DOA4 was the chosen WCG/Pan Asia game - nothing to do with cost of game etc....

Probably because they already knew that you wouldn't bother going for a PGR event

pfft, the winner last year for PGR3 didn't even get to go, because he wasn't a perminant resident, or citizan, so TMdude, raced instead.............

as for actions speaking louder than words, look at my profile, full 1k from PGR3, plus i used to race with egor (last years winner) and he wasn't that great (dont like putting people down, unless they deserve it, hence the niceness in saying his ability).

Plus, xtramalt, they had DOA4 last year, if they are doing what your suggesting (a rotation) then wouldn't it be GOW's turn?

No-one turns up though.  Maybe if they did a Halo event they might get people but even then I doubt it.  Plus whos would sponser a team to go to the WCG?????

Re: xLAN 2007 - NZ World Cyber Games

These tournaments take considerable time and resources to run.

As I understand it the turn out at Xlan 06 was less then expected (Xbox wise), largely because of no shows who had earlier said they would be there (I had to pull out myself at short notice).  This kind of thing makes it hard for organisers and competitor's who do show and begs the question, "is anyone really interested?"

Personally, I'd like to see the full Xbox 360 line up on offer at Xlan, but how many people would actually make the effort to show up and make it worth while?

Xbox @ xLan '06 was lucklustre because there was no incentive for players to come (despite the EXCELLENT setup, and obviously the exception of the tournaments that were actually held for a couple of less-popular titles). With the strength of the online community so solid these days no-one will make the effort to gather for friendly competition anymore, there has to be money, trips overseas to represent NZ, or VERY good prizes on offer to see a large turnout of people.

I will place any bet you want that in less than 12 months time you will be seeing national Halo 3 tournaments with 100+ competitors, be it WCG, Gameon, BBS or what have you.

+ to everybody wondering why only DOA4 made it into the WCG lineup on xbox - it's basically a bone thrown to keep xbox in the WCG this year as there's no major titles worth throwing money at to enter as a WCG title. I personally thought GoW would have been worth it but obviously not. Ah well just wait til H3 ;)

It is for some people, but I'm talking in context of getting a large amount of people to turn up to an event. You're not going to pull 50 or more people to an event with a title like PGR or DOA, unless you put a crap-load of advertising into it.

Re: xLAN 2007 - NZ World Cyber Games

I was disappointed with the turnout last year, but I was also disappointed in hindsight with the lack of effort to promote or make the Xbox area something worthwhile.

First of all, there wasn't enough effort put into informing Xbox gamers what to expect and what they needed to bring. It was never clear whether or not we would be bringing (or allowed to bring) our own gear for lan play. As it happened there wasn't any room (or space allocated) for it really and that brings up the next issue...

Wall to wall demo pods with single player games and demos....precisely who is being targetted here? The hardcore players who are there for competition don't have any interest in this. Xbox owners who have all the games anyway and can play them in the comfort of their own homes have no interest in them either. So what are they for? Perhaps it is to market the 360 to the hundreds of PC gamers in the room next door who wander in on occassion? They could have been networked up for some mass games of COD2 or PGR3. At least if they are going to be used as teaser stations, put some debug units in there and show some preview code that can't be played anywhere else. Make it special.

I go to these things for the social aspect. I can play single player games at home. Its not hard to invite someone over for some 2v2 gaming also. If I'm going to go to an event and pay for the privilege, I'd like something I can't get at home and thats going to be mass lan play with multiple people. The fleeting games of Prey and PGR3 were the only exceptions.

Tournaments will clearly not be the focus if DOA4 is the sum of what is being played, so the question remains, what will there be for people to do in the (significant) time between matches?

Is the Xbox component of Xlan a tacked on distraction for PC gamers to muse over on their breaks from the mass fragathon, or is it to cater to the hardcore Xbox fraternity? If it lacks focus, it won't appeal to anyone.

Apathy amoungst the potential attendies is a big problem and its a tough one to tackle, but given the right treatment, there is no reason why it can't be succesful (the price will play a major factor in turnout too).

Unfortunately it might take a game like Halo 3 to be the real drawcard which means its looking a bit grim this year. Honestly if I was MS and the organisers, I'd say it would be easier to write this year off and make up for it next year. Hold the DOA4 tourney this year, but keep it focused around that and just target those potental people. Put Wugga back in his glass cage and get people to challenge him, maybe then he can find some suitably able challengers who are willing to come back and challenge him when they learn what is at stake. I'm sure that will more than make up the numbers.

Re: xLAN 2007 - NZ World Cyber Games
I'm interested in going but not interested in DOA4 or PC gaming.

What then would make make me go?

