Honest opinions ~ CSI:HE Reviews ~ Buy? Rent? Look here first!

I'm hoping that we can gather some honest opinions on this game so that people have a central place to look, and hopefully we can stave off the usual "should I get this game?" posts and provide assistance to people considering checking out this new CSI title on their 360.

So...have at it... what do you guys think so far?

I have played every previous CSI game and every game has been fantastic but very short, maybe 1 or 2 hours a case with 5 cases. HOWEVER I have never played it with a controller so I figure it may take a bit longer on the 360 to navigate. The graphics have never been fantastic but the stories and voice acting are always superb. My copy didnt come today but came tomorrow and i would be suprised if i dont have it beat by sunday Big Smile [:D] I love CSI

I have it, I'm on the 2nd crimescene now. Not a bad game, don't think it will win any awards or anything but if you are a fan of the show and this type of game then you should pick it up. I also recommend renting the game instead of buying it because the replayability is low and there are only five scenes to get through. On the plus side the game is only $40. I also recommend turning off most of the in game options that help you w/ the scene, otherwise the game kinda holds your hand and directs your collecting and such.

Re: Honest opinions ~ CSI:HE Reviews ~ Buy? Rent? Look here first!
OK i have beat the game and xenocidic asked me to write a review so here is a quick review, coming from a CSI fan

Graphics: 2/5
The graphics are acceptable, this game isnt going to beat Gears of War and really doesnt set out to. The CSI team look like their real life counterparts and the areas look very good but graphics are a bit bare and some of the facial animation is bad. Dont be put off by the graphics though, this ISNT a graphics dependant game

Audio: 5/5
Excellent voice acting, really superb from almost every character and very atmospheric background music. All of the male CSI members use their TV voice actors, while Catherine and Sara use proffessional soundalikes. Saras voice isnt very good but Catherines is.

Story: 5/5
The stories are really excellent, and will have you guessing all the way until the conclusion. The writing is fantastic, it feels like a real show. There and twists and turns along the way and some very clever points.

Gameplay: 4/5
If you have played a previous CSI game this is really no different. Visit crime scene, collect and process evidence, question suspects and eventually get your man, or woman. There is quite alot of backtracking which can get you stuck as sometimes the answer isnt really obvious but there is a generous help system incase you cant go any further.

Lifespan: 1/5
You'll play it once, and never again and it could be beaten in a day. There are bonuses for beating the game without using hints, collecting all evidence and finding Grissoms bugs on each level, but the bonus content is so abysmal you really have no incentive to replay

Achievement Difficulty: 0/5
Beat each mission for whopping 200gs each mission, and you can use as many hints as you like. Not much thought went into the achievements, but perhaps Telltale games figured they would get more sales with easy achievements for those who love achievements.

Overall I had a fantastic time and would suggest you rent this game, as $40 is alot of money for 10 hours of play. If you can pick it up for less then its worth a purchase, and overall I would highly recommend this game.

probably because some of us gamers enjoy a variety of games at a time and not just 1. just beause halo 3 came out doesnt mean put down all the games and obsess over it. i plan to pick this up when i get back from vacation. my wife and myself love CSI along with the other good shows (Law and Order:SVU and Law and Order:CI....maybe games about these will be out soon too...i can only hope) and i dont mind paying for this game since my wife will actually enjoy playing this as well easy or not.

Like the guy above said, variety is the spice of life.

Also CSI is a game that two people can co-operate on even if the other person isn't video-game savvy.

Maybe because people are finally starting to realize what a crap game Halo really is.

For the record, I haven't played the CSI game, but I'd easily play it before I ever thought about playing Halo 3.

GameSpot has given this game a "Mediocre" 5.5 out of 10.

The review is quoted below for your perusal.can be found at http://www.gamespot.com/xbox360/adventure/csi4hardevidence/review.html?sid=6180423

Please note it contains some mild spoilers about the victims that you will have to highlight if you want to read them.

Summary: Hard Evidence offers few surprises and even fewer challenges throughout its five undemanding murder mysteries.

