So is this game 'free roaming' like Microsoft's Freelancer on PC?
Comments from anyone who has played both titles please.

No it's not, different style of game. This is more like Descent Freespace, Tie Fighter, X Wing, Wing Commander etc.

It's a cross between After Burner and Wing Commander. It's not an on-rails shooter. It's more mission based. But you do have an enourmous battlefield.

Yeah more mission/objective based. If it was completely free roaming Im sure they would have made it a mercenary story type game... but for some reason i get the feeling the story is somewhat similar to that of (Gundam Seed?) Looks like two friends face off that once flew together for the same side.

Nah the original 1984 release of 'Elite' was the best space sim ever. Those wireframe, vector graphics were cutting edge, lol. I remember playing classic Elite on a BBC model B microcomputer. I think that the game came on a floppy disk, lol.

Freelancer is my favourite PC game EVER!!! It's ranked up there above Half Life and Planescape, I absolutely adore that game.

I remember that! 5 1/4in floppy and old vector graphics.  I loved elite 2:Frontier as well, but as I played it on an Amiga CD32, there storage space on the *cough* console was atrocious and you had to play for 12 hours at a time THEN save it!

Yeah, I thought of Gundam Seed the instant I started playing this game. The friend/enemy relationship, massive superweapon, final defense of Earth, etc. Doesn't mean that it's a bad thing though. I mean, I liked GS's storyline, so that just carried over to this game for me.

Did you ever try out any of the mods for Freelancer?  There was one that added ships from ALL of the major Sci-Fi shows and had new zones for the capital ships with large scale battles.  It was easy to find until they got busted for copyright and then you could only find it on eMule. I cannot remember what it was called but I have a copy somewhere archived.

I have never played Freelancer.  I can tell you that the game is pretty much like a modern version of Wing Commander.
