Cant play full versions of Arcade Games

Ok I downloaded two live games before my 360 broke down and I had to send it in, Smash TV and Geometry Wars.  When I got the new 360 I recovered my Gamertag and redownloaded the two games.  But now whenever I go to play them it is only the trial version, the only way to play the full version is if Im hooked up to Live.  This is a problem because Im not always hooked up to live and I have to switch back and forth.

Does anyone know whats causing this, or a solution?

Re: Cant play full versions of Arcade Games

Am I the only one with this problem?  Can someone please try and help me out some.  I called 1-800-4MY-XBOX but the guy didnt know what he was talking about.  He claims that the arcade games can only be played when your connected to live, and thats just not true.  Before my replacement 360 I use to always connect to live, download the games and then disconnect and play them offline.

Anyway someone please help me....

Re: Cant play full versions of Arcade Games

Hey bud, I've got the same exact problem.  I don't have highspeed at my house so I took my Harddrive to my buddies to activate my gamertag and download a couple arcade games.  But for some reason when I'm back at the house I only have access to the Trial versions.  I've went back over to his house and hooked my xbox up to Live and it immediately shows that I have access to the full game.  If I put the dashboard on the games screen, and then my arcade games, and highlight one of the games it shows the regular full game display on the right, where your gamerscore and achievements show up.  If I leave it on the screen and physically disconnect the cable line from the xbox, my screen immediately shows the "Lost connection" notice and changes my full game to Play the Free Trial or whatever.  Very frustrating.  I"ve spent 2 hours with CS on the phone and they've been genuinely helpful and are trying to get this worked out for me.  They're trying to research why this is happening because they say it shouldn't be.  As proof that it probably shouldn't, my buddy can turn his xbox 360 and disconnect the cable connection and he still has access to the full games.  Very strange.  I'll let you know if I find anything out....

For both of you, I want to confirm you are using the game with a different console which is not the console the game was originally downloaded to correct?

Re: Cant play full versions of Arcade Games
Yes, that is true for me.  And that's the only thing that I can think of that could be causing the problem.  But since then I've taken my entire xbox over to my buddy's house, hoooked it up, re-recovered my gamertag (so that I could do it with my console in hopes that it would help), deleted my old downloads, redownloaded one of them, and the same thing is happening.  I'm still working with CS on the issue as they all say that it should work just fine offline, to which I agree because I've seen my friend do exactly what I'm trying to do.  The only thing different that I can think of is that when I first recovered my gamertag, the very first time, it was through the use of my Harddrive on another console.  I'm wondering if creating a whole new gamertag and starting over from scratch with a new account would fix this problem.  I'll let you guys know if anything new comes up...

Re: Cant play full versions of Arcade Games
Hey there, just wanted to post an update on my personal research into this problem.  I've been able to duplicate it simply by taking any harddrive and moving it to another xbox.  When doing this, all bought arcade games show as the full version as long as the xbox is signed in to live...but as soon as its taken offline, all bought arcade games revert to trial versions.  So, I'm assumng that either the game itself is tagged and looks for your specific console in order to play offline or your profile itself determines whether its on its home console or not.  I imagine this is an intentional feature to block folks from moving gamer profiles and arcade games to other xboxes so that people can play arcade games without purchasing them.  That's the only thing I can think of.  Anyway, just wanted to share...I'm off to see what CS can do about either wiping out my old account so I can start completely over from scratch or whether I need to create an entirely new one and start over.  I'll post results.

You will only get the full games on your own xbox or someone else's xbox connected to live with your gamertag. It is a security feature. Your friends can demo it but will need to buy the full version. Remember almost everything is connected to your gamertag.

Re: Cant play full versions of Arcade Games

Yep, customer service in Games/Hardware confirmed this for me yesterday evening.  Now, what to do?  They've recommended my next course of action as putting my harddrive back on my friends xbox and deleting the downloaded games and their save information, putting the harddrive back on my xbox, make sure that they are indeed deleted, then redownload them again with my harddrive and console.  But I'm wondering if its the game itself that checks the console serial number or if its my gamertag and profile that do that.  If its the former then I guess their suggestion should take care of the problem.  But if its the gamertag/profile, how can I clear that and start over?  Would it just be a matter of re-recovering my gamertag with my console?  I've already done that one time but it didn't seem to fix the problem...hopefully its the former.

And I'm not sure how any of this is gonna help you Cloudpiercer, because if I understand correctly, you've already re-recovered your gamertag and redownloaded the games on the new box haven't you?  And that's when your problem started.  That makes it sound like once you download an arcade game, your online account remembers your console serial number and always downloads your games for that console.  Maybe that's way off base, but that's the only thing I can think of, if you were sent a whole new xbox and everything and you're having the problem.  Anyway, I'll try to get back over to my friend's house this evening and post results of the new procedure tonight.

Re: Cant play full versions of Arcade Games

This is what I understand regarding this issue:

Usage Restrictions when you downloaded the Xbox Live Arcade game*: The item you are trying to download is subject to use restrictions. You can use this item on the first Xbox 360 console that you used to download it. Access to this item will also be granted to all users on this first console. If you transfer the item using a memory unit or other storage device, you will also be able to use it on Xbox 360 consoles, but you'll need to sign in to Xbox Live with your Xbox Live account on that console before accessing the item.