The Good: Quality of the writing has seen a significant jump over the previous games.

The Bad:

    * Solving the mysteries is painfully easy and kind of boring
    * Character models look awful
    * No new gameplay elements compared with every other CSI game.

Main article:

Playing Ubisoft's CSI games has always felt more like taking part in a truncated version of one of those cheesy murder mystery getaway weekends than actually solving a realistic crime. At every turn, these games find ways to clue you in on and push you toward exactly what you need to do next to proceed. You don't so much investigate as you go through a number of mundane motions to get to the predetermined conclusion. There's no threat of failure, nothing even remotely resembling a challenge to be found. They are less games and more mediocre episodes of the TV show that require button presses to unfold. CSI: Crime Scene Investigation: Hard Evidence is the fourth game in the series, and it doesn't diverge one bit from the formula laid down by its predecessors.

[ Screenshot byline: Hard Evidence is a mildly ironic subtitle given how stupid easy this game is. ]

There are five cases to solve in Hard Evidence, with victims ranging from an immolated racist cab driver to an electrocuted '80s rock group on a reality show that more than closely resembles Rock Star: INXS from a couple of years ago. As always, it's up to you to solve the crimes using the scientific tools of the trade you've likely seen on the CSI TV show. You'll be plucking bullets out of walls and matching them to various guns, dusting for finger prints, taking casts of footprints and tire treads, and even swabbing semen stains off of used condoms. No one ever said the life of a CSI was a glamorous one.

The main problem with Hard Evidence--and it's the same problem that every CSI game has ever had--is that it's so unbelievably easy. Every ounce of thought or legitimate investigation is separated from the mix, creating a sort of paint-by-numbers murder mystery. All you have to do is poke around each location, wait for your cursor to turn green to dictate that, yes, there's something for you to look at there, and then click on it. The game even decides exactly how you should collect every piece of evidence, and the most thought you have to put into it is something along the lines of "should I use ninhydrin or luminol to detect blood on this particular surface?"

If for some reason you ever do get stuck, it usually doesn't take long to figure out which scene you missed something at, since a big green checkbox goes over every piece of evidence and every scene you've investigated completely. If it doesn't have the checkbox, you missed something. Beyond that, all you have to do is make sure you've asked every question to every suspect. And if you're still somehow stuck, you can just ask any of the tagalong CSI characters for a hint. It "counts against your evaluation" at the very end, but that evaluation doesn't really mean anything.

The one nice thing you can say about Hard Evidence is that the writing is at least considerably better than in the last game, 3 Dimensions of Murder. That game was predictable beyond belief, essentially telegraphing who each culprit was long before the endgame. Hard Evidence does no such thing, and the storylines are actually thoughtful and a bit perplexing at times. Solving them may be a breeze, but you won't necessarily guess who did it until the evidence finally comes together at the very end. It's not quite as sharp as the writing on the show, but it's a heck of a lot closer than ever before.

Unfortunately, while the writing may be solid, the presentation of the cases leaves a lot to be desired. Several of the voice actors from the show reprise their roles in fairly lazy fashion, and the few who don't (namely Marg Helgenberger and Jorja Fox) are replaced with actors doing lousy impressions of the characters. The remaining voice actors are equally sedate or hammy, with no middle ground to speak of. The game's graphics are an even bigger point of contention. All the characters look mildly mutated, and the facial animation is extremely poor. The lip-syncing for the dialogue doesn't match up at all, and all the characters have these really creepy eyes that move around in a really unsettling way. The environments aren't bad, but apart from hunting around for hidden blood stains and bullet holes, you're not going to spend much time appreciating the aesthetic qualities of the area you're in.

One additional blight on the game's presentation is its insistence on shoving advertisements and product placement down your throat. For example, when you get a vehicle to search, it's not just a car. It's a Chrysler branded car with more Chrysler logos to discover than should be humanly possible. Every single location you search in the game has some area to click on with an HP HDTV in it. And the Visa ads...oh god, so many Visa ads. Not only are there billboards for the company everywhere, the writers even inserted Visa into the dialogue in one of the cases! Captain Brass actually refers to the "good people" at Visa and talks about their card monitoring services. Basic ads are one thing, but this game crosses a line or two or three.

