Thanks to Scorpion1981 for providing us with the FAQ.
Quick Storyline:
The Dragon King tricks a well-intentioned monk into setting him free, by telling the monk that he is working for the Gods. This is the “deception”. The monk’s name is Shujinko, and the main character of this game. The only was to fully understand the story is to play through “Konquest” mode, which you want to do anyway. Konquest mode is key to unlocking many of the characters in the game.
Now, on to the FAQs
(FAQ in two sections – “The Basics” is about general questions and information about the game. “The Rest” is about how to unlock all the characters and arenas.)

THE BASICS
What are the controls?
Attack 1 = X
Attack 2 = Y
Attack 3 = A
Attack 4 = B
Change Style = L
Block = R
Throw = Black
Pick up arena weapons = White
D-pad = Move character in Arcade/Chess/Puzzle modes
Left Thumb Stick = Move Shujinko in Konquest mode
Right Thumb Stick = Control the camera in Konquest/Chess modes
These are the default controls, you can change them in “Game Options” menu.
How do I setup a personal profile?
From the Main Menu, choose “profiles” (second option from the bottom). You can create a profile on either the Hard Drive, or a Memory Unit. A profile is mostly important for “The Krypt”, anyone who has played “Deadly Alliance” should remember what The Krypt is. It’s shorter this time, going from A-T instead of A-Z.
When you create your profile, pick an icon to represent your profile as well as a password. This is very important, WRITE YOUR PASSWORD DOWN! If you forget what it is, there is no way to get that info and you’ll have to make a new profile, thus losing whatever “Koins” you collected.
What is The Krypt?
The Krypt is a huge room filled with 400 Koffins. (AA, AB, AC, etc. all the way up to TT). Using the Koins you collected/earned, you can buy a koffin. There are different price tags on the koffins, and different colors for each. Example: 47 Platinum Koins, 132 Ruby Koins, etc. The Koffins have hidden items in them, sometimes they are pictures of the crew, or a video. And sometimes they are big things like a new arena to fight in, or a new character. The way you unlock most of the characters in the game are in the Koffins. While others you can get by fighting them in “Konquest” mode.
You select the Koffin that you want to open by moving the D-pad (left, right, up, down) then pressing “A” button to open it (provided you have enough Koins or a Key).
When you read how to unlock characters below, keep in mind that the instructions are to get the Koffin Key. You still have to go in the Krypt and open the correct Koffin. (The Koffin letters are on the keys, so you know which one to go to).
What is Konquest?
It is like an adventure game in itself, but very easy to complete. Why is it easy, because you can’t die in it. No one can hit you (unless you hit them first, then they might give you one punch back).
In Konquest you’ll learn combos and other useful tricks for when you play Arcade mode. Such as “dial-a-combo” in which you have to use all 3 fighting styles. You will need to be logged in to your “player profile” in order to play Konquest. You can also find “Krypt Keys” in Konquest. Earlier I mentioned that you can unlock most of the characters in The Krypt. Well those koffins are locked and need a special key to open them “as apposed to Koins”. They Krypt Keys are found on Konquest. When you find one, it will tell you what it unlocks and the letters of the koffin
In Konquest, you can pick up certain items that as of yet, no one has any idea what they do. Such as the “colored keys” there is one for ever Koin color (red, white, black, blue, green, yellow). The Koins are: Ruby, Platinum, Onyx, Sapphire, Jade, Gold.
Although you can collect them, you can’t do anything with them. There are other items like that in Konquest. So if you find one of these items, don’t get frustrated if you can’t figure out what it does. Other items are useful, such as the “lock pickers set” that you can find by knocking out a robber in your village at night. The lock pickers set can unlock *most* locked doors. There are still some locked doors that you can not open (such as the big door to the interior village). Once you complete your combo training in the interior village and are allowed to leave to begin your adventure, you can never re-enter it, so take your time to explore it since you’ll never get another chance (unless of course, you create a new player profile).
What are Koins?
This will be a quick read, there isn’t really much to say about Koins other then they are found all over Konquest, and you win them by fighting in the Arcade mode. (Make sure you log in with your player profile in Arcade, or else you won’t earn any koins).
Koins are used to open up Koffins, you can also use them in betting in the vs. if you are playing with a friend and you both have a player profile. In two-player mode, with two players having their own profile and koins, both players can hit BLACK button on the “Character Select Screen” to open up the betting menu and place a bet.
What is a Breaker?
Breakers are a way to “break out” of a combo your opponent is doing to you. To do a Breaker, just hold FORWARD and BLOCK at the same time. You are limited to 3 Breakers per match. You will see icons below the health bar, those are your Breaker icons. When they are all used up, you can do a Breaker anymore for that match. Some modes or special situations only allow 1 or 2 Breaker per match (such as in Chess Kombat). Breakers don’t do any damage, so if you’re trying to get a Flawless Victory and get hit by a Breaker, don’t worry about it. You’ll still get the Victory if you haven’t been hit by anything else.
How can I do Random Select?
While in the character select screen, press UP and A while highlighting scorpion and you will get a random pick. (Player 2 highlights sub-zero).
How can I do a Level Select?
While at the Character Select Screen, press the BLACK button to select your unlocked Arenas.
(Doesn’t work in 1-player Arcade mode. Only in VS. Mode and Practice mode)
What is Chess Kombat?
You can select to play Chess from the main menu. This version of Chess is similar to a regular game, with a few differences.
1, The pieces are called: Leader, Champion, Shifter, Sorcerer, Grunt.
2, You can place one death trap per game.*
3, To “capture” a piece, you must play one round of Mortal Kombat.
4, There are two extra columns on both sides of the playing field, empty at the start of the game.
