Optional Bosses & how to make them cry

Here's how I did all the optional bosses for anyone having problems. Anyone else who's already smacked them down please post your tactics/tips etc.

Sacred Beast - Numara Atoll

Once you get Ming and her harp to Numara Atoll you can summon this beasty for a battle. This is an optional boss that you don't actually kill, you just have to knock it back into its senses.

The first thing to know about this guy is that he has a doom spell which is unavoidable and can wipe out your entire party in one hit. It's very easy to spot it coming. What he does is cast a sleep spell on your entire party when his health drops below half. Once he does that you have 4 turns to finish him off or he breaks out the unblockable doom spell and your game is over. So obviously any items that prevent sleep would be very helpful. In addition to the anti-sleep item you will probably want to get anti-element stuff equipped also, as he breaks out all sorts out of element-based attacks. You can get an immunity to all elements item from the Kelolon village which is pretty helpful. Other than that, he's not such a tough guy. Physical attacks and element/curse spells will do a lot of damage to him.

Once you beat the Sacred Beast you get an item which gives your immortals +10 slots.

King Kelolon - Kelolon Village

This boss is the other one you don't actually kill, and the only thing that might bother some people is he is constantly aided during the battle, giving him healing and damage absorbing spells in addition to his own attacks. He isn't particularly tough to beat, but if you can't keep up a good rate of damage on him the helpers will heal him faster than you can knock him down. He also has the Divide spell (which you will learn upon beating him) that can do decent damage. Other than that he is a piece of cake.

Blue Dragon - Northern Snowfields

The Blue Dragon has the ability to absorb any element-based magical attack, so be careful you don't heal him during the battle. He also comes at you with a few high power black and curse magic spells. Equipping an anti-curse item and use of barriers is recommended for lower level players. Physical attacks with magical support worked best for me, and this boss shouldn't give you too many hassles as long as you don't let him use "Death" on your whole party.

The Yellow Knight - Uhra Castle

Simple. Just follow the instructions he gives you. If he wants you to attack, attack, if he wants you to defend, defend. The battle is a mere formality but if you don't do as he says he will kill you.

Cave Worm - Forgotten Cave

Going into the forgotten cave and entering the upper plateau area will trigger this boss fight. The worm isn't all that tough but it has just about every status effect spell in its arsenal so it can paralyze, blind, sleep, freeze, and also poison you, so equip your anti-effect items. After that it shouldn't present much of a problem.

The Legendary Curse Sorceror - Temple of Enlightenment

Mack has to be in this fight so don't neglect to level him up. This guy is a master of curse magic and always attacks twice in a row when his turn comes, so he can do some damage. He also conjures various beasties to protect him which you will have to defeat before you can take him down. The first protector he summons can be defeated with physical attacks and wind spells which seem to work well on all these critters. Once that is dead he will summon a pair of guardians which are very susceptible to "Death" so if you have it, use it! You can knock these 2 clowns out before they even know what hit them. Once they are down you get the main man himself, and he is also very weak against wind spells and physical punishment. Items which increase defence and anti-status effects will help a lot against this boss.

Persona - Old Sorceress' Mansion

If you go back to the room where you fought the mansion boss you will encounter Persona. This boss isn't especially tough but there are a few things to be aware of. First of all he uses mainly black and curse magic, watch out for "Death". Second he can become immune to either magic or physical attacks by turning his head. He can also do this quite quickly meaning you can order say Ming to cast a spell while he is showing his physical face but by the time she has it ready to fire he has already turned his head around, making your attack useless. I found the easiest way to beat this guy was to just throw bombs at him. If you don't like the idea of playing chance with his head-turning patterns you can always resort to bombs, as he cannot block these attacks. Just keep lobbing them at him and he will die pretty quickly. If you want to spice it up with some physical or magical attacks in-between, go for it, just keep an eye on the head rotations.

If tactics just aren't working and you are the type of guy that has problems ordering at McDonald's, you can of course just level grind until you can swat these guys like flies, but once you're finished with them, The Immortal is waiting for you in the Backyard Stick out tongue [:P] He is the ultimate answer to the problem of level-grinding brutes, and if you don't use tactics there you will be dead in a matter of rounds.

