WAW beta - your reviews?
I've been playing for two days now so here goes.

When you first play, it seems very strange.  The initial fear of not knowing the maps returns and basically makes you feel fear and anticipation.  The maps are a bit bigger than COD4, look beautiful, are well designed and feel somewhat errie.  there's a lot of atmosphere to this game.  In the beta, there are no maps with long open streets/areas like in COD4, therefore camping and sniping is less of an issue.  you just have to get into each other.

There is a fabulous variety of guns and perks.  Initially, I thought it took a lot of bullets to kill anyone.  However, I was the only non-American in any of the games I played so I think I was lagging.  I hard wired my xbox to the modem and problem solved.  In saying that, it is more difficult to get kills than COD4.  This isnt so much of a 'pick up and kill' game.  It'll require a bit more skill and thinking.  This'll probably put a lot of the kids off who just want to rack up big easy kill streaks so happy days.

The artillary strikes and dogs last a loooong time.  the dogs are freakin psychos like the dog from the Omen lol.  It's a very cool touch indeed.

Anyone saying treyarck sucks after playing this game needs their head examined.  This is a fabulous game and all respect and thanks to Treyarch.  they really pulled it off.  A lot of people are calling this COD 4.5, I think this couldnt be further from the truth.  Apart from the familiar nametags, grenade icons etc, the game is very unique.  In fact, it doesnt feel like COD4 at all.  It feels like a hybrid of the best aspects of COD 2, 3 and 4 with a lot of it's own flavour added on top.  If treyarch wanted to redefine the WW2 gaming arena then they surely have passed with flying colours.

It does take a while to get used to but it' a fabulous game.  I anticipate another game of the year title for the Call of Duty series.

I think a lot of beta tokens are going out now so enjoy it everyone.

I'm at 8% downloading mine now, just got my code about 10 minutes ago!  Can't wait, MUCHO RESPECT to Treyarch, this game looks amazing from everything I've seen so far.  When I first heard that Treyarch was making CoD5, and in WW2 again I was a sad, sad panda.  But in the last month or so my views have been drastically changed!

Just be prepared to be shocked.  You'll feel like a lone soldier ina strange place.  It feels quite real.

Once you get used to it a bit, you'll recognise it as being a beautiful creation.  I dont get the COD4 v WAW debate.  It's apparent that they are VERY different games.  There'll be room for both games in the lives of true COD fans.

Poeple may miss aspects of the Modern era but there's no doubting that, technically, this is a much superior game to COD4.

have a ball.

Oh, no doubt!  I didn't mean that I didn't like the WW2 era games, I LOVED the original CoD.  I was just disappointed in Treyarch's outing with CoD3.  So initially I was very skeptic (before there was gameplay footage etc.) but I am super hyped now, looks FANTASTIC from everything I've seen, will definitely be getting this game.  Download at 16% now!!!  LOL see you guys soon.

I think a lot of people felt the same about COD3.  Anyone who still abuses treyarch after playing this game is just lying or else they are just too pig headed to admit they were wrong.  This is an outstanding game.  Different to, but at least the equal of COD4.

Catch up with you soon U2 Boy :):):)

By far the worst spawn system in any game i've ever played to date.. Some of the replays are absolutely chocking to watch, they might as well save everyone time and just award the other player a kill without it spawning me. Other than that, good game.

Re: WAW beta - your reviews?

Call of Duty:WW is a great game.

The weapons are very balanced, each weapon has it's power and weakness. The sniper is easy to use and the bolt-action rifles are good for long-range only. The variety of grenades are pretty good, they have added a Flare, which is where you can light up a whole section of a night-time map and give the location away of the enemy. The frags seem to have a less damage radius and the molotov cocktails are deadly.

The vehicles seem pretty useless to me, there is only one map in the Beta you can use a vehicle (tank). It's hard to control and when you're in it, you practically have a target on your head the whole time. You can always see where the tank is on your radar, so when you're in the tank, it's hard to find someone, because everyone hides (unless they have an Rockets). The tanks are fun, but if your want fast kills without driving around for five minutes, I wouldn't recommend getting into one.

The kill streaks are good too, here's a breakdown of them

  • 3 Kill Streak - Plane Radar - Same as CoD4
  • 5 Kill Streak - Artillery Strike - These are much different, they have the same radius as CoD4, but they are three times longer and louder.
  • 7 Kill Streak - Dogs - This is so much fun, the first time I had this, I got an extra 12 kills, these dogs do the job. The dogs come out of the side of the map an attack the enemy only. There are two ways to kill a dog; shoot and knife. The dogs kill you the same way as CoD4, except all they have to do is hit you once and your dead.

The maps are very detailed and think they're great.

Makin: My favorite map, I usually get 200-300 points on this map every game. It's the small map in the beta and it has different variation all through the map; one half is maze-like and the other half is open with many buildings to protect you from a surprising air-strike. It's a night-time map, which really does affect seeing someone instantly, the players really blend in with the environment.

Castle: This is a also a great map. It's the medium sized map in the beta. It's mostly like a "protect the high ground" map with many open areas and trenches. There are about three entrances to every building, so if you're planning to get countless sniper sprees on one spot, I wouldn't count on it.