* Before the game starts, you will be shown a side view of the game board. To place a death trap, move the yellow circle using the controller to the place you’d like it to be placed, then hit “X”. You may also hit “B” to place “fake traps”. Fake traps means that the “ding” will sound (indicating that a trap has been set) but no trap will be set. This is useful in two-player games, as the other player can see where you put the yellow circle. To finish either hit “A” for wait for the time limit to end.
To select a piece to move, move the yellow circle with either the D-pad or the Control stick, then press “A”. A lighted path will show you how many spaces that piece may move, and in which directions.
There are two Sorcerers, two Campions, two Shifters, eight Grunts, and one Leader.
The different pieces will have different power levels. The Champions are the strongest, and the Sorcerers are the weakest.
The Leader is the “king” in the game. Protect the Leader, and try to take the opponents Leader. I usually place the character I’m strongest with, as the Leader. That way if the opponent is somehow able to attack my Leader, I’m ready for him/her.
The Shifters have the ability to change into your opponent’s character. Example: If your Shifter is Sub-Zero and the piece on the opponent’s side that you’re fighting is Scorpion, then your Sub-Zero will “morph” into Scorpion. Also, the power level of the Shifter changes to whatever the power level is of the character you’re fighting. The only time a Shifter doesn’t change, is if you’re fighting another Shifter, or your opponent’s character just happens to be the same character as your Shifter. Also, if two Shifters are fighting each other, then their power level is both 100%.
The Sorcerers are probably the most valuable pieces in the game, and since they are also the weakest they should be protected as much as the Leader. The Sorcerers can cast spells, such as “Kill”, “Imprison” and “Teleport”. There are a total of eight spells you can cast. On the “spell list” there are four written in blue and four written in yellow/orange. These correspond with the two Sorcerers. One of the Sorcerers holds a blue flame ball, and the other one holds a yellow/orange flame ball. Killing one of these Sorcerers will remove the colored part of the spell list. Killing both Sorcerers removes all of the spells.
The Champions are like the “Queens” in a standard game of Chess. They can move as many squares in the same direction as they want.
The Grunts are the “Pawns” in standard Chess. There are eight of them, just like the Pawns. They are the first line of defense between your opponent’s pieces and your Leader. They may move up to two spaces forward at any one time, and one space diagonal.
When you do finally capture the Leader, your piece will perform Fatality 1 automatically. If you’re playing as Noob-Smoke, then you’ll want to switch to Noob before the final blow to your opponent. Otherwise, the Fatality won’t be performed (as mentioned below, only Noob can do Fatality 1 and only Smoke can do Fatality 2).
What is Puzzle Kombat?
You can select “Puzzle” from the main menu. It is sort of like “Tetris” and “Columns” mixed into one (if you played either game, you’d know what I mean).
Colored blocks will fall from the sky, and it is your job to match them. When you complete one stage in Puzzle Kombat, you’ll move on to the next one. Once you complete all the stages, you’ll see something pretty cool. The Puzzle Fighters will pose for you.
One of the better things about Puzzle Kombat, is that you can earn Platinum and Onyx Koins.
Besides the colored blocks, there are also “Breakers” and “Bombs”. Breakers are an important part of the game. The Breakers dragon symbols, the same color as the blocks. If you’re stacking up a pile of red blocks, then a red Breaker hits those blocks, the blocks will be cleared. This is the object of the game. You need certain colored Breakers in order to clear certain colored blocks.
Bombs are used to clear ALL blocks of a certain color. If a Bomb hits a yellow block, all yellow blocks will be cleared, even if none of them are touching. There is a Bomb Bonus if the Bomb hits the bottom floor of the puzzle.
There is a “Super Meter” that will fill up as you progress in the game. The Bomb Bonus can boost the Super Meter. Other things such as “combos” can boost the Super Meter. A combo is when you can make two or more clears at the same time. Example: You make red blocks clear, the blocks above them fall and cause a blue blocks to clear (two clears for the price of one). Once the Super Meter is full, press the “X” button to perform a special move. Each character has their own special move, some more powerful than others. Those with more powerful specials will take longer to fill up their Super Meter than those with weaker specials.
THE REST
Unlike in other Mortal Kombat games, you will know exactly who you can unlock. Their picture is on the “Character Select Screen” but greyed out so you can’t select them, until you unlock them.
How do I unlock Shujinko?
Shujinko is one the main character of this game. He is the monk that let the Dragon King free unknownly. That should give you a hint on how to unlock him.
To unlock Shujinko all you have to play through Konquest mode once. Making Shujinko the easiest character in the game to unlock. If you go through Konquest quickly and follow the green light pointing to your next task, then you should finish it within the hour if not sooner.
To unlock Shujinko’s moves however, is more involved. He is the only character whose moves and Fatalities you have to unlock. To unlock his moves, you must play Konquest a second time (after you already played through it once). You can’t unlock his moves the first time through Konquest, basically since you didn’t unlock him yet until you finish Konquest once.
In Konquest, every part of the map as a region number/letter, you’ll find this at the top of the screen in Konquest mode. So for example “A-1" refers to the part of the map that is also named “A-1".
All of Shujinko’s moves are “copies” of other player moves. When I list a move, I’ll list the person the move is copied from.

* Some people say the move looks like Ermac’s and Kenshi’s, but it has a green glow, which obviously means it is Ermac’s, since Kenshi’s move has a blue glow.
Flying Jinko (Raiden’s move A.K.A. “superman move”) can be found in “Edenia” at location “E-5"
Where -> Near the portal at anytime

Where -> Inside a cave on the 16th of any month

Liu Kang would be the hardest character in the game to unlock, unless of course you had this guide or another similar to give you the answer.