I like how everyone always makes a point of "you have to use Mack, so make sure you level him up."  Characters are required for other fights too, like Sarah and Kaim for Persona, Cooke for King Kelolon, etc., but no one ever mentions them.

I guess Mack is just universally disliked and underleveled.

I think it's true that Mack does get overlooked quite a lot. He's easily the most unpopular character in the game. Which makes sense, since he's a bit of a pansy. Everyone just uses him to learn his curse magic and then he is discarded like an unloved wank rag. Stick out tongue [:P]

I guess the alternative is to just leave him low rank and do the battles without him, he certainly isn't necessary anyway. Then just pick up his corpse on the way out.

The spells that I cast on the Blue Dragon were actually absorbed and gave him HPs back.  I did the entire battle using only physical attacks.  Fortunately, 4 of my party members were immortals.  It was like musical chairs with them "dying" and then coming back to life during that battle.  It was so close.  Anyway, thanks for the write up.  I still have a few of these to take on still.

icarus, same here, that's what I meant. I was using physical attacks with the mages on defence or stat boosting Kaim and Seth in the front row.

I posted this in another thread but here it is again:

There's really only 3 basic types that might give you trouble. Killing these guys comes in handy because they give you huge amounts of SP for each one, allowing you to learn skills a lot quicker.

Silver: For silver Kelolons don't even bother with standard attacks. I found what worked best was to use Kaim and Seth to speed up Ming and Sarah's casting time, and then have Ming and Sarah both double cast the curse "Gamble" on them. If the Kelolon's are getting the chance to run away just have them (Ming and Sarah) cast it once each to try to speed them up.

Platinum: These guys are immune to all physical and magical attacks, but a few Earth bombs from your inventory will sort him out. Simple as that, just throw bombs at him.

Black & H3ll: H3ll Kelolons are basically just a slightly tougher version of the Black Kelolon, and both are killable with physical and magical attacks, but they both have a susceptibility to fire, so flame them. These guys can inflict some pretty big damage to lower level parties so you will want to kill them before they can get too many hits in. Aside from SP, these guys also give you a heap of EXP.

From memory all the other Kelolon types are pretty easy to kill. And remember, when in doubt, "GAMBLE". There are very few critters that can get away from Gamble, but like the name of the spell says, it's all a bit of luck. Sometimes you do really lame damage like 200 or 300, but I found most of the time I was doing thousands per hit.

Oh, and to find these guys you need to go to Numara Atoll for the Silvers, the cave where you fight Money Money or the Crimson Forest for the Platinums, and the Temple of Enlightenment for the Black/H3ll Kelolons. Incidently the Temple of Enlightenment is a great place to level up and learn skills, as the enemies there are loaded with either SP or EXP or both. Happy hunting!

Re: Optional Bosses & how to make them cry

Nice post. I didn't even know where to find half of these guys, so thanks for that. I only defeated Persona and the Holy Beast, but I agree that bombs are ftw, lol.

For the Holy Beast, I pretty much bombed his butt 'til kingdom come. Groundus Bombs pretty much ended him in 2 rounds. If you are having trouble, just buy some of these, lol. For a real strategy, the OP's one sounds pretty nice to me. I just have 300k so 10k won't hurt to waste, haha. You can buy high level ones at the Numara zone to the south of the port, at the path under the bridge.

Once you learn Persona's trick, it's relatively easy. Just stick with "attack" and quick-casting or low level magic depending on the face to get him. Throwing on some anti-petrify and anti-darkness accessories or skills will also help. I would recommend using Relax for Ming or Sarah if you use them, because his Darkness attack(not the effects which your skill blocks) can be pretty draining.

I believe that you need to complete the Ruins of the Eastern Tribe section first, if you haven't. I tried going to the mansion before I did that and I wasn't able to get Persona to spawn. You'll know when she has spawned if there is talk about retrieving an item inside the mansion once you warp to the area.

