Update 12/8/2009: Figured I should go ahead and update this thread here since it is pinned and some may not be aware. From support article 911314, How to update backward compatibility on your Xbox 360 console.
The backward compatibility games list is no longer updated. Therefore, the list on the Xbox.com Web site represents the final set of backward-compatible games. The original Xbox game support feature requires that an Xbox Hard Disc Drive (HDD) accessory be added to your Xbox 360 console.

Below are the contents of the previous pinned thread from Bloody Baroness. If you have any questions regarding backwards compatibility on the Xbox 360 console or the Xbox Originals program, please see the details she has provided below.
Xbox Originals and Backwards Compatible games are totally different.
Originals - Are a new service provided by Microsoft by means of the Marketplace. You can buy a few Xbox original games that are coming available through the Marketplace by exchanging Microsoft points for them. These games are then downloaded and saved to your hard drive; no disc is needed to play them. More information on this service can be found HERE.
Backwards Compatible – Are Xbox original games that you bought in disc format. These games are limited to a list that has been posted on the website. A FAQ’s regarding the Backwards Compatible can be found HERE, while a list of current BC games can be found HERE.
I've made this information into a sticky as i've seen a few posts that were asking about the differance, or thinking one was the other.
Hope you all find this information useful. Please pass it on.
