A very nice capture device is the Hauppauge HD PVR

http://www.hauppauge.com/site/products/data_hdpvr.html

Here is a video on it

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jTWcDMjwlmQ

This will capture through componet cables, therefor supporting 1080i.

Research yourself a little to find out more info.
And it gets to your computer through USB.

Does all of this work in the UK though? I have just brought the Dazzle Platinum one. (black) currently at work, going to try and set it all up when I get home, but I keep reading that it doesnt support PAL60, although Ive been told in another post that setting this dazzle to NTSC will still work?

Very good choice, but I made the mistake of not checking the requirements therefor I need to buy a new computer for it to work.  (It needs 2.0 gHz I only have 1.8 on my laptop... :(  )

Get a longer cord then.

That may not work due to the fact that USB has a limited connection strength.  You can buy a single booster.

O ightoy you meant about something else. If you have a laptop you can use that. If not, Get the Pinnacle video transfer, it doesn't need cords just uses flash drive.

Could anyone recommend a cheap recording device?  I'm not looking to do any editing.  I would just like to record and upload to youtube for personal use.

3. What would a example of the composite cable I would need?

Is there anything else I would need?

Re: A Beginner's Guide to the Capture Card.
Everyone recommends the Dazzle, but an EasyCap can be just as good.  It's just knowing which model to take.  Make sure it records in PAL60 if you're from a PAL region.

Just got an EasyCap and tried my first video as a test.  This is what kind of quality £20 will get you....

Not bad for the price.

If you end up getting this then you will need to get an RCA distribution amplifier, something similar to this. The reason I say this is because when you use a Y splitter it splits the video signal in half so you get HALF the picture quality going to your tv and the Dazzle. With an amp, it distributes the signal equally to both so you get the same quality as what is coming out of your xbox. Hope this helps.

Re: A Beginner's Guide to the Capture Card.
This is indeed a large thread and i didnt read many of the posts so i dont know if it's been mentioned but i currently use the Blackmagic Intensity Pro Capturing card. You can check out my youtube videos that i've made with it.  They're located at www.youtube.com/steelahlive thanks.

It's a great card that allows for up to 1080 capturing over hdmi or component.  I simply use the 720p capturing over HDMI. Either way if you want high quality captures this is the card.  Audio needs to be captured from a separate software however.  This is a bug in the device that the manufacture stated before i ever bought the card.  This is easily rectified by using your computer's Line INput option and setting up some audio recording software.  Then it's just a matter of cutting the two clips together.  I use the WMV Format for everything and enjoy it.  Check it out.

Later,
Steel

Thanks for linking those videos. I don't think I've seen any 360 captures with the Blackmagic Intensity so it's good to know that not only does it work, but it looks very good also.

I have a Dazzle [Red one] and my quality is alright but could be better.  Should I buy a S-Video cable?  Will that make the quality better?

S-Video is not capable of HD formats.  Only 480i/p I believe.

Sure, you won't get HD, but the SD signal will look better with an S-video cable.

Re: A Beginner's Guide to the Capture Card.
Well, I bought my HDTV a while back now and am now looking into video capture again. Goodness me, it's all so confusing.Sad [:(]

I'm currently considering the Blackmagic Design Intensity Pro or the Hauppauge HD PVR. I'm currently leaning towards the Blackmagic due to the fact it can record in SD as well, meaning I'd only need 1 capture card instead of 2, though I'm guessing SD cards are dirt cheap these days.

In any case, I was wondering how it's all connected? I've watched a few different videos and tried to read up on it as much as I can but I'm still a little confused. Can anyone explain to me in layman's terms what this diagram is all about?

http://www.blackmagic-design.com/downloads/manuals/eng/IntensityManual.pdf

Re: the breakout cable, is this only applicable to component cables? So, if I used HDMI, all I'd need is an HDMI in and HDMI out? How does it connect to the 360/TV/PC?

I hope someone can help me out with all this. I'm so close to getting awesome quality videos but would rather know what I was doing first before buying.Smile [:)]

Edit: Also, I've heard that there are a lot of issues with audio lag. Does anyone know how to rectify that if it becomes a problem?

Re: A Beginner's Guide to the Capture Card.
I didnt read the entire thread but I wanted to throw in suggestion. I bought Hava titanium HD: http://www.myhava.com/product_hava_titanium.html?Submit4.x=41&Submit4.y=10 . You can find a better price at buy.com ($97.00) than the suggested retail price on this web site.

It only connects to component HD, so only works with the older xbox 360s. With 2 triple component connectors http://images.monoprice.com/productlargeimages/30022.jpg you can connect the xbox 360 to record your gameplay to your PC hard drive or a external HDD connected directly to the hava.. My hava box is connected to the component output of the cable box and I use the HDMI output of the cable box to use with my HDTV. Just a simple switching around of cables and I can record the xbox 360.

Any xbox 360 can use the component HD cables, even if it didn't come with them.