Roundhouse: This is a great map for snipers and bolt-action guns. It's the large map in the beta. It has many high sniper spots and this is the map with the two tanks.

Capture the Flag and War are the two new gametypes that were not in CoD4. War is a great gametype that can last pretty long and it' my favorite gametype in the beta. CTF is standard CTF, there is a flag at each base, and you must grab the flag and bring it to your base. Team Deathmatch, Free-for-all and Mercenary Team Deathmatch also made a return in the beta.

The spawn points are annoying, sometimes, it will bring you in the middle of the fight and by time you know where you are, you're dead.

The perks and barracks are much like CoD4, but with some differences. It has new and different perks, one for example is where you can revive your teammate if he is in Last Stand mode and many others.

If you've enjoyed CoD3 then you'll enjoy WW. CoD4 features are there but the mechanics and all are straight out of CoD3. Overall it's not bad but not great either, but with videogame overload within the next couple of weeks this'll just be a rental for me.

Re: WAW beta - your reviews?
W@W is good thus far. It's just no CoD4. You know, I really didn't appreciate just how well the characters are animated in CoD4. The "weight" in the movement was perfect. This game... unfortunately not as good with the animations, and the movements feel a little more "floaty" as a result.

Overall, it's fun. I love being able to use bolt-action without a scope, even if they can be frustrating at times. On a scale of 1 to 10, with a CoD cell-phone game being a 1 and CoD4 being a 10, I give it about a 7.

Actual valid concerns about weapon strength (read: not just complaining for the sake of complaining)

Non-scoped bolt-actions: too weak/fickle. Sometimes kill in one-hit, but unfortunately in most cases do not. Stopping Power helps somewhat, but you shouldn't be forced to pick a certain perk just to get a weapon to work correctly.

Thompson: too strong. High rate of fire encourages spray-n-pray, especially with drum magazine. Low recoil makes it beastly even at medium and long ranges. MP40 is far more balanced.

Dogs: too many of them spawn. First time I called them I got six kills off of them. WTF? Choppers in CoD4 choppers rarely got that many kills, unless you were playing with newbies. The biggest problem is that they're distracting as well (which I suppose is part of the charm, but still). The swarm of dogs makes enemies easy pray as they flail around trying to kill them. Kinda not cool, as it gives them yet another advantage that choppers did not have.

Telescopic site: Really? Really, Treyarch? You took the worst attachment in CoD4 and brought it back? Originality is knocking. You may want to answer the door.

Give me dogs over silly as Heli-bird anyday, least this one is fair and doesnt have the hand of god killing you even though they can;t see yah like COD4.  i love the guns and i will enjoy using the bolt action more when hardcore is released. Tank play is pretty fun as well and everything just has a nice speed, really dig the MP40 wanting more maps and weapons and wish the game came out yesterday so i can see what the c0-0p will be like. I think its at least a 8.5-9 IMO.

Vs: WAW beta - your reviews?

Just my opinion, but the game (beta) feels cod4 copycat, overdone, it's a WW2. Like those signal flares are supposed to be flashbangs, and poison nades stuns. First time i picked up a Thompson with that silly sight i just started laughing when i took aim and saw that stupid thing on it. Small maps so full of stuff they feel like labyrints. Campers galore when these awfull people get the game on their greasy fat fingers, just imagine that dark map in hardcore. All these perks and silly attachments just to kiss some cod4 fanboy ***. Hit detection BLOWS. Instead of fixing the horrible hit detecion they threw in all this unnecessary crap. Garbage hit detection = Garbage shooter.

Martyrdom will be there.

Re: WAW beta - your reviews?
I have to agree with an earlier poster, it is basically a reskinned version of CoD4, with all the faults of CoD4 as well. It looks like absolutely no development was made on the networking side of the game. It still has:

No Host Migration
Lousy Hit Detection
Poor Matchmaking (even when using the Local option)

With regards to matchmaking, I'm sorry but a ping test is only valid for determining two things. 1) That a machine is available, and 2) measuring a round-trip time...i.e. giving an idea of your location to host. It says absolutely nothing about how a host will perform when handling actual game traffic. I saw quite a few times last night that hosts were picked that could not support this traffic, causing major lag during things like airstrikes, etc.

This failure in matchmaking also impacts on the hit detection, which from all available evidence is still server side. Which would be fine, if the servers were actually capable.

Finally, these failures in networking, are, imho, the reason why juggernaut is so annoying, even when using stopping power. What you have basically implemented/copied is a lag multiplier.

One thing that could improve the situation is to do a bandwidth test for each user. Either a one-off measurement or every time they make a connection to the matchmaking servers (When they select Xbox Live from the menu), and using this as a metric in combination with ping, do determine a suitable host.

Ideally, you should have stuck with the P2P model you had in CoD3, and developed it further, and do away with the single host problem altogether.

It would be an understatement to say I'm disappointed.

True, it does feel almost like a reskinned version of CoD4 (badly designed skins that is) i never got my hopes up for this game, and im glad i didn't. It seems like they got lazy and didn't put the effort in where in was needed and that is in the coding side where all these 10's of thousands of people will be connecting throught *sigh*
