Turn on your brain - Natal original game ideas
I've seen plenty of posts here & around the web from people who think that Natal will be too limited and only useful for a few game types.  If you limit your thinking to only existing game types, that may be true to a degree, but why limit your thinking?

Put on your creativity caps, people.  Let's hear some truly original ideas for the types of games you'd like to see using the Natal system.

I'll start.  How about a console version of 'Hole In The Wall'?  (AKA  Human Tetris from Japan).

Let's hear what you've got!  Smile [:)]

i would love to see a re-vised version of DragonsLair, think of it full body motion capture within a 3d environment DragonsLair was way ahead of its time and i think this is the device to truly make that game shine.

Not exactly original.  I think we all know by now that you believe this is all Natal will be good for.  Here, I'm challenging people to think outside the mold & come up with ORIGINAL ideas for games that might be good for Natal.

LOL  Yep.  That'd work.

The minute the vision video was over, my wife immediately thought of a personal trainer type game/program, where you'd have a personal trainer on-screen, who would be able to 'watch' you do the moves and let you know if you're getting it right (For Pilates, Yoga, etc.).

They tried it on Xbox with "Yourself Fitness", but I think the ability of Natal to provide you with a virtual personaly trainer who can keep you on track would be great.  Yes [Y]

This may be a bit far fetched, but how about a game resembling a reverse Shadow of the Colossus? (i.e. There's a dude climbing around your body [which is superimposed on the screen as some sort of creature] trying to take you down somehow)  Just a thought; I'd like to play that.

I'd love to see a medieval game sort of gladiator style where you fight against 4 headed dragons, giants, skeleton knights etc, the way i visualize something like this working is you wouldnt be able to turn your surroundings/view (3rd person perspective) but you would be able to step out of the way (dodging) blows from the monster/knight etc which would turn your view to face the enemy your fighting. this way you would still be able to get to the side of the enemy without over complicating the controls.

I think a game like this could be really fun as well as really hard..

That's one way to think of it; you as Gulliver versus a Liliputian.  I'm not sure if you've ever played Shadow of the Colossus, but if you haven't then I suggest watching some YouTube vids and you'll see what I'm talking about.

Re: Turn on your brain - Natal original game ideas

Everyones saying shooting games arent going to be possible with natal but i dont see why not..

How about 3rd person shooting/action games? these could be extremely fun atleast in my mind. Everything you do your character does on screen (crouch, roll, shoot) You could move by simply walking and when you aimed at the tv a reticle would pop or sighting for your gun this is the same as any controler except to shoot your going to aim and shake you hand or twiddle your thumb (someone out there can create a creative fun way) and to turn your view 360 degrees you simply move your reticle towards the edge of your tv and your character begins to turn (this needs to be precise so you can make quick movements but not too sensitive) Imagine you can use your voice to speak to in-game a.i teammates by giving them orders or during cutscenes where your giving a selection of choices to read out, even use voice to switch weapons or other unique actions that arent as easy by using body language. With this technology theres unlimited possibiles but developers have to be intrested enough to test these ideas and balance them out enough to where there not too much work for the player but still interactive and responsive enough to be fun!

I think including 3d gaming with natal would really make it an insane package but maybe thats not possible at the time or in our cost range but id pay $1000 for motion body control, voice recongition, and 3d gaming all in one.

Re: Turn on your brain - Natal original game ideas
I think that one of the best setups that could both show off the versatility/variety to be found with Natal without getting too complicated is a Mario Party-like title.

Players could use their avatars and play on boards designed around hit titles (for example, a Fallout 3 board that contains nuclear waste pools and numerous monuments).

When "rolling the dice" players can move their hand as if throwing them, just like with a real board game.

When it comes time for mini-games, there could be a huge variety of options, including:

-A fishing game where players "cast off" and "reel in" to try and catch the most fish
-A ghost hunt game where players "aim" their flashlights to scare away the ghosts
-A kart-racing game where players "steer" around the obstacles
-A wild-west game where players have to "swing" a lasso around and then "throw" it at the right moment
-A jumprope game where players must "jump" the most to win
-A dance/mimic game where players have to "mimic" the moves that the computer does
-One of those "shift-puzzle" games where players have the "rearrange" the squares to make an image
-A drum game where players have to "play" to a certain beat
-A hula-hoop game where players have to "spin" it the longest
-A swimming medley where players have to "stroke" to the finish

This would be an excellent showcase for what Natal can process while still keeping things simple and easy for all players and providing neat multiplayer support.

The only thing that I think Natal needs in order to get truly "hardcore" games like FPS down is a simply joystick/analog stick controller that you can hold in one hand and move with your thumb.

This would control character movement while leaving Natal free for everything else and not restraining the player to user both Natal and a regular controller.

