Disk is unreadable
I get this on occasion.  It has happened in NASCAR too.  Is anyone else getting quite a bit more of them than normal?  I'm about to send my box in to get repaired because I thought the drive was going haywire, but if lots of others are getting the disk unreadable error maybe its just the game.  Is it even possible for the coding to cause this because its a brand new disk?

It's the game, man.  Don't send your system in unless it's happening with other games as well.

Re: Disk is unreadable
I've had it happen a few times -- more often than other games by far.  I might bring it in and exchange it if it continues.  Sometimes disk data can be corrupt and cause errors like this even though the disk itself looks impeccable.

Re: Re : Re: Disk is unreadable

I just got this game and I'm on my 2nd copy. I havent got any dirty disc errors, but the disc is extremely loud when it spins. My 2nd copy is really loud, too. Its so bad that I don't even want to play this game. It seems that I have to be lucky to get a perfectly balanced disc anymore, but this nhl 08 is by far the worst.

I am having the same issues. I am on my second copy of the game. I thought it was the game but I went to the store and exchanged it. I was fine up until a few minutes ago and now I cannot get the game to start. I get the error message during the load screen at the beginning of the game now. I am unsure of what to do know.

If it were the console it would be happening with other games, it doesn't.

After I posted last night, I played the game without the hard drive and it worked fine. I then reattached the hard drive and I was ok to play. When I got done I went to the dashboard. I then tried to go back into NHL and got the same error. I am not saying it is not my system but this is the only game it is happenning tol

Re: Re : Re: Disk is unreadable
I'd say exchange it again -- maybe it's just bad luck or maybe there were a batch of bad copies made.  EA will get the message if a whole pile of their games get returned to them.
I returned my copy to EBgames today, told them it was getting disk read errors and said that I figured it was corrupt data.  They gave me a new copy.  I haven't had the problem since.

Check my last comment -- I started having the problem again -- returned the second disc, got the problem again with the third disc.  Maybe EA will get the idea if I just keep returning discs and they keep losing that potential sale?

Its not the disk, my guess is it has to do with the roster updates. I didnt update the roster update and havent been getting errors nearly as often as most people.  Also clearing the cache every week or so helps a lot!

Re: Vs: Re: Re : Re: Disk is unreadable
The problem is caused by an update to the system that Microsoft has done. Lots of different games have this problem. Clear your cache and don't download any updates for the console when asked. Some of us gets the game to work perfectly by letting the console start up to the dashboard before we start the game instead (either by turning off autostart, start the console without the game disc in it or by starting it by opening the DVD drive and let it start up to the dashboard).

Yabob is potentially right. The theory is it was the MS spring update that EA didnt account for. EA's test machines probably didnt have this update and thats how it passed testing, it probably ran flawlessly for them for the most part.

I think it could also be a bad batch of discs from the pressing factory, its happened before. But it is for sure not the console as in hardware, my unit is a refurb and runs fine.

HOWEVER, does everyone elses console make a weird grinding noise when first turned on with a disc in the drive? My old 360 didnt do this, this one does....

Re: Vs: Re: Re : Re: Disk is unreadable
Well it happened again tonight -- the first game immediately AFTER clearing the cache.  So I don't know what the h*** to do.  It's very annoying sicne I now have a DNF of 10% and it's entirely not my fault.  I never quit even if I'm getting wasted 6 - 1.

I have noticed one thing with the error.  Once the disk error happens, I back out to the dashboard, eject the disk, and re-enter it, without resetting the console.  I can then play many consecutive games without getting the error.  It's like it somehow clears the problem after the game crashes.  It's got to be some sort of memory problem.

Yes, mine does too. Following certain "good-care" guides of your xbox to minimise it ruining your discs, it's recommended to go to the dashboard and then take the disc out when you're finished playing, instead of leaving the disc in the machine.

Leaving or taking out the game after playing has no effect whatsoever.

Re: Disk is unreadable

A bunch of times that I have been playing nhl 08 my system gets quiet, I hear a few clicks, and then it states my disk is unreadable.  I have returned the game for another copy, but did not resolve the issue.  My system does not do this with any other game!  Very annoying.

Re: Disk is unreadable
Well, I'm glad it's not only me... sounds like the disc stops spinning, then I get the DDE and some quiet clicking... my disc has some small scuff marks on the bottom now, which I believe come from the drive, since I've only used the game once or twice.

It's a frustrating problem, and has only happened with one other game (without the clicking). That game was NHL 2K7. Apparently my 360 hates hockey (like someone else in this thread, 2K7 worked fine when I tried it without the hard drive).

My 360 has once "spun down" with skate., as well, but picked back up on its own...

I'm sure my Box will one day give up the ghost, but it seems to me like this might be a problem specific to certain games... very frustrating.

Re: Disk is unreadable

Yeah mine quiets down, makes the strange noise then gives me the error. Other games do similar, I can hear the disc slow dramatically and I can hear it reading, but it never does disc error, only on nhl 08.

But I just got my disc resurfaced and while I was playing the disc slowed down but it never gave the error. But it still does the error

I just had the disc un-readable error 3 times in 6 games.  It only happens for me on this game.  If EA doesn't fix this soon i am geting 2K8.  This is starting to **** me off.

Re: Disk is unreadable
Canadaman its a system/memory issue, nothing to do with the game.  Ive played about 60, 10min games and got the error twice.  I also got the error tonight on PGR4 so it just shows its not an NHL 08 problem.

I finally got my xbox back from a three week repair (console number 4) and just the "disc is unreadable" error pop up.  First time, and no loud noises coming from my xbox.
