I tried several times to get the Tattoos and Doll but the chest didn't open, so I tried for the chicken suit and the chest opened, revealing Tats, Doll & Suit!

After much research I have found how to solve this. You must start a NEW game with a NEW character and go through the 20 minutes of **** talking until you get into the Old Town (Guild Cave) where the chest is located. Open the chest with the new character and acquire the items and save your game. Then, go back to your old character, and go into one of the shops and begin to purchase the items. This was one of the most aggervating things I have come across.

This doesn't work! I have tried it yesterday. No luck. I still don't have the Chicken Suit. Last week I also won the Hero Doll, but I haven't received that one either. If I claim my Hero doll again on xbox.com/fable2 then I get the "HARK! AN ERROR APPROACHES". Which I have allready seen many times for the Chicken Suit.

It would be nice if someone from Microsoft would fix this problem.

Well, the guy who said that it works said he played the flash game right after he got to the room with the chest.  That is the only thing that I can see making a difference in what he and I did.  I played the flash game, went to the chest...it didn't open.  I then started a new character, went to the chest and got the same crap message. But I have never played the flash game right when I got to the room or the chest.

Yeah, when I had it work (about a month ago now I guess), I was over at a friend's house, sitting at his computer playing the "Hero's Tale" while my friend who was sitting next to me was playing Fable.

@KevinStCool:

I don't know if you were referring to me, but I actually played the flash game while my friend was running around Bowerstone or something. He had me wait til he finished a few missions before he went back to the Old Tomb chest. So, for me, no, I wasn't waiting at the chest while I played the Hero's Tale. Just thought I should clarify. Unless you weren't talking about me, then never mind what I said lol.

The only thing I can suggest, although many people have tried this and not had it work, is to try using different browsers and possibly turning off cookies or something. I think when I got it to work on my friend's computer he had cookies turned off or something like that. I'm not sure if it'll work, but I had been using the Safari web browser and it never worked, and when I used my friend's computer with Firefox, I think cookies were turned off or something.

PS: If anyone plays the "Hero's Tale" and gets the error message, remember to still check the chest because I played it three times, got one Success message, and two Error messages, and I still got some items from the chest, meaning it still may have a chance of working even if you get the Error message. And it still may have a chance of not working even if you get the Success message. Stupid Lionhead...

This works! I had to start a new character, but I can purchase the chicken suit and apocalyptic pink dye in Bowerstone. I played through right up to the part where Theresa tells you to enter the Guild. I saved and quit, did the games(and didn't get the crappy "Hark" message when I claimed my prize), and after about 4 hours they were waiting for me. Two cheers for finding this info. It didn't unlock it for my old Hero, though, so I can't comment on that...

This is who I was referring to, although, when I played the flash game, I wasn't playing fable II.  Maybe that was the problem then.  Sounds like that is two people who got it to work while they were still playing Fable.

The key was starting a new save file. My old hero had already opened the chest and received the doll, hence the "Hark" message. Once I had a new file set up, it worked exactly as it should and I was given ALL the items for the three crown choices. I wasn't actually "in game" since my 360 and computer use the same TV. I saved and quit, which brought me to the opening screen. I left the 360 running and switched input to my computer and played the game. I later went back to Fable and loaded my new character-there was my reward. However, as I said, it didn't unlock it for my old hero. You will need to get a new character going-I can't stress that enough!Smile [:)] Just sucks because I had some serious time invested in my old hero....

I did that.  It failed.  Unless I need to have the XBOX on while I play the flash game.

Surprise [:O] Well that sucks. Did you get the "Hark" message or did it let you claim the items and then not give them up in game? Like you said, try it with your 360 on-maybe your Live account needs to be online for it to work.Wink [;)]

That is how I did it, when it said go to fable2.com I stayed put in the game, went to the website and played through all three crowns. I then exited my browser and turned back to my xbox and opened the chest, I got all 5 items

So in that recent "debut" of Fable 3, the one where they announced a release "window" of holiday 2010, they also talked about how they are releasing Fable 2 through downloadable episodes, with the first one being a free download.

Sooo... With this "spark" Microsoft and Lionhead is providing for Fable 2, do you think there will be an increased attention on the fixing of the "Hero's Tale" game?

Especially since the first (free) episode will probably contain the Old Tomb (and the Old Tomb chest) right at the end.

That's a good point.  People are going to get to the chest, play the flash game, and see that it doesn't work, then they will figure all of Fable II is just as broken and no one will buy the rest of the episodes.

Or the chest won't exist at all in the game and Lionhead would be able to avoid the situation completely.

