Re: Busted Disc Drive Club
Same here guys, my xbox is going back today, its scratched 10 of my 13 disks, most of them bought in the last 9 months, my COD4 totally unplayable now. funny xbox support over the phone tried to tell me the whirring nioses i hear when i put the disk into the xbox is the fan, if the fan is makin that kinda niose, it needs to be sent back

the thing i dont get is how m$ is not replacing th disks that the xbxox scratched, theyll only repalce my halo 3 disk, so know i have only one half decent game which i can really play.

So my question is, why are we paying for something that we didnt do, but the xbox did, which can be repaired, so why dont they replace our disks as well?

RE: Busted Disc Drive Club

I've got a problem as well...Everytime I insert a Xbox 360 game, I get the statement that I have to put the disc in a Xbox 360 console (last time I checked...it was stil a 360 console). I've got this problem with all my 360 games.

Strangely though, I don't have any problems with Xbox original games or movies.

I would like to get it fixed, but the problem is, my warranty has expired (figures!).

Can anyone help me?

I got my third 360 back in January of this year. That died within 3 months. Cause of death, Unreadable Disc Error.

You can buy a replacement drive for $50 (I bought mine from llamma.com) then swap the circuit board from your old drive with the new one (you need it so the xbox recognizes the new drive). Hope this helps.

You can add me to the list. One of my three 360's will not read discs. Strange thing is...if I take the hard drive off of it, for some reason it reads the disc. Anyone ever heard of that before?

When I called MS about my unreadable disc errors one of the steps they had me do was remove my drive and try the disc. In my case it didn't matter, but I wonder if yours can be fixed. Have you tried using the maintenance code to erase the cache from your drive? Read this http://news.teamxbox.com/xbox/11131/Xbox-360-Cache-Clear-Code-Revealed/

Well this is another club I don't want to be apart of, my first was the RRoD back in Nov 07. I am now getting unplayable disk for everything I put in the drive. It's a good thing I got the extended svce pln from target, now I just have one Q, I don't feel like losing all my saved games so would I be able to keep my HD and let target keep the new one.

Thanks

Re: Busted Disc Drive Club

I guess I'm a new member of the club.  Every once in a while, COD and GTA wouldn't load.  Then it gave me the unreadable disc error.  That happened for about 4 or 5 times.  Then it wouldn't even acknowledge that a disc is present in the tray.

MS wants $100 to fix it.  *sigh*

Re: RE: Busted Disc Drive Club

Thats how it started for me... "Please place this game in your Xbox 360 console". But if I kept trying it would work. then the noise, oh GOD THE NOISE!!!!! I thought the game was gonna come flying out at me! it didn't.... that first time anyway. Eventually the games would be spinning at speed and jumping out of my xbox like some possesed ninja star that is out to maim simply because I dared to touch the eject button.

Two copies of COD4 and a rental store swap out of Halo later, it just started refusing to play certain disks altogether. So I bought Devil May Cry 4 the day it came out... I've still never played it... got mad and didn't touch the pos for while. Then Soul Calibur came out. My friend is enjoying that game as much as DMC4.

Xbox support LIED to me. Surprise?? I really am an idiot.

I called and they said they've never heard of an issue like this one that I have. It must be the fan that I hear... yeah... it also has a vendetta against me and my jungular. I always thought I saw a little tine Fan person throwing disks at me and arbitrarily deciding what games I'm allowed to play.

Anyway. Heres the best part... I sent it out, got it back in a week. Refurb?? no same serial number.

Oh ok that just must mean that its such a common issue they have a standerd fix. Open, Swap, Shut, Ship... right? no... They sent me a letter explaining that it was repaired and working up to "Microsoft Standards" so of course I'm intruiged at what these standards must be if they dont include functionality.

The lady tells me that its been repaired when I call. So I ask, "Would you mind telling me exactly what was done?". "Sure", She says. Then (this is the best part),"Oh... um.. well sir, it seems that your xbox was found to have no problems, and since we dont have any other reports of issues like yours we sent it back to you."

AAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I was told in writing it was fixed, on the phone, and now that this doens't happen to other people.

I'm sendind it back. I would like this to be my induction letter into the club. Thank you for letting me rant a bit.

Re: Busted Disc Drive Club
My RRoD replacement never had a 100% drive in it.  Once in awhile, it would either not open or open about 1" and stop.  Repeating the eject sequence would make it work.

Didn't worry too much about it but started to hear about the scratching issue (never did mine, thank goodness) and got to replace with the Benq drive.

Much happier now.  The jet engine is out of my living room.

