Battlefield 2: Modern Combat Online Success Guide/FAQ

Hello everybody, I am going to be writing a guide to show how to be a successful, and great soldier on the battlefield. I hope this helps people of all different skill levels, and play styles.
First things first:
Classes and Tips:
Assault:
The spearhead of most offensive operations. They are armed with an assault rifle, grenade launcher (on the rifle), a pistol, and a fragmentation grenade. They are versatile, and prepared for almost all different scenarios, and circumstances.
As an assault soldier, your job is to get right into the midst of a battle, but you should still use common sense. When traveling in enemy territory, it is smart to have you and someone else covering each other. You should not stray away from your team too often either, go wherever the majority of them are, because you don’t want to be in a 5 vs. 1 situation. Use the crouch and prone feature as much as possible too, as the lower you are to the ground, the less likely you are to get sniped, or get blown up, etc. With that said, you shouldn’t always crouch or go prone: When you are in the middle of a battle with multiple targets, you should try running as fast as you can away from the battle area, and if you have the opportunity to shoot back, by all means defend yourself.
---The Assault Rifle---
When using the assault rifle, use it with caution and have a shot lined up before you go waste bullets (because you are give a limited supply of them when you spawn). Saving rounds can also be beneficial to you, because shooting the assault rifle is noisy, and excessive bullet wasting could leave you in a tough situation. When firing the gun, use short bursts (pulse the right trigger). When closer up to the target, hold down the trigger.
Another big key is outflanking (out maneuvering) the enemy. Think about a situation before you go in, and try to find out where the enemy is traveling, and plan around that so you can get behind them. Flanking in BF2:MC is a key part, and you are dead meat if you don’t do it, so watch yourself and the enemy movements.
---The Grenade Launcher---
When using the grenade launcher on your gun, first select it. To use it, simply press RT and watch it soar. To further up you have your rifle, the greater shot trajectory it will have, and the higher it will fly. If you want this to be a success, try to avoid using it against tanks because it takes too long to destroy one with this weapon. Your best bet here is to use it against pockets of enemy soldiers, or smaller vehicles such as the jeep or troop transport vehicle. The grenade launcher has a medium to short range accuracy. You are given a limited quantity of them too (3 maximum), so it is in your best interest to conserve them as much as possible, and only use them when you really need to.
---The Fragmentation Grenade---
This is a multipurpose hand grenade used by multiple classes. It is best used against infantry and has limited effect on vehicles. You are given a short supply of them, so be conservative. The aiming works the same as the rifle grenade, the further up you aim, the longer it will go. If you aim directly up however, it will go up, and down again with no forwards direction so watch out. You are given 3 of these maximum.
Sniper:
The “eyes and ears” of modern combat. Use these snipers to your advantage if you’re not one, and stay well hidden if you are one. The snipers in this game are armed with a sniper rifle with multiple zoom ranges, a pistol, a smoke grenade, and a laser designator. He can also provide GPS for his team. The sniper is a valuable asset to any team in this game.
---Tactics---
When you are a sniper, the key is to stay back from everybody else, and stay well hidden. It doesn’t matter what kind of cover you have, just so long as you can get a clear view of mostly everything, and that enemies will have a hard time spotting you. Some good cover tips include: Lying down, or crouching, going behind an object/building, getting above the action (ie: going onto the roof of a building). It is also a great idea to change positions often, especially in this game where the kill-cam can spot you. Enemies are most likely to go where they saw you were, so try to back off every couple of kills or so. If you are spotted, you are pretty much helpless, but you have a few last minute options: Go Rambo, and take the circumstance like a man (usually not recommended), lie down and quickly moving out of the enemy’s line of fire, or you can quickly just go prone and hope the enemy loses you. The best option in most cases is to run quickly, although going prone can be very helpful.
Just keep this main point in mind: Snipers KEEP their distance from the rest of the pack, so try to stay back. You are not given a crosshair when closer up, so unless you can pinpoint your “no scopes” very well, you are in big trouble in close combat vs. an assault rifle or SMG. Also remember: Keep moving to avoid detection. Look around and think so you can get out or move using the best and safest route. (HINT: GPS is useful for this)
---The Sniper Rifle---
When shooting the sniper rifle, you will be more accurate if you lie down or crouch. The crosshair or reticule will be steadier. When lining up a shot, make sure you have the enemy in your sights. You will be spotted quickly if you miss. Try to aim for the head or chest too, because leg shots (don’t always) kill someone. Try to be very conservative when shooting too, because reloading with this kit is tedious, and eats away at time. If you need to reload, first scoot backwards from your current position, and don’t get up quite yet. Once reloaded, move slowly back to the spot you were, or change positions.
