Re: Busted Disc Drive Club
Now my new xbox 360 cannot read discs! It says that the disc is dirty but its CLEAN no matter how many times I restart it says the same thing!
It starts the game normally then after about 10 seconds he gives me the error. My old Xbox never used to have any problems with those discs.
And NO I cannot send it back to Microsoft , because Xbox 360 will never ever be launched in my country.
PLEASE HELP!

My 360 didn't make any funny noises but now it won't read any discs. There is no error messege, it just gives me the option to open and close the tray. Is there anything I can do besides sending it in?

Today I put in Rainbow Six Vegas 2 and i hear a grinding noise. A couple of  tries later it recognizes it as DVD's. After I tried one more time it kept grinding over and over and now I  just gave up.

$94 for a dvd drive replacement? BS. I might just put one in myself.

My situation sounds very similar to yours, my jasper was working great had it now for a little over a month, then all of a sudden yesterday it started making a loud crunching/grinding noise whenever the system is powered on or the drive is shut.  Waiting on a coffin now, and hope I don't get shafted by the repair process.

I've just got a refurbed console back from MS after my last one RROD with the latest "update". The one they've sent me seems to be making a clicking noise when i turn it on and sounds like the lens is going back and forth constantly (like it's having trouble seeking the data when playing games). I was sitting at the menu on Fable 2 and it mad a loud buzzing sound as if the disc was unbalanced.  Does this sound like the normal drive problems people are getting and what's the score with the console repair if it is the drive is there some sort of warranty on the refurbished console?

I have a Elite Box that sounds like a jet engine taking off. It was making this sound for a while but would play games. Now just the jet engine but no play games. Off to Microsoft repair. I can only hope they fix it correctly. But it seems that with all of these issues, they would fix the %&$%^# things once and for all.

Re: Busted Disc Drive Club
I guess I can join this club, occasionally I would get unable to read disc a simple open/close the tray would fix that but last week it started to get real bad when it would finally read the disc about have the time it would freeze up shortly there after. A few min ago I submitted the repair form online $108 is outrageous to fix a busted dvd drive, when I do eventually get my repaired console back I may just sell it along with my hdd, wireless adapter, 12+1 month xbl gold card, and my games. Then I could spend that $ on PC games, my PC specs are:

EVGA 750i FTW mobo, C2Q Q9550 @ 3.4GHz linked/sync'd, 4GB Corsair XMS2 DDR2 800MHz, and a BFG GTX 260 OCX Maxcore

So any game I play on that will look better than it did on the ol' xbox, with the $ I get from selling my console + games/accesories I could probably justify buying a 2nd GTX 260 to run in sli. If the dvd drive goes on my PC it will only cost me ~$20 to replace it and I don't need to worry about any rrod later on.

Releasing Control Art Restriction to level 3... level 2... level 1. Situation A. The Cromwell approval is now in effect.

I just had the same problem the other day. When I bought my 360 from best buy, I got the extended warranty. I just took it back to best buy and they gave me a brand new 360.

its quite possibly a drive belt for the cd tray, they look like little rubber bands. Watch the instructional video on youtube to repair it, YOU DO NOT HAVE TO OPEN THE XBOX UP, so dont worry about your warranty. After you remove the broken belt buy a used cd drive from your local comp store for 5 bucks and cannabalize it for the part, WALLAH!!!

1- 11 mo. Faulty dvd
2- 5 mo. Faulty dvd
3- 7 mo. Faulty dvd
4- 11 mo. NXE update dvd
5- bought 1/18/09

My 3 and a half yeah old console got the RROD. So I went to best buy and got a new one. It would freeze on GTA 4 and L4D and Forza motor sport 2. returned it got another it still does it (the freezing). If I install it to the hard drive it would work fine. And on Forza if it didn't freeze I would get disk unreadable, and GTA 4 would get all low grade graphics and freeze. Not to mention that half the time my xbox won't sign me on. So I sent the xbox in waiting for it to be fixed or I hope I get an old refurbished console.

I remember when i got my 360 60gb pro back in October to replace my busted PS3, I was playing Gears of War the first night i got it and in the middle of the game it told me my brand new never opened disk was unreadable. It only did that once and i didnt have any prolems for months after that. Now its March and just 4 days ago i put in a service order to have Microsoft repair my busted *** console. Its to the point where non of my games are playable, EVEN NEW ONES!!!! Atleast im not part of the RROD club "YET"! I heard getting a serviced console back from Microsoft take almost a month. I feel like i just mailed away my child. Wish me luck on my repairs

I had the disc drive issue for several months.  It got worse as time passed and eventually the drive died.  I got three red rings and called support.  They said this was covered under free repair (this console is my RROD replacement and is out of coverage) so I sent it to them.  They have it now and I haven't heard anything to contradict the free repair quote I got!  It's a huge pain, and I actually bought a replacement drive that I can't return, but I can live with a replacement/repaired box from msoft.  We'll see.