Think of it sort of like a lighter, only with an analog stick on top.

i know what ya mean, but i think the whole idea that microsoft was trying to sell was that you dont need another controller, minus the natal camera setup.

for me i have a couple of ideas, but i dont think they will be possible since im not sure on how much the natal can see/interact with (ex: finger squeeze, for firing a gun, etc.)

oh well here they go.

arcade rail-shooter:
  • you only use you hands, and set them up like your holding a shotgun.
  • on screen shows a circle (this is your reticule)
  • shoot by lifting you hands in the upward motion (example: like the upward motion from the kickback of firing a gun)
  • reload buy moving you hand backwards, like so on a pump shotgun.
  • move the reticule by moving you arms in the direction you want to move too (this movement would be best described as like on the wii menu, you move the finger, by slight movement or the remote. this sensitivity could be adjusted in the options menu)

Paintball:
  • 1st person game
  • reload by doing the motion of reloading the gun by; popping the cap off, and picking the paintball pack, and pouring it in, and closing the lid.
  • fire the gun by squeezing you finger
  • move your person, by tilting you body above you waist. (example: some what like dodging punches, in boxing, but not soo much degree movement)
  • run by pointing you gun down (like moving it off screen)
  • aim, by moving you arms, in the direction you intend.
  • cycle through prone, croutching, and standing, by moving a foot foward, and tapping, and returning it to normal.
  • if you get hit, swipe you hand, in front of you face, to try and clean it off, but you may get caught, and get called out.
  • since the is 1st person, you may get paint splatter on you glasses, and to clean it, rub it off. (like you rubbing you eye).

idk, how are those ideas look like, just thinking, and being very tierd gave me those ideas.

Dead Rising 2 with Natal would ROCK!

Also card games can be used with it too, board games can totally be used too, same with RPG's I guess, FPS games,  Racing games will be huge because they can easly use NATAL and they wont have to buy a $150 wheel lol

I think [insert new game release here] is the best game ever!

A free roam game...seeing as how you can pretty much do any action with the Natal why not make a game like Prototype, Fallout 3, GTA, or even Oblivion. I'm not saying its the best idea but the hand to hand combat in these games would be fun to test out on this. Also the guns could also be done by the pulling of the finger kinda like what the person above me said with the paintball game idea.

Re: Turn on your brain - Natal original game ideas
I have posted one game idea for Natal in another thread. It was inspired by Mr Peter Molyneux's demo in E3.

I will try one less 'evil' game here Smile [:)]

========================
Out of body experience (OOBE)
========================
Since Natal can detect depth, it might be able to create a 3D version of you. It might need some help from MS photosynth technology, nevertheless it can be done. (even the bottom of your feet can be mapped to the virtual you)
To get the proportion right, they might need to reference to something, anyway that is not an issue.

Imagine what you can do with a virtual you.
a) You can roam a 3D location which is as real as the real world. Instead of processing polygon, processor power is used to stitch real photo and predict the outcome if angle changes, height changes etc.

Example you can visit a Egypt Pyramid and have your picture taken outside/inside of the pyramid. (maybe an invisible watermark can be included to help forensic)

Although this is an out of body experience (OOBE), it can be a good pre-visit research software. You can also set marking and have it 'ported' to your winMo phone.

You can mark a RV point for meeting up with another person, even though both of you have never been there. You can set 'rally point' for him or her to follow if needed, direct them all the way from the entrance. And the other person does not need to have a xbox, they just need a PC + Internet connection.

b) Take pictures with another virtual person/celebrity

c) play a horror survivor game like Alan Wake using your virtual self.

This technology can be used by 'evil' but everything can be used for 'evil', so no worry. 'Good' guys/gals will prevail if there are any 'Good' guys/gals left in this world. lol

////I bing on 'Hole in the wall' suggested by OP. To my surprise the 1st result is pointed to a guided canoe adventure tour company Smile [:)]

i like that idea of scanning an object.

how about a game cod type game, where you use the controllers, but you can scan images in using the natal to replace the gun, grenades, clothing, so basically you have total customization, like instead of an MP5 skin or something you use a super soaker skin, and they way that you would do this is submit pictures of an object, over live for review (to control the bad images) and then that image would then be placed online, and everyone could access it and use the skin, and this could work for more than just guns, maybe grenades, use a water balloon, baseball, pop can, xbox 360 controller, etc...

What if there was a game that was A first person perspective game that opens with you walking up to a podium taking questions from an audience/press corp/inquisition. You have no idea who or what you are at this point. The first question from the audience/panel is what is your name so you speak it and Natal can then use your name. Then they start asking you all sorts of questions that you have no idea the answers or basically what is going on. Maybe Natal recognizes your facial reactions and then responses if you seem confused, frustrated, etc. Your character(you) has lost it's memory and from there you use dialog with Natal to discover who you are as the game plays out. The actual game scenario is irrelevant here, but this is just one example of game play that could be applied to many different genres. Would be pretty interesting to see right.