---The Laser Designator---
The laser target is another tool used by the snipers. To use it, or “paint” a target (must be a vehicle). To “paint” a target, scope in, and hold the RT (right trigger) on the vehicle you want targeted. You have to hold it, and it will go BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEBEEP. As soon as it reaches the BEEBEEP stage, the little laser target symbol should say “Target acquired”, and an explosive will rain down on the target, destroying it. Keep in mind, if the vehicle is under a bridge (or anything for that matter), the laser target missile will not hit the target, so make sure the target is clear from any cover. You can also pinpoint a helicopter, but this doesn’t seem to be as effective, as the helicopter pilot can simply evade the rocket. If the target moves behind something, the laser target will lose its lock-on, and you will have to hold the RT again.
---GPS (Global Positioning Satellite)---
One of the other final unique tools that the snipers of BF2:MC can utilize is the GPS (Global Positioning Satellite). This can be a very useful tool in helping your team get intel. Switch to the walkie-talkie, and pull the RT (right trigger). This will paint all of the enemies on the map for a limited time. You only get a few of them, and they take time to re-spawn, so use them wisely. You may also want to communicate with your team members, so you can activate GPS when they need it most.
---The Smoke Grenade---
Used for temporary cover. Use it just like the flash-bang, but you don't have to look away, as it will not flash at anything. It carries the sam problems for the most part as the flash-bang, it is not complete cover, and should only be used as one of the last resorts.
Special Ops:
The trained soldier in stealth and sabotage. His submachine gun and pistol come with silencers. His C4 charges, however, do not. Special ops also carry knives, and flashbang grenades.
---Tactics and the SMG---
First, a few tactics when being a special ops soldier: Try to hang low, almost like a sniper, but not too much. You will rely on stealth. Try to sneak up behind people using your SMG as your primary weapon. You can also take out enemy snipers using your melee weapon, your knife. The submachine gun itself is very accurate at short ranges for all countries. It is recommended that you use it only at medium to short ranges. It is basically useless at longer ranges, but very deadly closer up. The submachine gun shoots very quickly, and it can end someone faster than an assault rifle at close range. It is also recommended that you use stealth, and sneak around instead of going right to the middle of the action. Crouch and lie prone whenever possible or whenever it is smart too, because the accuracy of your gun drastically improves.
---The Flash-bang---
The flash-bang is another gadget granted to the special ops. It is a good tool to use when you need to clear out a building, or when you need to pass an enemy infested area. Use with caution however, as if you look at it when it goes off, it will stun you and your team too. Your best bet is too look away when throwing one (RT). You are also not given very many of them, so try to conserve as many as possible to use in those “tight” spots.
Although there are some downsides, making this item a lot less effective as it should be. When blinded, an enemy can still see the red dot above your head, making it pretty easy to just shoot where he/she sees the red dot. Still, this gadget is useful in a pinch.
---C4---
The C4 is also a very useful toy on the battlefield. To use it, first select it, and throw it using the right trigger. To detonate it, press the right trigger again. It is very useful when you want to stick it to tanks or other vehicles. Some other uses for it include: Putting it near conquest or CTF flags, putting them in buildings, putting them near objectives, and sticking to your own vehicle for a little “suicide run” (only for mentally unstable people).
You can also plant multiple C4s, by simply pressing the RT to place the C4, and then pressing reload (B) to go to another C4 pack. Rinse and repeat for more C4s. Keep in mind though that there is a limit as to how many C4s you can place at one time.
---The Combat Knife---
This is a last resort option. If you have to reload, and if you are in a close fight with an enemy, one knifing to the face should be effective. This can also be used to take out snipers who aren’t careful. Simply tap RT to knife someone in front of you.
Keep in mind though, that it is only effective if you don’t have any ammo whatsoever, or if you have to reload with your firearms. Typically, you shouldn’t try to pull off knife kills unless it is necessary, or if you are going for the commando achievement.
Engineer:
The engineer can fix vehicles with his blowtorch, as well as kill people with it. The engineer carries a shotgun, rocket launcher, pistol, and anti-vehicle mines. The mines are not sensitive enough for foot soldiers. Land mines dropped by your team will have a red caution sign over them.
---The Shotguns---
The shotgun varies for the different countries. The MEC, and Chinese forces have a pump action shotgun that is more powerful but takes more time to load, and the US and European forces have an automatic weaker one that has a greater rate of fire. Both variations are good in their own ways. The pump one is better if you have a good accuracy, but if you miss with it you are pretty much dead against the auto shotgun. In general, both shotguns are very close-ranged weapons, and they are useless against lets say an assault rifle. The engineers can be the armor support, or the infantry support in this game. They are useful if you have them backing up and protecting friendly armored vehicles, they are also useful to protect friendly infantry against enemy armored vehicles, or normal vehicles.
