How I got from Moderate NAT to Open NAT on my Linksys WRT54G
I hope this helps someone save the 2.5 hours it took me to get Open NAT on my WRT54G.

- Assigned my Xbox360 a static IP (192.168.9.2 in my case).
- Went to the Port Forwarding (Applications & Gaming > Port Forwarding)
- Created 2 forwards:
Name      Port Range      Protocol        IP
xbl1         88-88              UDP             192.168.9.2
xbl2         3074-3074      Both              192.168.9.2

Obviously, use the correct IP for your 360.
- Download and install the latest firmware from (Released 03/2007):
http://www.linksys.com/servlet/Satellite?c=L_Download_C2&childpagename=US%2FLayout&cid=1115417109974&packedargs=sku%3D1149562300349&pagename=Linksys%2FCommon%2FVisitorWrapper&lid=0997400349B03

I also have my Xbox DMZ'd, but I don't think that's required, and I'll probably change it later.

Re: How I got from Moderate NAT to Open NAT on my Linksys WRT54G
I have a few questions, and I'm pretty new at this, but I'm also trying to do the same thing.

1) is there any particular reason you created two forwards?  would I be ok setting mine up the same as yours?
2) how do i install firmware on a router? or is this something that you install on your pc? and if so how does that affect the xbox?

thanks

I have no idea why Skreet went through all that mess. On the WRT54G all you need is to enable UPnp and your NAT should be OPEN.   You should not have to mess with ports and DMZs and stuff.

To install firmware, you use your PC to browse to the manufacturer's web site (www.linksys.com) and search for your router model and hardware version.  Find the correct firmware and download it to your PC.   Then you use your PC's browser to connect to your router's admin pages and find the firmware upgrade section.   Point it at the file you saved on your PC and click the "upgrade"   button.   You "MUST" have your PC connected to your router via an ethernet cable when you do this.

I never tried the UPnP method, but that's a good idea.

Yep, one advantage of UPnp is that it works with mulitiple xboxes on one router.   While Port forwrading or DMZ is limited to one xbox per router.   With UPnp if you have a friend bring his xbox over and you want  to hook both of them up to your router,  they will both work with an OPEN NAT.   If you use Ports or DMZ, only one of them will work.

Do a "Factory" reset on your router first, then enable UPnp.   (If you have the WRT54G)

If you still do not have an open NAT then check your firmware.

If you still do not have an open NAT,   check the device your router is connected to.   "Piggyback" routers will have an issue (one router plugged into another router).     Be careful.   some people think their router is plugged into a "modem"  when it is actually a "Gateway".    A Gateway is a form of router.

Just because you enable UPnP, it is no guarantee it will open your NAT... It all comes down to the routers UPnP implementation.

You can check the MS approved list for best results, but other devices can still work even if they are not on the list.

PS. I too have the WRTG54G, and UPnP did the trick for me...

Note: Prior to doing a factory reset, you might want to SAVE you current configuration, if you router supports this feature.

On the WRTG54G, it's on the Admin / Config Management menu.

I'll have to look into how upnp works, I don't understand how you can have two Xboxes on one network unless the xbox live network uses different return ports for both devices... - Skreet

I've enabled UPnP, but my NAT is still moderate.

Anything else I need to do? It's starting to get annoying because I feel like I'm getting the NAT error every time I try to join someone else's host. I have the WRT45G.

Thanks.

I assume you mean WRT54G, right?

What version is your WRT54G? Enabling UPnP did the trick for me and my WRT54G (v8.00.2). If you are not the same version, might want to consider a firmware upgrade...

There is also this trick:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/908874?sd=xbox (basically same info as the first post)

(forward those ports to your 360's IP)

Re: How I got from Moderate NAT to Open NAT on my Linksys WRT54G
Stick with UPnP. Almost all linksys routers support it and the WRT series is one. It had issues with some of getting it to work but that was patched by a firmware update. If UPnP does not fix the issue update to the newest firmware and try it again. Port fowarding and DMZ's are a last resort if your router doesn't support UPnP.

Re: How I got from Moderate NAT to Open NAT on my Linksys WRT54G

Ok Well i have a trendnet TEW-452BRP... (Yes i know its not very good) But yea i currently have 2 computers running off it and when i try to plug my xbox 360 in to connect to live (Via Ethernet cable) It will disconnect the internet and wont connect to live (It sometimes connects for a few minutes but then disconnects again) But my main issue is that the only way that my live is working is when i connect it directly into the back of the main modem (Which i then cannot have the 2 computers using the internet).

Does anyone know what i could do?

Re: How I got from Moderate NAT to Open NAT on my Linksys WRT54G
Click the Security link near the top of the page
Remove the checkmark from the Block Anonymous Internet Requests checkbox. Click the Save Settings button near the bottom of the page.

Thats all I had to ever done, I didn't forward any ports, or setup any static IP which is always dinamic, also never turned DMZ for console... everything worked fine since I bought this cheap-o router. Model WRT54G v.6 with 1.02.1 firmware.

Do not rely on UPnP.  Sometimes it works, somtimes it doesn't.  My linksys only added half the forwarding required.  Once I properly set it up myself, NAT was open.

Good point... And was the point I was trying to make... If one method does not work, try another... As a last resort, the port forwarding should work, but if it does not, a new router may be required.

You must have had the older firmware. The linksys had a known issue with UPnP. Updating to the most recent version fixes the issues with UPnP.

Thank you, de menace!

THANK YOU!!!  Thank you, de menace.   Thank you a million times over!  The Linksys manual, support site, and help menu on the setup disc all failed me.  I searched for NAT in all three places.  The only thing I found was a glossary entry telling me what it was, not how to change it.  I have a version 2.0 wrt54g, and the firmware had not been upgraded ever.  The router was bought after Halo 2 came out so my brother and I could play together.  (a couple months later he got WOW, so that didn't last too long)

Thank you again.  This solved my problems that I've been having.  Thank you also to the person that posted the routers address as http://192.168.1.1.  I would have had to search for a while before finding that.  Now I can play with everyone!