[ Screenshot byline: The sheer number of Visa, Chrysler and HP ads in this game is painful to behold. ]

Hard Evidence is the first CSI game to appear on the PC and Xbox 360 simultaneously. The games are near identical, save for the predictable interface differences. The PC version has a leg up on the 360 version, simply because it's a lot easier to click around the various menus and tools using a mouse and keyboard than an Xbox 360 controller. It has another leg up on top of that, given that it's $10 cheaper than the 360 game. At the same time, if you're some kind of Xbox 360 achievements nut, Hard Evidence might just be the breeziest 1,000 points you'll ever earn over the course of a six-hour game. There are no tricky points here. Just beat all the cases, and you'll get them all.

If you've already invested in the previous CSI games, you're not going to find anything new or exciting here in the gameplay department. All you'll get are five brand-new cases that you will solve exactly the same way you did in the previous games. If that's enough for you, then by all means, give Hard Evidence a shot. However, more discerning players looking for something vaguely resembling a challenge would do best to skip this one.

Re: Honest opinions ~ CSI:HE Reviews ~ Buy? Rent? Look here first!

OK, I own all of the previous CSI games for the PC so obviously I am a fan.  This game plays exactly like the other games, HOWEVER, with it being a 360 release it is about double the price.  My honest opinion is that you should rent the game rather than buy it since it can be beaten in under 10 hours.  Furthermore it does not really offer much replay value (unless you have a short term memory).

That being said, this is a fun game.  If you are a hardcore fan of CSI or even point and click adventure games, you will probably enjoy this game.  The voice acting is very good (most of the original actors do the voices) and the cases are fun to solve.  The cons are that the graphics are not very good.  The characters are creepy looking and their mouths move weird.  Furthermore, the game tends to hold your hand too much and it doesn't really let you figure stuff out for yourself.

I am really hoping that one day they will completely revamp the CSI games and make you responsible for solving even more aspects of the crime (such as motive).  It would be even better if each case had several possible outcomes.  And how you handle the case would determine which outcome you receive.  For example, say you process evidence wrong, or misinterpret something, or fail to collect a piece of evidence altogether, it would be awesome if it was possible for you to accidentally implicate the wrong person.  This game does not allow you to mess up, which can be a good thing, but ultimately it makes the game way too easy.  On a positive note, Hard evidence is a little more in-depth than previous CSI games when it comes to exploring the crime scene, but oddly, it is less challenging when it comes to processing evidence (with the exception of fingerprint analysis).  This makes processing evidence boring and repetitive.

Even still, this game was worth a rental for me and I did enjoy it.  I hope my comments help and sorry for the long post! =D

Re: Honest opinions ~ CSI:HE Reviews ~ Buy? Rent? Look here first!

I have never watched CSI, so when told about this i thought hmmmmm maybe a game that will keep me entertained for awhile, but to my surprise this has to be the easiest game in terms of achievements and gameplay. I started out with all the intentions of being a CSI, looking or should i say trying to look everywhere for clues and basically playing cops and robbers on my 360. After an 1 hr or 2  i had finished the 1st mission with all insects found, and all thoroughness points achieved and this is where i was greatly upset.I didnt recieve anything for going out of my way to find everything, just some videos and insects in a case. Telltale Games have in my opinion taken some heavy liberties in releasing this game, they have put no thought into the achievements aspect and gone for a "quick buck" game.

If you want 1000 points without any hassles RENT this game, if you want a game to keep you occupied (in my humble opinion) FORGET this game. DON'T buy this game thinking i will play this for ages as you WILL be disappointed. My copy of this game will be given to my friend and never spoken about again like a wayward nephew or THAT uncle everyone knew was weird. This is a game that once you've finished it you WILL be asking for your money back.. You Have Been Warned.....

No problem !... If you want to talk directly to someone you can send them a Private Message (PM button), but not many people read their private messages.