Xbox Live still ties downloaded content to the first console it was downloaded to like the Xbox 1 did. However, with the Xbox 360 you can "move" this content from console to console as long as you are logged into Xbox Live on the other console to verify ownership. It's something people requested for the first console that is able to be done for the Xbox 360.

Therefore, you will not be able to play your purchased games offline on a console that was not the original unit without being signed into Xbox Live.

You both will need to contact us again at 1-800-469-9269 for additional suggestions and help.

* Please be sure to always read over the Usage Restrictions in the menu selection before you choose to purchase the Marketplace content.

Ok, well thats pretty messed up then.  I payed for these games and just because I was unlucky enough to get a system that was defective, I can only play them when Im on Live now?  Even if I did read the Usage Restrictions I would have still downloaded the games, I didnt expect my first 360 to stop working.  I understand why they made it like that, but there should be something in place for someone in my position.

Ive been waiting for a solution to this problem for nearly a week, and now I found out there isnt one.  And the reason is because the first system I camped out for all night broke, and now I'm paying the consequences for a defective product.

Re: Cant play full versions of Arcade Games

Okay, still no definitive answers on HOW to fix this problem now that we know what it is.  By the way, thanks Lucky 13X for checking into this for us.  I've put in a very frustrating 3.5 hours with customer service over 5 different telephone conversations....all for a 5 dollar game.  Still no one has a fix for this yet.  I understand, I screwed up by putting my harddrive on another's xbox (I was just trying to keep from moving my xbox around so much, had no idea this would be an issue)...I just want to figure out how to play Geometry Wars full version now.  The most frustrating thing is that I've had to explain this situation completely from scratch every single time I call in (even after giving my call reference number) because no one in Customer Service has heard of this problem.  This is followed by a lot of them putting me on hold why the research the problem only to come back and tell me to try something that I've already tried to tell them that I've tried.  I can't fault them but so much, they've been genuinely interested in trying to help me out its just that none of them know what to say.  I've even had a couple agents flat out tell me things that just aren't true.  Those calls take the longest, the ones where I have to convince them that yes, typically you CAN play these games offline.  I've even had to explain what the marketplace arcade games were to one agent!

Sorry, had to vent that for second.  As it stands now, they think my Harddrive is defective and want to send me a new one.  I completely disagree, because I can download Geometry wars right now on my harddrive and play it offline on my buddies console.  They've told me to delete it from my harddrive and redownload it on my console.  When it do that, it doesn't play offline on my console or my buddies console.  But if I delete it and then download it onto my harddrive attached to my buddies console (as I did initially), I can play it offline on his console.  The problem has something to do with the fact that my online profileor account remembers what games I've downloaded, because even when I delete them from my harddrive and redownload, it doesn't charge me any Microsoft Points.  Which makes me believe that I'm just redownloaded that same game, tagged for his console, every time regardless of which console I'm on.  I believe that if there were some way to make my account "forget" which games I've purchased, erase my purchase history I guess, that a redownload on my console would work.  This is, so far in my mind, the only explanation that could cover what's happening to me and Cloudpiercer.  I mean, Cloudpiercer had a whole new console and harddrive when he downloaded, and its doing it to him too.  That makes me believe that its the online account that is remembering which console we've downloaded to and its giving us the same download each time...unfortunately for him his original console is no longer in his possession but is back with Microsoft due to defects.  That's the next step I'm gonna try to talk to CS about, but I'm really dreading the 1 hour phone call, starting over from scratch explaining what happened.

Re: Cant play full versions of Arcade Games

Hey Cloudpiercer, just wanted to update you on all that I've learned and what I had to do to fix it.  I finally got a customer service supervisor that was really good and helped me out (after a grand total of 5 hours with CS).  Turns out, like I was saying before, once you download games your online account remembers your download history and which console (serial number) you've downloaded the game for.  Now this is information that is stored in your account online.  So for me, and unfortunately you too, everytime you try to redownload one of those games you bought with your old console, its just sending you the same exact download tagged for that console...even though you're on a new one.  I bet its not charging you for the redownload either...it wasn't me.  Unfortunately, the supervisor said that there wasn't a way to erase your download history from your account on their end.  Your account will always remember those downloads.  So the only fix we could come up with was to create a whole new passport account with a new gamertag and start anew.  She was kind enough to transfer my MS Points over to the new account so that I wouldn't lose them.  Everything works fine now.  It wasn't a big deal for me since I didn't have any saved games on that profile (none that mattered anyway) but it might be a bigger deal for you.  The only thing I can think to try is to keep pushing and make sure there's no way for them to erase your download history from your account.  If they could do that it would solve your problem as well without losing your save game information.  Hope this helps a little and good luck getting your particular situation straightened out.  Have a good Christmas everybody....

That still doesn't address the fact that the content that was paid for will not work properly on the boxes that have been exchanged by MS.

This being the case........If I paid for something that doesn't work as it should and MS exchanges it for another one with a different serial number, how do I go about getting a refund?  Be it for the Marketplace points that were spent on the games or for the console??