Yeah, they could do that, but all in all, I think that taking the chest out might require more work than just fixing the game. Well, it might require more work. It seems to me that chances are (sadly) that Lionhead will take the easy way out because they're all busy playing with Milo and Project Natal. Oh, and they're making some more glitchy, low-quality Fable games to pay bills. Sorry, but I'm just perpetually upset with Lionhead, not to mention I've never liked Peter Molyneux.

Hmmmm. I had no trouble with this. Worked for me the first time.... of course I did a clear cache first, then a system format, then recovered my account, and made my Hero, and once I reached the end of the Guild Hall, my dog barked, and the chest opened, and I acquired everything from the 3 Crowns & Chicken Kicking game from the site. I think maybe some are having trouble with it, not because it might require you to start a new game, but maybe you need to get it before you warp out of the Guild Hall, but thats just my opinion, as I've I've played games that would do stuff like that (get it now or never get it at all later....)

Nah, it shouldn't have anything to do with leaving the Guild Hall.  When I first got Fable 2, I stayed inside the Guild Hall and didn't play for nearly a week because I was waiting for my items to show up.

Re: Please keep all Old Tomb chest discussion HERE
Yeah, the very first time I got the items in the chest, way back in December before all this not-working crap, I played quite awhile before I went back to the Old Tomb and played the Hero's Tale. Unfortunately, that Hero's save file mysteriously got corrupted around the time everyone started experiencing Old Tomb chest problems...

I personally believe it has something to do either with the internet side of it, or else the website side of it. I never tried to make a new Hero, but I just can't see how that would make the chest work correctly. I really hope Microsoft and Lionhead fix this once and for all when they start releasing the "Game Episodes" of Fable 2.

Edit: And I think, if I remember correctly, that Shadowzraider said she had contacted Lionhead and Lionhead said that since the Hero's Tale game was hosted on a Microsoft webpage, that it was up to Microsoft as to fix or leave the problem alone. So, my point being that for those who are saying "well, Lionhead announced Fable 3 so they're not going to fix it", you're wrong, because the maintenance of the Hero's Tale is Microsoft's responsibility, not Lionhead's.

Right.  We all want to blame Lionhead and take it out on the by not buying their games or whatever, but the Hero's Tale is hosted on Microsoft's site, which means Microsoft is in control of it.  Of course, a lot of people have said that removing updates/patches makes the prizes work.  So, I don't know...either way, it'd be nice if they'd stop messing around and just get this working for everyone.

Hey, I'm back! Sorry, my computer broke and I haven't been able to update u guys on what i've heard.

This is what the guy from Microsoft suggested I should do but have not been able to try for myself yet because I've been computer-less and drowned in work:

  • Make a silver account on your Xbox
  • Play flash games using that silver account
  • Claim prizes on that silver account
  • Make a hero on Fable 2 on the silver account
  • Open chest using silver account hero
  • (Hopefully) get items on silver account hero
  • Go back to ur original goldy account
  • Check chest / check stores / make a new hero and check again.
Didn't make sense to me why that would work but oh well. Please try it and let me know if this works, I haven't had a second to even look at my Xbox. If it doesn't work, lemme know and I'll (or maybe u guys as well) will contact Microsoft again again again again (I lost count...) again x1000000. Patience, persistence, and teamwork will get this fixed.

I HATEZ teh Glitchez.

Hmm... That sounds a little familiar...

...And if this would somehow be the reason, perhaps you would be able to create a new XBL account, play the Hero's Tale, then start a character, get the items, trade them to a friend, then have them give the items to your main XBL account. That was my idea with the silver accounts I used, but it would not work with those accounts.

Maybe the Microsoft Support employees are surfing these forums for their answers as well...

Kudos for the persistence though. This method may work for some people. I never knew that if you get the items on one hero, it will make them available in shops on other heroes. I still kinda think the glitch has something to do with when the account/save file was made, but it's just a hunch. I will probably call Microsoft sometime soon, as I need to send in my 360 for repairs anyway.

Y'know, I'm really not too excited about Fable 3 anymore...

What I found worked was that I was signed in to xbox live and played the slideshow game through once. I then started up Fable 2 and accessed the chest and was awarded the prize for the first crown. I then saved and exited Fable 2 back to the My Xbox homepage and proceeded to play the slideshow through twice more... repeating the above step for each crown. This was all done the first time I entered the cave and it has worked for me.

What I did, and it worked fine for me, was go play the game after first encountering the chest. It said to go to the website to learn how to open the chest.
