Playing DivX movies without having to Re-encode, through media centre

Playing Divx on media center –

Download Windows Media Encoder 9  from here and then Install.

Put your divx video in “My Videos”  and then open up notepad, in the document write  mms://*INSERT PC IP ADDRESS*:8080 and then save your notepad file as *name of video*.asx

screen shot of what your notepad document should look like. (note ip address replaced with X's)

**for example if your video is called perfectdarktrailer.avi the notepad file would be saved as perfectdarktrailer.asx**

save the file to the directory  of the video your wanting to watch.

 Open up Windows Media Encoder

In the wizard dialogue popup box click “Custom Session” screen shot

In the sources tab change  “Source From” to File and then browse and open up the video you want. screen shot

Use the other tabs to change the quality of the output. In this case we have set it as “DVD quality video” screen shot

When you’re happy with your settings click “apply” and then start encoding.

Open up media center on your 360 and locate the .asx file  and play it, you should now be able to watch it on your xbox 360 J

also just another little note that i discovered earlier today; as the movie is been broadcast over your network (much like internet radio) you will need to start the .asx file on the 360 at pritty much the same time you press 'start encoding' on windows media encoder because it will just skip to whereever the encoder is on the file, you also won't be able to pause for long either or it will skip forward aswell.

can be slightly annoying but its better than no DivX movies.

Now, I'm all in favour of making DivX work, and ugly fixes for ugly problems, but this seems a little too 'hackish' to really bother, at the moment ["Click Encode and play near the same time!"].  Kudos on putting something together though, you crazy Germans!

How Much time do you get between the time you click encode to the time you have to select the file on the 360? My MCE PC is in the office and My 360 in the living room . I am going to give this a go tonight thou. I will be nice if it works as I encoded a movie with the Latest Divx 6.1 in the Hi Def profile and it looks awesome and is only 1 GB. Much better than a 5 gig Mpeg 2 file. It would be nice to buy a 250 gig drive for $70 and get close to 200 movies on it.

doesn't matter at all when you play the file and start the broadcast. though if you want to watch your movie right from the beginning it is probably alot better playing the .asx file quite quickly after you start the broadcast, rather than having say a 5 minute gap between starting each thing.

Thanks for the info.

This thread is nonsense.  It's basically saying that if you install XVid codecs on your pc you'll be able to play them using WMC.  i.e. - Whatever you can watch on your pc you can watch on your 360 - WRONG!  Anyway, I'll give the method in this thread a bash.  Sounds promising.

I tried this. I put the *filename.asx* file in the same directory as the filename.avi file. MCE could find the .avi, and it gave the usual "Cannot play this cause the codec is not supported or the file is corrupt" message. Does it have to be placed in the my videos folder? I don't have enough space there.

no idea on whether it has to be place in my videos, however you DON'T play the .avi file, you play the .asx file.

Good info..  Waaay too much work.. I will use the FFDSHOW method instead..  none of this having to click on the PC and then run to your xbox stuff. and having to have a bunch of .asx files all over the place..  And whoever said this is the only method to play DiVX your wrong, you just have to check out the various forums that exist.

Could you provide some info on the FFDSHOW method? Maybe a link to another forum? I tried googling for it but couldn't find anything.

The method discussed here seems to work very well. But I'd like to see what else is available.

care to share any links of these forums.

personally, the idea of streaming DIVX is a nice idea, but the above process is was to time consuming, plus i wish there was way/program the would automatic begin the encode/stream once a connection was detected to a specified port.

Will this work for mp4's on a network shared drive, still using wmc 2005?

Re: Playing DivX movies without having to Re-encode, through media centre

I ran across the link before I had my 360 and was on a german language site.   I'm trying to find the link but can't find it..  It required some upfront work with creating some files with the MS dev toolkit and it would "trick" the 360 into streaming it.  Sorry for getting your hopes up!  But might as well call BS since I can't produce the article..  There is a lot of interest in getting the 360 to stream XViD so something is going to come along that is easier..

or MS will just give in and give us a codec!!!  PLEASE  Crying [:'(]

Re: Playing DivX movies without having to Re-encode, through media centre

Major Nelson has said that they won't but I'm hoping that they will.

For now, the technique discussed here is the only known/verifiable way to stream divx.

One additional note that I wanted to make is that I tried this technique but on the output I also set it to save the encoded movie. I was able to use the XBox to watch the movie via the saved file while the encode was still happening. That way, it always started playing from the beginning. I couldn't fast forward but I could pause. I assume that this would also work if I wasn't broadcasting the encode process over the network. Just a slight tweak to the instructions. The obvious drawback is that it will write to the hard drive and there might not always be enough space.
