Why your threads get locked, deleted, moved etc?

I see that a few things get overlooked here despite the pinned announcements, stickies, FAQs etc. so I wanted to share a few quick things with viewers of the Xbox 360 forum concerning why your threads get locked, deleted, moved etc.

There are always easy ways to identify this ofcourse by simply reading over the Forum FAQ among other pieces of information.  But I'll cut to the chase and give you a few "no brainers" that you may refer to from time to time.  These are just a few and certainly not all of the reasons for any thread moderation.

Why was my thread locked, deleted, or moved?

1 - There was already a thread on the same subject.

2 - There was a forum created for that particular subject (you posted in the wrong forum)

3 - The thread was there for no other purpose than to cause flaming, trolling etc.

4 - The thread was off topic and didn't pertain to the Xbox 360.

5 - The thread was attacking other members, included profanity, had inappropriate links, was just ranting.

6 - You bump your own thread within minutes of posting and you keep bumping it when no one replies.

7 - You made the same thread about the same subject with the same comments in another forum or on another day.

8 - You made a thread asking why your thread was locked or deleted or moved.

9 - The thread was a petition thread and petitions are not allowed in any shape or form no matter the cause.

10 - The thread was a comparison thread or what the locals recognize as (pick a console) vs Xbox 360 threads.  These types of threads cause flame wars of a violent nature and are not allowed. (See #3)

11 - You started a quote pyramid.  A quote pyramid is a series of unnecessary multiple quoting within a thread.

How can I prevent this?

1 - Use the search button before you post.

2 - Browse the first few pages of the forum before posting your subject if search isn't working.

3 - Control your thread by keeping it on topic.

4 - Contact a moderator or Xbox MVP for any questions about your thread.  You can click on Options at the bottom of each forum to see if there is a moderator or Xbox MVP currently browsing.

I'll work with Trixie on getting a list of all moderators and Xbox MVPs so that it's easier for you all to know who your moderators and Xbox MVPs are.  Until then, you can get familiar with a few I've listed just in case you run into an issue.  I think it's important to know the people administering your threads and conduct etc.

I hope this helps you all get familiar with the current team.

Good idea, Deac.  This question seems to come up far too often.

Good thread, it should be common sense, but some people don't seem to have that.

Does goverland still mod? I know he never posts (in this section) also I don't care if you posted this in a high volumed forum section this should be moved to Xbox FAQ ... lol.

while I agree it should be pinned, the problem is that people who miss the fact that their post was locked because there are 80 other topics going on with the same thing, will not even see the pinned post.

Maybe if this message (or the search page) came up right when you click on "create new topic" we could get somewhere :)

What would you say is an efficient amount of time to bump your own thread? I would say about 1 hour.

yeah i've bumped my own threads before after a few hours etc. mostly what i do though if i create a thread in the AM, i'll bump it for the PM crowd. so that often carries over a few hours ya know.  but an hour is good.  but bumping repeatedly within a 10 minute span is a tad much.

Sad, but true for both. Good FYI Deac. Maybe these should be made into "Forum Laws", similar to the "Xbox360 Laws" Wink [;)]

I beleive the forum guidelines say it's not acceptable to 'bump' your own thread more than once in a 24 hour period (due to lack of replies).  Replying to other posts in it is fine, but don't repeatedly bump a thread that seems to be 'dying'.

Sometimes I'll resort to having conversations with myself (Sort of like Gollum in Lord of the Rings) in order to keep a post bumped.  Is this okay?  Stick out tongue [:P]