---The Rocket Launcher---
The rocket launcher that is given to every engineer has a very slow reload time, but a deadly payload. Depending on where you hit things, it can take out light vehicles in one shot, tanks in two (or one), and helicopters in one to two shots. Whenever there is a moving target, it is smart to aim ahead of the vehicle, so the vehicle drives right into the rocket. If it is against a helicopter, good luck, because it is extremely difficult to hit a moving target that is going so fast. Your best bet there is to simply wait until it comes to you, and line up your shot at a very safe distance and area.
---Anti-Vehicle Mines---
The anti-vehicle mines are a great thing to use often. If you want sudden kills, use them against your enemy. To use them, select them and hold the RT. They work the best around the enemy base, or anywhere near the objective areas (flags) where you might think an enemy will go. Don’t put too many in one place though since they start to disappear, and don’t bunch them in awkward places, because you don’t want a team kill on your record. So bottom line is put them: On the roads, or any other objective where an enemy vehicle is likely to drive.
---The Blowtorch---
The final gadget used is the blowtorch. Simple enough to use: Just select it, and press and hold the RT just in front of a damaged vehicle (normally it has smoke or flames coming out of it) until the vehicle you want to heal looks to be restored to its former look. You only get limited blowtorch gas for this, so don’t waste it. If you see a vehicle does not need fixing, don’t use it. This can also be used as a weapon: Sneak up behind an unsuspecting enemy, and hold the RT to hurt/and/or kill the enemy with the blowtorch.
A good thing to keep in mind: When powering up the blowtorch, there will be a slight delay (enough time for your character to turn on the gas valve of the blowtorch), so don’t expect instant flames coming from it.
Support:
The support soldier doubles as a combat troop and a medic. He carries a machine gun, a pistol, fragmentation grenades, and a syringe used to heal friendly soldiers. They are versatile soldiers that can be used on the frontline to lay down suppressing fire and make it hard for the enemy to advance.
---The Heavy Machine Gun---
The support gun given to support soldiers is a beast of a weapon and killing machine at closer ranges. It doesn’t have any sort of scope, and it has a fairly large crosshair, sometimes making it hard to hit things. When it does hit the target, it is a powerhouse. It is mainly effective against infantry, although it can double to take birds (helicopters) out of the air. To get better accuracy out of it, pulse the RT often. Also, do not reload the machine gun unless necessary, because it has tons of ammunition in its clip (100 rounds). Excessive reloads with this gun eats time.
Unfortunately, you cannot mount this gun on anything, but it is a good suppressive fire tool.
---The Mortar Strike---
The next gadget given to the support troops is the mortar strike. To use it, select the walkie-talkie looking device in your inventory. Then point it towards a target. A voice will start “Requesting mortar strike at these coordinates”, or sometimes it will appear in a different language depending on which country you’re fighting for. Anyways, hold the RT down until you hear “coordinates confirmed, strike is inbound” (voice may vary in languages). The strike is now called in that location, and a series of mortars will shower down on that area. Some tips for using this include: Firing it on an enemy position, or enemy base, firing it near a bunch of enemies (groups), firing it near groups of enemy vehicles. You should pay attention to where your friendly soldiers are though, as you do not want to team kill. That means: PAY ATTENTION SOLDIER! This can be very deadly, but you must watch where your friendly soldiers are.
Once you call a mortar strike, there will be a slight delay, and you will have to wait for it to “reload”, before you can call another one.
---The Auto-Injector---
Your next gadget is the auto injector syringe for healing your allies. This is fairly straight-forward, so I won’t go into it much. To use it, first select the syringe in your inventory. When you’re near a damaged friendly, press and hold the RT to jab it into the person. This feature is limited though, so use it wisely. Only use it if someone asks for it, and if their health is at a critical level.
There is a slight delay when jabbing the needle into a friendly, so don’t get impatient when healing someone. One final mention: Before someone asks this too: No, you cannot kill an enemy with the syringe. 0_0
---The fragmentation Grenade---

Pistols:
Pistols are the secondary weapon given to all classes. They are great for close range combat, and if you need to reload but just don’t have the time. They have a short range but they can drop people pretty quickly if the player is skilled. They should be used as your secondary weapons only, because they aren’t as powerful as the primaries. This gun can possibly have a silencer on it (if you are a spec. ops), and that adds stealth to the mix. It is a great weapon to use against unsuspecting enemy snipers.