I'm actually extremely pissed right now at MS. I had to send my console in for an E74 error repair about a month or so ago, right before they announced that all e74 repairs would be free, so paid 100 bucks for that. Get the box back, works fine for a while (of course, it aint my box) then just last week, suddenly I put a disc in, doesnt start spinning, doesnt really make any noise, just says "Open Tray" on the dashboard. Tried five times, turned it off and back on, listened. Sound like something wasn't quite on track (which is ridiculous because this thing hasn't been moved since I got it back) after a bit of fiddling, got it working, never cracked open the box, just a bit of tapping. Yesterday, got the same damn problem. I'm getting sick of this, because I swear they don't even bother to check all the problems on repaired systems, just fix whatever it was sent in with then send it out to the next unlucky S.O.B.

Luckily, they extended my warranty till 2010, so if its starts making the strange noises it was earlier today, I'm sending the goddamn thing back.

Mines started making this "whizzing" sound but it still played fine. About 2 months later, it stopped reading disc all together. I would send it in but they want $100 to get it fixed and my warranty expired 1 month before it started making the funny noises. Cant really afford to give them $100 so im a little pissed. And to charge that much is ridiculous seeing that I did nothing to make it stop reading disc in the first place.

This is becoming quite a prestigious list of fellow disc drive dancers. You all know the dance right? Open the drive, insert a disc, close the drive, pray as you listen to various whirring noises, throw up your hands in anger (and then eventually desperation) as NOTHING happens again, and then start the whole process over again thinking "This time it will work! I can feel it!" I used to be quite the Xbox spokesperson, but after these issues I have lost my voice. I would just cut my losses and walk away, but there's too much invested in various Live purchases. I guess I'll just have to call 1-800-4MYBROKEBOX, and get my BrokeBox repaired again...dancers, to your places!

Re: Busted Disc Drive Club
I was Playing R6V2 for about 3 hours the other day (on a Elite). I then closed out the game to talk to the wife for a few minutes. I then put in my G.R.A.W. 2 disc to answer an invite (game was installed onto H.D.) and it would not read. Every disc I put in after that would not read. There was no indication of pending failure. So, off to repair for my 6 month old box. Quite a shame, being I just dropped off to U.P.S the day before my Pro box for a RROD condition. B.T.W., 90% or more of my game play was off the H.D., R6V2 is in the other 10%.

I don't know if MS would acknowledge it, I mean I doubt they wanted to bring up the RRoD, and now the E74. One more problem gracing web page headlines might not be good for sales.

Re: Busted Disc Drive Club
I have had 2 consoles so far with a busted DVD rom drive. First one it was weird I was playing orange box on Half Life 2 and you know the part where the top of the citadel has a huge explosion? The drive died right there the game froze then I had a disk cannot read error. It was unable after that to read any disk with the console. So it got sent in for repair or should I say (replaced with a refurbished console) Anyway I had it for 6 months then I had again disk read errors. I go to play L4D and it would not read disk. Thinking it was dirty I took it out and it seemed a bit dirty. So I cleaned it with an alcohol wipe which means it dries without streaks put it in perfectly clean and again disk cannot read error.

Then the next day it works and then it had the issue off and on. Then the drive started getting really loud all the time. Followed by random disk read errors even during games. I had enough contacted MS and they had told me that my console was the wrong kind of broken.

They treid blaming everything but the system. They said I must have had it unlevel or I must have dropped it or I did not take care of it and other such excuses. I told them that it is broken no matter how many lights were lit up on it. Gave them an argument for days and they finnally gave in to my demands and agreed to fix it free of charge. I also told them that they should stop being cheap and provide the 3 year warranty for any hardware failure of any kind. They know there is many issues but they refuse unless it is shown that many people have it.

Such as the DVD drive thing I could see them eventually including it in the 3 year warranty if people complain about it allot. Still with aconsole with this many failed units Ms should have a 3 year warranty on the whole system. I don't see how MS has a right  to pick and chose what problems they will and wont cover in the 3 year warranty. They should be treating customers with respect because customers made them what they are. Customers are there bread and butter they seem to need to be reminded of that.

Well I stook up for myself and did not let in till they would fix the problem they had caused me by selling me faulty hardware. I think every one else should do the same. See when I contacted MS about a free repair I was not asking nicely I was just flat out demanding it. I am strong willed and will not allow someone to do me a bad turn and let them tell me how it's going to be I told them how it was going to be.

This is SPAAARKSTEALTH (insert kick down well here)

Re: Busted Disc Drive Club
GAMES TESTED ON 3 DIFFERENT 36O CONSOLES NO PROBLEMS ONLY ON MINE.
The console starts up fine no red flashing lights, just normal most games work perfect. But games such as Halo 3, Gears of War, seem to send the disc drive crazy. Initialy Halo would load up fine but when you selected the 1 player campain the game would simply freeze on the loading screen. Now it does not even load up. The main x-box screen says "disc reading" fowllowed by a loud humming noise comming from the console, this continues untill you switch the console off as the disc drive becomes unresponsive. This behavoir is the same for several of my games, most recent FIFA 09. FIFA was fine untill it started freezing right before kickoff, now it also cannot not be read by the disc drive. So I am forced to play Call of Duty 3. Customer Support Are Not Supporting Me, over the phone or online, might have to run up in the office old skool get me. Lets just see if they understood my last email.