I wrote where they all are next to their names. Stick out tongue [:P] They can't be fought until disc 4 so don't worry about them until then.

And I just remembered another one.

Money Money - Terrace Cave

You don't get an achievement for this guy but if you don't beat him you can't access the final areas of the Backyard. He is also a little tricky to run into so here's how to do it:

1. Go to the Great Ancient Ruin (the place with all the moving platforms) and in the main square you should get attacked by a critter called "Money", usually in pairs.

2. Don't kill them immediately!!! Wait until they steal money from you, then slaughter them.

3. If you go to the Terrace Cave after this has happened you will find a trail of coins on the cave floor. Pick up all the coins and follow the trail, you will also find 2 chests along the way.

4. When you reach the second and last chest Money Money will appear when you open it. Money Money and Money are both weak against fire attacks so use that to do extra damage, other than that he is a pretty weak boss anyway and shouldn't present any real threat.

5. Take the item he drops to the guy in the Backyard and the Super Heavy class should unlock. Beat Super Heavy and you can take on The Immortal.

You can free roam on disc 4 so revisit all the old sites then. If you do all the optional stuff in the game then it's very possible that disc 4 alone will take you more time to complete than the previous 3 discs combined Stick out tongue [:P]

Yes, any attack made on him has a high probability of being answered with either Shadowus or Curse. When you take down his health more he eventually starts breaking out Cube which makes the battle very intense. Cube knocks every characters health down to 1 or thereabouts.

I was just over level 70 when I fought and beat The Immortal so if you are level 80 you are more than high enough. There's just a few easy tricks to beat him.

1. Equip as much defensive stuff as you have in your inventory and skill slots. Tolten's block skill is very useful as it negates anything for a few turns. Also equip that skill that lets you block in a pinch, and any anti-status effects items.

2. He sneezes on you usually on his first attack which destroys your wall so either equip skills that rebuild your wall while defending or have Mack or someone using Wall building skills, you might not need to do this anyway.

3. You have a curse spell which inflicts any damage done to the caster back upon the attacker, so use that well and you can have this guy helping to kill himself. This comes in very handy later on in the battle when he starts using all his defensive magic. The white magic "Divide" also works well on him before he does this, but be prepared because he can cast it too.

4. Equip anti-floater rings on Kaim and Seth and anyone else you plan on having do physical attacks. The immortal is weak against anti-float. Also get any stat booster spells cast as soon as possible, like Powerus so that Kaim and Seth do as much damage as they can. You can also use some barrier or shield magic but the beasty will probably just dispel it.

5. Equip Tolten's Ultimate Hit on Seth and Kaim. It takes a while for them to prepare it but if you use the back rowers to keep them healed and speeding up their magic it is VERY effective. Instead of 3 or 4 tiny hits with Shadowus retaliations you can land 1 big hit every second round or so, he will still be able to Shadowus you but once is better than 3 times.

6. Equip "double item" and "double magic" skills on everyone so you can throw out lots of spells and healing items every turn. Load up on healing items before the battle, it's a waste of spells during the battle, and faster anyway. The best ones can be bought from the Kelolon Village.

That's about it really. Just keep your tanks up front alive and attacking, with the mages either casting support on them or using items, or reflecting the big guys damage back onto him. He will go down eventually. And if you want the achievement, you have to kill him within 30 turns. Good luck.

Re: Optional Bosses & how to make them cry
I beat The Immortal at around level 62 I think.  I equipped every defensive skill I could find that would negate or absorb damage, gave everyone Double-Cast, level 8 black/white and spirit magic, and the spell speed enhancements.  With HP enhancements, Kaim and Seth had around 8k HP, and so they did most of my damage through double Divide (for the first part) or Reversa (once he started using Cube) each turn.  That was around 32k damage every turn or two.

The other characters just concentrated on keeping people alive - double casting Revive or even Ressurect when you have Auto MP on barely makes a dent in MP, and with speed enhancing skills you can have it execute the same turn you issue the command.