Re: Turn on your brain - Natal original game ideas
Adventure/Puzzle game.  Sort of a mix between a lot of various games and genres... think Tomb Raider meets Myst meets Portal.  More action oriented than the last 2 but still 'simple' and manageable enough to control using more basic physical movements or even verbal commands (think dialogue options... instead of pointing to what you want, say it or use a 'short' such as first, second, etc).  Depending on exactly what the technology will be capable of though depends on how it would play.

But the more believable the world the better--doesn't have to be 'realistic' so much as atmospherically/environmentally feasible not to break immersion any more than necessary as being 'part of the game' would be a huge selling point for Natal imo.  Part of why I think Action Adventure/Puzzle would be a great genre blend for the tech is that it could allow for some of the most visually stunning and pleasing gameplay.  Imagine yourself exploring mountains/jungles/ruins/cities/etc from either first or third person perspective where NPCs, animals, and even parts of the environment can interact with you physically/visually (your 'avatar'/character) or even audially (voice of course... if you make too much sound could scare or attract attention... or like I said, dialogue with characters).  Climb mountains/cliffs/bridges and have epic vistas showing both where you have been and where you are headed--not just the character but 'you' as you have to physically take part in some form or another.  Biggest problem would be basic progression from point A to B as 'walking' would become tiring (but this is probably one of biggest hurdles in any game for the technology).  Could be on rails like but would take away from the experience imo since adventures need the travelling.

Action-wise, to be honest I said Tomb Raider but mostly a certain, to stay unnamed, PS3 exclusive more fits the bill.  Cover-based shooting but can still get up close to take someone down if necessary.  Part of why I think cover is it would keep things simpler for the tech--once you progress to cover it has less to track and is probably more precise.  Also its just easier to deal with and wouldn't alienate as many gamers that aren't as interested in full motion controls (this wouldn't be your typical 'casual' game that Natal is basically expecting to target).

Puzzles though, that's where the tech could really shine.  Think MILO 'tech' at its best... direction manipulation of various physics-based puzzles, perhaps converse with NPCs for clues and directions.  Emotional storytelling and responses varying on earlier choices as well as your response at that moment.  Natal to me, if meant to stay, needs something besides gimmicky mini-games and I think that key is interactivity (be it with a person, a digital character, or even the setting).

Other good options besides Adventure/Puzzle genre... social games, not just 'wiisports junk' but think Avatar-based Sims (its top selling pc games outside of WoW for a reason... even when ppl want to get away from RL they want to interact with other ppl.  Strategy games.  More 'casual' games motion controls are already famous for, but go outside of sports games and look at old tv shows/board games for good examples (win, lose or draw... one of my favorites to watch as a kid.  They already showed paint tech so it would be easy enough--even made shadow puppets in same demo which they could throw in as example 'do it yourself' game ideas.

Basically depending on the tech the ideas are near limitless but what I'd really want to see is Interactivity being a key point they strive for.  MILO, even if rumored 'fake' by several sites or at least limited in present form, could make a huge impact on interactive storytelling and I'm more interested in seeing where that can grow into than 'games' that will likely be released.

If you've actually read this whole thing and not just this last line... hopefully it didn't sound too much like me rambling but if it did... who cares.

Re: Turn on your brain - Natal original game ideas
Just off the top of my head.. 1. Charades, local and multiplayer. 2. Fencing, lightsabers, etc. 3.Boxing. The more times your character is hit the more lag is increased to reflect fatigue. 4.Put your exercise bike. rowing machine, or treadmill in front of screen. The faster your feet pedal or run, or row the video speeds up. Or your a bike messenger and you have to lean left or right a little to maneuver through downtown New York to deliver your messages. 5. 3D tabletennis with glasses. 6. Your playing your favorite fps game with normal controller. You want to look ahead. You set controller down and simulate focusing binoculars and you can see what is up ahead. When sniping it can detect your actual body movement and breathing when you are using a normal controller. 7. A left 4 dead\ survival type game. You are given 3 to 5 things that you can scan and then use in the game with or without regular controller. Example: scan a flashlight, if no guns in house scan a drawing or photo.

The best idea I can come up with is Natal Music. The game plays similar to Wii Music except you have no controller. You can pretend to hold drum sticks and start bashing the drums. Natal Music will have a wide variety of instruments including the flute, guitar, piano, violin, harp, and turntables. It will also feature the ability to create and share original music with friends.

I thought the whole point of natal is so we won't need anymore gaming objects....(guitars, steering wheels, drum kits, etc.) so when ur talking about suits... i hope ur talking about like a business suit cause i'd perfer not to have to wear stuff to interact wit a game and the thought of a virtual gf sounds creepy and too many ppl would abuse it by making it look like miley cirus and other stuff that should be illegal if it already isn't....O_O lol my whole view on this and plz clearify on ur "suits"

Well I'm not a fan of Natal but I see potential in terms of RTS games. Take RUSE for instance. Swap the touch screen table (worth about €10,000 btw) with Natal or another type of motion sensor and you've got roughly the same experience minus the gigantic hole in your wallet.
Could also help open up RTS games for consoles that equal RTS on PCs.
