The real question is how many people asked for help, or complimented you, asked to be your friend, and you never heard them?

That is a good point. They might see me as being rude for not commenting back at their compliment or helping them. The ratio of good comments to bad ones is really low though and I think it is still in my best interest to mute people.
However, in the light of your comment I will try to at least give people a chance more often now. If I am in a nice mood that is. Otherwise I might be tempted to say something back if I am already in a heated mood or bothered by something else.
How does that sound?

If a trash talker is muted, did he/she ever say anything?

I wonder how many people have talked trash to me that I never heard?  Haha.

If you planed to mute everyone every time you play why even use a mic in game, unless you just like to wear it?

I don't play online at all anymore and don't remember the last time I did. It's been months, if not a year or more.

Because people are trash, that's why. I play games to get away from people, not to wallow in the cesspool of their collective psychological filth.

That reminds me. Time to clear space on friends list. The "person is online" popups take me out of the game, but I don't want to turn off the announcements altogether because I might get a message from someone who matters. Maybe they could let you keep certain messages on while disabling others.

OH GOD MY PRECIOUS EARS!!!!

This is ridiculous. The world is full of people who cuss and use racial slurs. They are everywhere. There is no stopping it.

Submitting negative reviews and filing complaints is ultimately there to shut people up, make them feel good about tattling on a baddie on Xbox.

But the reality of it is, this won't stop. Complaining to us is stupid and a waste of everyone's time.

If you don't like to hear cursing and slurs, by all means, play with your cussless slurless friends or just mute everyone.

That's all you can do in the end, along with stop whining.

So, if I complain about you complaining about people complaining in general, wouldn't you naturally turn around and complain about me complaining about you?

And so the cycle continues...

I have the multiplayer chat set to speakers when there is not a mic attached. That's why. So don't just assume I attach a headset every time I play.

No I wouldn't complain. I've said what I had to say a few posts up, and if people have differences about what I put up and want to discuss it, i'll be glad to respond then.

Theres the problem, your over exposing yourself to the players, and having to mute the majority to cope with it... no wonder your have become so mute happy. And whats with the sensitive post...its not like I would have had a problem with you wearing your mic with everyone muted, it just seemed odd. Almost as odd as running everyone over your speakers and muting anyone that talks.
But once again perfectly within your power and right to do so, just as it is perfectly acceptable for me to ask why you would bother when turning them off at the speakers would effectively solve your issue without the hassle of muting everyone session after session.

Re: I just cant believe microsoft doesn't do more about this.
Sadly dude there is nothing Microsoft cna do about this unless they record every conversation and every game. And that will only make them lose money. We all have to remember is they are a company and this would knock out alot of customers. So ya if they are being rude, racists, or both just mate them ten when the game is over report them. Also dude i am 15 i was alsobrought up like this and what some of these kids do is just apaulling. I have alot of candian friends online and offline (some moved to my town from canada). I play with them alot if people ingame find out about that they do not shut up. It is always nice to hear the uneducated mind express themselves :P. But ya just leave them and mute them and report them is all that you can do.
Your destiny is in my hands.

Don't make sarcastic comments like that (the red) Unless I just like to wear it? And you ask why I responded the way I did?

Just don't assume. If lack of information seems to present itself ( which is my fault, I thought it was obvious), you don't assume, you ask questions instead.

If I am in a private chat with a friend and another person on my friends list joins the game I am in and starts talking, all I have to do is unplug my mic and I can hear him via the speakers. That is better then, switching in and out of private chats in order to hear a person. It's faster and more efficient. And if I need to respond to them I just send them a fast voice message.

And why are you being critical of how I handle people online? I pay for my Xbox, my Gold account, my games, etc. I am completely within my rights as a customer to use the options that Microsoft provides as I see fit. If you don't agree, tough.

It was not a sarcastic comment, I actually know people who do have a habit of wearing their mic, be it plugged in or not. We both assumed a little too much, perhaps if you would have elaborated in the first place? I would not have questioned you at all, as I would have understood you that you do keep in contact with some players.
Also I was not critical of your alleged methods, only inquisitive. I am sorry you are so offended to such a degree by so simple a miscommunication.

Dont flame me, but you are forgetting Freedom of Speech........Anyone should be able to say what ever they want......if you are offended by it there is a mute button. And file a complaint or give them bad feedback

No flame here, but I respectfuly disagree.

With Freedom of Speech comes Responsibility of Speech.  This is where people use cliche lines about yelling "fire" in a crowded theater or "I have a gun" in front of the president or "I have a ham sangwich" in front of Britney Spears.  You can say what you want, but when what you say isn't socially responsibile, there can be penalties such as being arrested, shot, or eaten by a hungry psuedo-celebrity.

Personally, swearing like the proverbial trucker and/or sailor is not enough to file a complaint.  Racism, genderism, etc. are.  Negative feedback, or mute both work for me though it gets tiresome when you are in a team game and have to mute your team because they won't stop yelling at the "kill stealing newb."

Well said. The human mind is capable of making social decisions based on the situation. Here's the situation. You are talking to real people with real feelings and real lives. What you say can and does affect others whether you like it or not. I don't know about you, but I would never talk that way to somebody in person, and I'm not going to talk that way to somebody over the internet either.

On the other hand, research has proven that through indirect communication (texting, emails, IMs, etc) where you cannot see the other person physically, it takes out a large part of the social atmosphere that regulates what you say. This means that if you can't see the person, you can't pick up on nonverbal communication (body language) and facial cues. In a social context, your emotions leak out and the other person can relate with you, thus keeping in check what that person says. But since you can't pick up on those clues, its easier for your mind to let loose whatever you want to say. At least on Xbox Live you can hear the other person's voice. That helps.

But regardless; there is never an excuse to ever treat anybody any less than you would treat yourself or anybody else you care about. Even when you get angry or upset at others, you can still stay respectful. You can learn how to put somebody in their place without cussing them out in any way, or attacking that person (that is actually a strategy used by people who know they are wrong. They can't destroy the opposing argument, so they destroy the opposition). This allows you to remain respectful even to people whom you don't like. This issue is about knowing WHAT to say and WHEN. This is also about the maturity of the people to take responsibility for their own words and actions, and the ability of the players to actually care about the other person.

Well said Myuzik, it is also important once again to reiterate, freedom of speech ends when you sign into xbox live. At that point you are entering into a private paid membership club and under its ruling freedom of speech is null. Much like students on a public campus, even at seventeen your freedoms are temporarily suspended when under direct governmental shepherding.