1. Chance to attend a reasonably sized gaming event in NZ
2. Chance to meet others in the Xbox gaming community
3. If a few are going to go from Hawkes Bay may an opportunity to meet as a group and go up together
4. Chance to catch up with some mates in Auckland

That might be enough if 3. is a viable option

What else might help -

1. August has a great release schedule with Indiana Jones, Blue Dragon, Bioshock and Mass Effect. An opportunity to play these pre-release and gaze upon their beauty
2. September is not looking so bad either
3. Forza Motor Sport and Colin Mcrae: Dirt are out by then. As these both have their fans some lan play for the petrol heads
4. A chance to meet a Xbox games developer or gamer of some renown
5. Some 360 focussed seminar presentations e.g. intergration with the home server and Vista
6. Shadowrun is out so some 360 vs PC gaming
7. Some workshops e.g. using XNA studio, how to organise your own lan party ( not everyone knows how to do this and knows what gear you need - demystify the process)
8. Game purchasing at discounted prices
9. Opportunity to buy / get for free 360 posters for my gaming room
10. A Frogger box from the  US Frogger launch and a toy pinata from the US Viva Pinata launch (I'm sure someone posted to say that Viva Pinata merchandising would start in the new year)
11. An unlock code for a gamertile for attending - makes me feel special
12. A guitar Hero II competition for all those air guitarists posting on ohw great this is - actions and entertainment value count - not just hitting the right notes
13. Clearer information and photos of the accomodation arrangements if I was to partake of this

Just some thoughts.

FYI Microsoft were responsible for advertising and complete management of the XBOX360 tournaments at xLAN 06 this year xLAN its self is running the tournaments for XBOX360.  This is to ensure a consistent quality of tournament through out the event.

If you have any requests you require please do so on the xLAN forums... since we are doing the XBOX 360 tournaments ourselves we would like input from the community but please do this on the xLAN forums.

We have had XBOX tournaments at xLAN from the start and the community hasn't shown much interest.

There is a Free trip to Singapore and also Seattle USA up for grabs this year.

Sounds like the focus will be on the competitive side and not cater much to casual play. That puts me outside of the target audience I guess. Best of luck to all.

Plus, you may have those trips up for grabs (all one prize) but pretty much everyone knows who will win, so its not really incentive to come up all the way from Dunedin.

Yip, Nol's list is pretty awesome.  The only thing i might add there is a decent 360 lan (sans halo2)

Lets do this thing, Xlan be damned, we can't piggy back on a pc event forever.

Just some thoughts.

Thanks for this dude, you're obviously a great resource for ideas, so I might be hitting you up via PM to brainstorm a bit more - I've been contacted by TMdude (xLANDeeZilla's lesser half Stick out tongue [:P]) to assist them in providing info on ways to make Xlan as worthwhile as possible for the Console brethren. As for the list, I'll attempt to tackle it:

1. This'll be up to Microsofts involvement (I've got a feeling I'm going to need to copy & paste this answer a wee bit)
2. Okay... see above.  Stick out tongue [:P]
3. Given demand, there WILL be a BYOC area for consoles at Xlan, so there's no reason the players can't set this up among themselves even if there's no support from on high.
4. I dunno, this isn't GDC, but maybe something could be arranged, but it depends on the calibur of developer you expect. I'd be inclined to doubt that Chris Butcher or something would drop everything to kick it with us for a while, but maybe some local developer might be interested - what would you want from them? Friendly chat? Gaming session?
5. I'm sure if there's any level of interest in something like this, MS would be keen to show it off...
6. I don't see why not, given the release date - though I have my own personal doubts about the Shadowrun uptake by the PC lanning community, happy to be proven wrong though.
7. Get Malt up there for this one, he has a sub and all that. Big Smile [:D] as for organising a LAN, not sure if that warrants a seminar or anything personally, just look up something like "setting up a home network", and other than the social organisation, it's done.
8. I don't think it's standard policy for retail chains and such to sponsor such events, so I can't see this happening. Will note it down and follow it up just in case though.
9. This seems reasonable, depending on availability, there's every posibility that the distros will be keen to have you advertise their games in your personal space.
10. I dunno about Frogger - shouldn't you be trying to buddy up with Pac Man for the global tournament? You're the only one on my friends list that I think is retro-crazy enough to have a shot at that. Viva Pinata toys would be a laugh and totally cool IMO, but, "This'll be up to Microsofts involvement" - I'm not sure if the merchandise is being sold overseas yet, let alone made it to our shores.
11. This'd be neat... "This'll be up to Microsofts involvement" though... I'm hoping that I'll get a chance to ambush David McLean in about a week with the burning question of more localised marketplace content...
12. Now THIS, I can guarantee you. The only reason this hasn't been announced officially yet is because I'm still writing up the outline - and yes, it WILL be performance (the theatrical kind, not the game score kind) based AND score based - currently the only thing holding me up is jimmying the procedure/rules so that we don't get 50 dudes all playing the same song (Tyepo, myself, and Muppet can all atest to this) over and over.
13. As far as accomodation goes, I'm gonna go ahead and tell you you're gonna want to probably look into your own solution for this. Lans like this often have a free option via a sleeping space, but I think if you're an adult with standards, you'll be wanting something else - backpackers, hotel, friends place, sleeping in a car, whatever...
