The xbox live site listed it but I did not see it available in the marketplace.

It is sweet, it brings back some serious, serious memories.

The controller is a little clunky, but once you get used to it, it will be a blast to the past for many of you.  Just the sounds alone...

Defenitely worth the 5 bucks.

Thanks very much AMW.

I am currently downloading Tron and will be playing it soon. I have been waiting for this game for a while, I played it quite a bit when it was in the arcades, and while I do know it is difficult to match the original arcade experience, I look forward to playing it on my 40" 1080p HDTV.

Thanks again for the heads-up.

End of line

Pretty shabby in my opinion. They didn't really get the controls right and the sound is absolutely abysmally glitchy.

Just got through playing some Tron about 10 min ago.

In my opinion the controls are pretty easy for the game, except the spinner is sometimes a little slow. But as you said AMW, this game is a blast from the past. The sounds are almost spot on from what I remember about the arcade version. The graphics look identical to the arcade version, although as with many of the original titles like Missle Command, Asteroids, and Time Pilot, I would prefer an option to turn off the cabinet art feature and play the game full screen. The enhanced graphics are ok, but I still prefer the default setting.

I would say my initial impression overall is 8 out of 10, a great game for 5 bucks. Have not played multiplayer yet.

You can choose 'Absolute Aim' in the control settings and have more accuracy with the spinner.

Just got done playing this before heading off to work, it was all I remembered, all I thought it would be, they did as good with it as they could've, IMHO.  Very good translation of a classic, I'll be playing it a lot.

Good point khan.

I forgot about that feature, I do remember now that a review for Tron was in the Official Xbox mag from I believe last June, when I thought Tron would be released sometime last summer. Was worth the wait however.

Thanks again for the tip, I will try that feature right now.

I was looking forward to the light cycle game (didn't really care one way or the other for the other sections), but my recollection of that is not from this ancient arcade version, but one or two really nifty 3D versions for the PC back in the late 90s if I recall correctly.
I may have grown up with Commodore 64 games in the 80s, but this nevertheless still feels a bit too old school for me here in 2008 :).

Most assuredly worth the 400 points to travel back to the yesteryear days of the Arcade. I've stated in another post that it took me a game to get used to the controls but I've already had a blast with it.

This game is hard for me to play with the xbox controller. I wish they came out with a "Tempest" controller or a "turning" controller like the one that was on the original arcade game.

Re: Anyone download it yet? If so post a review!
Some highlights:

  • It's a definitely a nice walk down memory lane -- Nostalgia Factor is A+
  • Echoing what others have said the controls are indeed clunky without the turn knob (and for some reason it is difficult to maintain straight lines with the light cycles); however, I think this is something you can get used to and compensate for
  • Ironically the classic graphics (default setting) actually look better than 'enhanced' -- there is a HD background but the playfield is a small box in the center like what you remember from the Arcade cabinet.  The enhanced touches that they added don't look as good to me as the classic effects (i.e. rainbow cones, etc.)
  • Multiplayer looks like it can be fun -- especially Co-op.  You see your screen on a larger viewable box and your partner on a smaller box in the lower-right hand corner.  There is classic Vs. mode as well as "Pressure Cooker" vs. -- in the latter mode if you are leading your opponent in score then everything goes faster on his game making things harder
The few multiplayer games I played on XBL were LAGGY and SLOW AS ***.  I connected with someone who had 2 of the 3 bars and my 'net connection is rock solid so I'm guessing the net code isn't all that great -- usually the case with the arcade classics from what I have seen.

The aiming in multiplayer is messed up, the guy's arm and the tank turret just keep going around in circles.

This happens without you even touching the right-analog stick?

That's odd -- I haven't seen that (yet) if so...

No it happens while I'm aiming, like if I aim and shoot up towards the cone or spiders the guy's arm just keeps going around like I'm rotating the joystick.

Re: Anyone download it yet? If so post a review!
This is a HUGE disappointment. Here's my two cents:
  • The hype released last year stated there would be other "updated" versions of the game as well as the arcade classic. Well, there is only the classic, and the port stinks.
  • The sound is WAY glitchy. In only 5 minutes of play, I noticed at least a dozen really bad sound glitches.
  • The controls are slow and sloppy.
    • The old game, which I did get a chance to play recently, so I'm not just remembering something from over 20 years ago, had an extremely smooth and fast trigger. It makes a difference when entering the MCP Cone or battling tanks.
    • I mistakenly thought the dual sticks on the 360 controller would make an excellent choice for the joystick/spinner combo on the original game. The left stick is very twitchy, and the the spinner is dog slow. The arcade spinner was so fast that it took some getting used to. The right stick as the spinner moves so slowly that I see little way anyone will be able to get that real feel back.
OK, granted, it was only 400 points, so it's not like I spent a lot on this game. Still, for a simple port that was delayed by nearly a year, I have to wonder what the game studio was thinking. TRON may not be the biggest hit of all times and may not get the backing of other larger hits, but I think this representation is weak at best. I've played better MAME ports on PCs with the controls mapped to the keyboard. I'd give this a 2 out of 5.

It's supposed to do that.  ;)

The original arcade game had a turn-knob aka rotary dial (like Tempest) that you used in order to control the direction of fire on the arm and Tank Gun.

It isn't point and shoot with the right-analog like Mutant Storm or Geometry Wars...

This is fair criticism -- it's too bad they didn't do a better job -- completely agree with you on the spinner being dog slow.  Could really cripple things at the higher difficulty levels.

Just great that this is on arcade... i always had no lower than 90k on the arcade as a kid, and signed my name FLM.  Wondering if the MadCatz controller would be better... does anyone have one?

The arm spinning is slow for sure... and as someone said it might be a problem in faster stages... also the tanks took a few goes to get used to... but i've forgotten all the moves and positions i used to go in to get through the tanks!!! it'll come back to me i'm sure.

Had a retro afternoon... got my copy of Dragons Lair (DVD) and played it on the 360... loved it... whats going to be the next big arcade creation... not many good ones left.

LoL
Just wondering if you are too young to remember it in the arcades... thats the magic of tron for me... 10p in the slot and could play for an hour... it's one of the best XBLA games for me... although... it would be nice if it had a continue option (or more lives than 5)... going back to start is always a bummer.

Yeah I remember how it was with the dial but it doesn't do it in single player only multi. You're supposed to be able to aim not just rotate the gun around nonstop.

Hey Guys -- just noticed that you can change the controls so that the right-analog acts more like Geometry Wars (aim and shoot) -- and it is super fast (no more dog slow here).

Check it out!!

FYI. Played games no longer display if someone has played the trial version of an Xbox Live Arcade game. Only those who have purchased the game will now show the game on their played games list. This is something the community itself asked for.

Will need to try this game for myself later today to see what it is like.

I'm not finding this option. There are 4 control schemes from what I can tell, the first 2 switching aim and move between the left or right analog, then the other 2 are the same but it says absolute aim, whatever that means. I can't tell any difference between regular aim and this absolute aim. In any case neither one allows shooting in the dirction you aim by only usning the analog stick. I still have to press RT to fire. What am I missing?