Anyways, here's a walkthrough for the game, you should be able to get past that hitch you've encountered -

No, it's not a true co-op. I just meant like you said, the other person can look on and give suggestions or point out evidence you might have missed. Mind you, I could only see that being enjoyable for the person if they were not very video-game savvy (wife/girlfriend) and they like CSI.

it was a rental for me. took about 11 -12 hrs to beat, seeing as you're going to sit through a lot of dialogue to figure out what's going on in each case. interesting and not that bad if you like CSI.

i was annoyed at using the 360 controller for a point and click game like this. on top of that, 39.99 is a quite a lot for this type of 360 game. most of the pc ones start at $29.99 i think and have dropped to less than $20 (saw some for 7.99 at target a few months back). that's a bit more reasonable.

but it has the potential to be a better experience on the wii or ds.

I got the game today and it's ok. I completed the first case in about 2 hours but it seemed so much longer than that. I also got bored quite afew times, but wanting to see who commited the crime kept me playing. I can't see myself sitting and completing a case and moving onto the next. I'll probably complete 1 case a day untill I've done all 5.

Are you sure it was CSI: Hard Evidence you saw for $7.99 a few months back?  Because this game just came out for the PC at the end of September and there are 4 other CSI games available for the PC (Including one CSI: Miami game).  So I am thinking it is one of the older CSI games you saw for so cheap.

I dunno, I personally don't mind paying $20 for a CSI PC game, I mean, the cheaper the better, but if I can't wait for a game to drop down in price, $20 is a steal.  Creating a game is by no means cheap, so I don' complain too much.  However, I am really happy that I rented this game because they didn't really add anything to the game to make it worth the $40 Xbox 360 pricetag.

On the other hand, I am really happy they made this game for the 360, because I am a huge fan of point-and-click adventure games but my computer can no longer handle the system requirements for alot of the new games coming out.  So I really hope they keep releasing more of them for the consoles.

Overall score from me, 5/10 I'm afraid. Not the best game I've played this year.

however, this new CSI game is just boring.  if you've never played a CSI game, perhaps you will enjoy it.  but everything about the game seemed rushed.  i mean there really isnt much memory the designed had to use up for gameplay so you'd think they'd spend more time on the graphics.  nope.  this game barely rival the gamecube.  anyway, the game is propably the easiest 360 game and you can tell they through on the xbox port as a last minute considering the control are silly.  do not buy this game.  if you enjoy it good for you.  but i have the previous games and this one is the worst.  if you're looking for a better CSI game, get Dark Motives.

i am finding it hard to finish this game (for achievements) considering it's boring and repetisious.

yeah it was one of the older ones. i think it was 3 dimensions of murder?

even though i hate the 360 controller for point and click, i'm in the same boat. my pc is like 7 years old and not happy with newer games. i just wish you could up the cursor speed a bit. ahh but i beat it...overall it was fine.

Yeah the cursor tends to be pretty sluggish when you're using a controller.  Actually the Wii would probably work well with point-and-click adventure games :)

I wasn't really that crazy about that game.  It started off good but it really didn't have very many puzzles.  Most of the plot advances were done through talking to people which just seems tedious and boring.  The last adventure game I considered to be pretty decent was Still Life.  Well, and the Nancy Drew series, which are actually pretty solid adventure games (and NO, I'm not twelve years old, LOL).  I dunno, I don't keep up with them like I used to because I don't have the best computer but it seems like I'm often disappointed with the ones I do play.  I think part of the problem is that most of them have to be imported from other countries and I think that they lose a bit of their luster in the translation process (this is what I think happened with The Moment of Silence).  Either that, or they are developed by independent companies with small scale budgets.

Haha, anyways, there's my gripe.  I'll just sit here and wait for them to come out with another Monkey Island installment or Day of the Tentacle 2 Embarrassed [:$]

it wasn't really that hard, well the last puzzle was really hard in my opinion, but i thought it had a very interesting.

but it was gold compared to all the csi/cold case type adventure games that have been coming out.
