Gamer Tags
This is a bit of a geek question but as someone who tends to blitz the geek tests that float around the net I don't mind. It's also a human interest question which I thinks makes gaming more interesting.

I find gamertags and the choices people make for these intriguing and wonder whether users who have a reason for their gamer tag would share this.

While some are obvious to all, many are not except maybe to family and friends.

My two boys despair of mine, particularly as it's soppy, but the solution for them is to pay  the money and get their own.

It goes way back to when I was a teen dating my wife and we used to meet for lunch in the spacies parlour. As both our lunches varied depending on work demands she would know if I had been in and gone by my name in the high score tables.

Initially games only had the three letters so it was NOL then as you could add more letters (Commando was the first game that arrived in Wanganui that allowed this) it became NOL LUV DI. I've continued using this ever since.

20 years later we are still married so no need to change this.

If you have a story behind your gamer tag (interesting or not) feel free to share this..

Re: Gamer Tags

umm i had a "gamertag" that i always used but got sick of it and "gecko" sounded good, 1 cause i dont have to back it up e.g. if my gamertag was "ultimate sniper" and i couldnt use a sniper to save my life that would be stupid, yet theres alot of this going around lol.

and the "NZP" becasue everyone asks is becasue in the start "gecko" was taken so i used a "NZ" like all us New Zealanders but after the 9 month trial ran out (man that was back in the day when the first live accounts to come to new zealand) and i couldnt renew it so i stuck a "P" on the end.

"Xtramalt" use to be "extramalt" for various PC games, it seemed natural to drop the "e" when Xbox first appeared (I didn't think of possible connections with Xtra - ISP).

"extramalt" came from my thrist for Mac's Extra Strong Malt Lager.

Malasiah is a combination of my two sons names Mala = Malachi and siah = Isaiah.  Hence the correct pronounciation of my gamer tag is mal - a - sigh - ah and not some funny way of spelling malaysia as I often here it pronounced during online play. Which as a result was the main reason for putting the way it is supposed to be pronounced onto my gamecard, as no offence to my asian brothers and sisters but it was supposed to sound like an exotic manly name yaw yaw yaw grunt yaw......but when I noticed how people were mispronouncing it well it started to feel a little girlie.  Still I love my sons very much and decided to stick with it, so with a little eductaion people online started to slowly learned how to correctly pronounce it.  Though occasssionally some people use the latter as a form of a diss not due to ignorance, which I just laugh off and move on.

My gamertag came from when I used to play Mario Party 4 & 5 on the Gamecube with my partner and neices. We always made a joke of ganging up on the person (or CPU) who played as Donkey Kong and used to say "Get the monkey" when the chance arose.

Lounge Gremlin was a culmination of things. I had a list of around 50 gamertags that I liked. Then I did a process of elimination and Lounge Gremlin stood out above the rest. I have it sign-written across the back of my Subaru Legacy Wagon.

I tihnk I prefer the lounge to my office or bedroom, as it's a place where I can relax as opposed to work or sleep. Hey, who doesn't like Gremlins? So the two words fit perfectly in my book.

My one was a nickname given to me back in high school when I used to play a lot of basketball. My coach thought I was such a solid defender so he started calling me Mr. Steel.

Re: Gamer Tags

Mine came from my car (that unfortunately I had to sell before my son was born a few years ago). Was a 1992 VP HSV Senator (purple, 200kw), was an awesome car that had the most fantastic exhaust note (as only V8s do) especially in carpark buildings, would even set off car alarms.

I have the name Senator on gamespy (especially for BF2 on PC) but unfortunately when I went to register a gamertag, it was gone, so got "stuck" with NZSenator.

Re: Gamer Tags

The origin of RacyDoodlebug:

Years ago, when working for *ahem* Telecom just after it became privatised, my deskphone display would show my name as below:

MacInnes Do

The guys at work noticed this when transferring calls to me or conferencing me into calls and started calling me:

Doodle / Doodles

After a few months, this then got expanded out to:

Doodlebug

As being vertically challenged, I can, when pushed or hacked off, be a volatile substance like the actual Doodlebug V1 missile that was used in WWII, built by Germans and used against the British in the London Bombings.