Re: Busted Disc Drive Club

hey guys I don't want to join the club but I may have to. My Xbox is a 2006 system that until recently I thought didnt have many issues. I few of mmy games have been cracked though. The disc will have a small crack that will over time spread and ruin the game. My first game to suffer from this was Oblivion. I was at a friends house and he was playing it and got the disk unreadable error. I took the disc out and cleaned it and it worked for the rest of the night. When I got home though I put the disc in and it told me it was unreadable. Thinking I crushed it in my bag i brought to my friend's house I had the disc replaced, no problem. Later I noticed my Call of Duty 2 disc also had a similar crack. Eventually it began to say unreadable disc. Well I ignored it and had no problems for some time. On September 25, 2007 I bought the Halo 3 limited edition game. I did not use the limited edition case because I heard it caused cracking. Over the course of a few months a crack was in the transparent layer. I ignored it because the game worked and I started storing my games in a disc sleeve. But in Febuary 2008 the crack extended into the game data area and certain maps didn't load and eventually it quit loading altogether. I figured this happened because it already had the crack. So reading the forums I kept my games in a sleeve but now I have a crack in my COD4 disc. I am pretty pissed off right now. I have gone through more games with this system then any other system. I figure it is the Xbox because thats the only thing I can explain it with. If anyone knows whats causing this or how to fix this plz tell me because I am out of warranty and I do not know how much it costs to fix it.

I have the Xbox with the Hitachi drive if anyone knows whats causing this plz tell me.

I calculate the money I have lost like this: these are the prices I payed for the games not their current value.

 Collecters Edition of Oblivion: $70

Call of Duty 2 Game of the Year Edition: $60

Halo 3 Limited Edition: $70

Call of Duty 4: $60

Total: $260 wasted!

Mine has been doing the unplayable disk thing for a while now, off and on of course.  Sometimes it would go a few days with out saying it.  Now I could not get it to not do it so I took it into Best Buy because i bought a replacement plan from them and I have my new cooler running elite to play.  forza 2 is a great game too.
Currently working on ODST and Waiting on COD MW2.

I'll keep my story short. I sent my Xbox off to be repaired because the xbox kept making rings around the inside of all discs i put in. It broke my new Viva Pinata game, gears of war and shadowrun. And to the person two posts above me mine was a Hitachi drive too.

Sent in on friday.

Re: Busted Disc Drive Club
I've got a strange one. Drive is not dead, but sometimes it recognizes a game disc as a DVD, and if I try to play the game, I get a "Please play this disc on an Xbox 360 Console" message (I guess its the same message you get if you put a 360 game in a regular DVD player or a PC).  If you turn the console on and off it will work after that.  Also, sometimes the disc will randomly spin down during a game, and you'll get choppy audio or a long load time, but then it recovers and spins back up.  Its easy to tell if its spinning or not because its as loud as a jet engine when its spinning (especially while playing CoD4 which seems to constantly spin the disc at full speed). No scratches or anything like that.  For a while it was making this terrible noise when you quit to the dashboard and the drive spun down, but it hasn't been doing that for a while (??).  And sometimes the drive will just work for hours and hours with no problems.  Its a Samsung drive, so I'll probably just buy a new one from Llamma and replace it once my RROD warranty is up (if it lives that long).

This console is the one I got back after my second RROD and the disc drive seemed fine before this console was sent back, so I probably got a crap one back from MS.  But I've had this one for over a year and the drive is still working, despite the strange issues....

I got Smackdown vs Raw 2009 and Fallout 3 the other day and when I play Smackdown the xbox makes a louder then normal noise when reading the disk and also a screeching noise when i exit to the dashboard but Fallout 3 and Fable 2 sounds normal, is this a normal thing or should I be worried?

Also I checked the smackdown disk and there are no visible scratches it looks perfect.

Re: Busted Disc Drive Club
So I understand you have to pay if you get a DVD drive problem. Isn't there some way you can purposely get the RRoD if you have a disc problem so they will fix it for free? I'm sure you could make the hardware fail somehow without opening it up. Perhaps drop it or use a very powerful magnet on it? I know this sounds kind of stupid, but I honestly feel they should repair it for free.

unforutanely for me i have 2 xbox and both are broken, one has RRoD, the other displays  "unplaybale Disc" in the open tray section. and when i open the disc again i see its at the same angle as before so that means its not spinning anything. it happened for everything i put into the xbox, Games, DVDs, and CDs. now i have to spend 99$ to renew a warranty, when i just bought it 3 months ago second hand and was led to believe it was new.
