ( Electronic Arts ) who have simply brushed aside their warranty responsibility by passing the buck onto user error. As a result they have just lost my purchasing at least 3 other further EA published games shortlisted from the current play.com spring sale.
Further to this I will take the matter to other places like watchdog, if they recieve sufficient complaints about a product and the 360 has allready featured they will pursue the company.

The dvd case this game came with is not the same as any other 360 game box I have, I dont even think I have seen any xbox 1 titles in this type of case.

My local game stores (both the big 2 in the UK) staff both knew of this issue as a common problem although it is supposed to have been addressed recently and EA are well aware of the issue even if they wont admit to it.

There are several facts to consider.

1. Money is only made on games and other accessories, money is lost on the main console.
2. Its very easy to manipulate just about anything to have a limited survival rate (length of life), which today much money is spent on researching restrictive lifetimes while being inside a level of tolerance (life length voluntary/legal requirements) and optical media is not outside the scope of such manipulation and that includes supplying titles in certain cases with more awkward to use center retaining clips as well as the fact they all are usually just pushed back into place every time, also the plastic construction of the media itself can be varied tremendously and have effects on how easy its scratched to how easy it can just crack/split.
3. Even @ £10 GBP as a direct relacement from any publisher the publisher is making a profit.

Regardless of wether the above 3 facts do add up to anything more sinister than mere coincidence in this case the fact that EA one of the biggest players in the games publishing industry should take such a stance on a known issue and abuse their law abiding game purchasing clients in such a way is an absolute disgrace. Even outside any warranty period if goods begin to show faulty becasue they were unfit for the purpose they were intended then in the UK statutory legal rights do exist for some form of redress. Most companies simply hope most just do not pursue such rights becasue the time it takes over rides the value of the goods which may well end up being the case here.

However I will certainly be thinking long and hard before making future purchase where EA are the publishers and that goes on all platforms, from PC, xbox/360 PS# or nintendo, it also stands for any extras I may have considered for games I allready have from EA publishers.

Yep only the other day this happened to me.

My RR6 has a series of cracks in the middle and when playing on my 360 the game runs normally but the 360's fans stop! And for the first time the 360 is silent lol. Then after a while it started making grinding type noises!

Re: Cracked Disc Problem?
I have not had any problem with any of this until what I noticed yesterday.  As i took my Rainbow Six: Vegas game from my disc tray, I saw a tiny crack on my disc.  The crack was about 1/8" - 3/16" long coming from the center hole.  I have never seen a disc crack like that before.  I treat my stuff very well, otherwise the disc looks brand new, and I've had the game since the day it came out.  Is there some type of replacement policy that covers that?  Wondering if anyone else has had this problem.

No idea if it's caused by the heat of the 360.  I know it tends to get warm and make the discs quite hot.  I'm hesitant on putting that disc back in my box.  I don't want to damage anything by using a faulty disc.  I read about the disc replacement program from Microsoft. But, since this game is not published by Microsoft, it does not apply.  I feel this is a failure on the disc, and not due to any abuse by me.  I surely don't care to spend another $60 on the same game to replace.

I have had this problem twice with my games when removing game from case i discovered a crack from the center going about 1/2 a centimetre upwards. this has happened to my call of duty 3 and rainbow 6 vegas. i thing the discs are too fragile and it is p*****g me off. the game sare just too expensive to replace when this happens and i feel as though i can't take my games out the box without breaking them.

I had the same problem with RR6. i got the game second hand and started to go through the explored mored till i got half way through the master route. i was so close and then the disc stoped loading corectly. upon inspection, i found 3 cracks at the centre of the disk. they extended slightly into the holographic region which was causing the problems. i had to stop playing as if the disk would have split it could rip out the inside of the drive for the 360. in the end i bought another copy from a gemstore, swapped the disks and then complained about the cracks :). got a full refund and problem sorted. now i got a soft case to put all my disks in, just in case. how can these firms get this so wrong when we have been hapily using disks for more than a decade?

I called Ubisoft, and I am going to send in my Rainbow Six for a replacement for $15.  Not bad considering it's cheaper than $60.  I am past past the 3 month warranty so it will cost me.

After looking at the disc cases, I noticed that many of them are very, very tight in the center snap piece.  Not only that, but not all of them are the same.  There are quite a few different styles after I checked from game to game.  I plan on going out this weekend, and picking me up a nice DVD sleeve holder.  I hate to have to do that. because they do tend to get a little scratched sliding in and out of it, but it beats having to try to get replacement discs.  My guess is that the snap ring is causing the discs to break.  That and maybe a combination of a thin disc.

Yep, the same thing is happening to me. But for me its Oblivion, and this is my third copy of this game! The first one cracked in multiple places around the inside, the second had just one big crack going straight across the disc, and now I have one small crack on my new copy that I purchased only about two months ago. I called MS customer support and they told me it was because I was taking it out of the game case the wrong way, so now I have it in one of these paper cases, I don't know how long this copy is gonna last before it is unplayable but oh well, guess I'll just enjoy it while it lasts before I have to go buy a fourth copy of this game which brings it to a total of  200$ I've spent on Oblivion, not to mention, Shivering Isles, Mehrunes Razor, The Wizards Tower, The Thieves Den. and the horse armor pack that I bought through Xbox Live. :(

I think I'm gonna keep all my 360 games in CD cases from now on.

it will not work now it only shows the main menu and when i go on to the live menu it freezes

i think that before xbox even thought bout making the elite they should of made sure that their original one ia working properly.

I know what everyone is talking about.  I had PDZ crack in the center out.  I called microsoft and they replaced the disc with a brand new one, but about 5 months later the same game cracked again.  After the first game cracked we stopped putting the games inside their boxes, so I was puzzled as how did the second disc crack.  I think that the combination of cheap media and a poorly calibrated disc gripper inside the xbox 360 console are leading to the problems.  The funny thing is that I called microsoft back after the game cracked for a second time and they said that they have never heard of this problem.  I like microsoft, but I think that they are trying to nickel and dime all of their customers and by doing so are more concerned with customer profitability rather than customer satisfaction.

I bought a 360 second hand, and when i got it home they had left FIFA 07 in the console itself, before playing it i looked at the disk and there was not scratch let alone and crack, i have never had a case for it so ive been using a CD wallet to store it in, and out off all my games its the only one to have cracked and its the only one not being stored in its case. So in my opinion their "speech" about its your fault, your to heavy handed taking it out the case is ****.
Someone said up there about making back-up disks...thats not the point, you shouldnt have to make back-ups, the game should run fine with out the fear of cracking.