This then eventually got shortened to Bug which is what alot of my friends call me now, or "Aunty Bug" as I am known to my god-daughter.

When I finally got broadband in Sept, 2004 and got an xbox subscription, the first name I went for was: Doodlebug but alas this was already taken......Sad [:(]

The alternative that was thrown up was "RacyDoodlebug" and since then it's been my gamertag. Smile [:)]

Hmmm, but now everyone calls me either Racy or Doodles, argggghhhhhh!!!

Cheers,

-Racy. Smile [:)]Drinks [D]

Re: Gamer Tags
When it was time for me to choose my GT, I typed in my nickname 'Chickenman', unfortunately it was gone. So I could have done something like 'Ch1ck3nm4n' or similar, but I'm just not cool enough to pull it off. Because this was my first forray into online gaming, localising my GT by making it 'Chickenman NZ' didn't come until way later (Chickenman NZ is the 2nd GT I have now BTW)

So I thought why not something totally different, I thought of tags like Mass Murderer and such, but realised I will suck. With a tag like that and sucking, it's sure fire way to get dissed by all and sundry. So I thought in the opposite direction and came up with 'ACompleteMuppet'.

So now if I snipe someone in a game I see the message ACompleteMuppet sniped *insert GT here*. But more importantly, they see *insert GT here* was sniped by ACompleteMuppet. Just to add insult to injury if they kill me they see *insert GT here* killed ACompleteMuppet. How can anybody get pleasure form that.

Chickenman

Re: Gamer Tags
As I tend to play single player I hadn't overly thought about what comes up when someone gets sniped / fragged etc.

I suspect it might work the same for me. Who wants to be fragged by NOL LUV DI?

My younger son plays Halo 2 online quite a bit and Farcry. If you play this let me know and I'll add you to the friends list.

One thing that pisses me off about my GT is that every 1/10 Americans will sing about it, and another 2/10 will ask for some Bourbon and Cola. And its only Americans that do it!

I originaly had Jezza, which got turned to Jezza Hardy back when I was a wrestling fanboy. Then one of my closest net frineds killed herself and I was looking for a new image. She used to call herself l)ark and so out of respect for her and to never forget her I changed my name. I jsut happened to have a copy of Splinter Cell in my x-box at the time. Since then it's stuck. Although I'm more known as DC for short. the NZ is well. cause some idiot already had the Dark Cell name xD

Re: Gamer Tags

what a brilliant read . . . .

GT's i use are as follows

Kumara Kid

KK NZ

KK the impailer

   - reason for choosing, would like to tell tales of humour however it was a politically correct choice based on having something kiwi-ish and unknown to crazy americans back when we were testing live before launch, now its kinda stuck - more often than not peepz call me KK as opposed to my real name around the office, was a little strange to have work mates yelling KK at me accross a very crowded room of americans - about the only time i really feared for my life !

Little Fat Man

   - ummmmm, go figure !

and a couple of super secret other ones that are know to pop up everynowe and then and smash you (never with voice on), just to maintain a little unknown-ness so people don't see its "that guy from MS" and go all "wierd crazy *** kicking smash him like".

Mine is fairly self explanatory. I like the colour yellow so therefore like kowhai trees.

Also like Kumara Kid, I liked the fact that it is distinctly kiwi so distinguishes itself from other GTs.

Used to be InvisibleA1 from Counter Strike glory on Xbox then when that ran out i needed a new one so i paid homage to my man Notorious and picked Mr Frank White.

Its alright, Americans love it, cos of the film "King of New York" Plus i emcee in my spare time, so people like to challenge me to a freestyle battle when we play! 5-0  and still the undisputed king of the Xbox live Freestlye battle circuit........... Mr Frank "just call me Franky" White Baby-baby!!!
