Re: Long Live COD3 - COD4 on-line play Boring
Call of Duty 3 actually feels like your playing a part in a battle. The kits make sure that you feel like the side you are playing on (using the appropriate weapons for the allies and axis) and I love how you fight to take the enemies spawn which is almost like their HQ, then the spawn moves and the fighting is taken to the other parts of the battlefield. The maps are large enough that run-and-gun wont work and all of the dynamics like vehicles and the in-battle rank system make the fighting so intense and war-movie like. I love this game and encourage all of your friends to put down WaW and Cod4 and play the Cod3!

Run and gun does work with automatics.
Not so well with other guns.
But yea one feature that makes COD3 awesome is how you don't deal damage to someone who's just spawned it prevents major spawn killing.

Are you serious?!  Every time I'm online on CoD3, there's never any choice.  It's always CTF at Eder Dam or Team Battle at Poission.  There's the odd game mode on Merville but that's it.  I can't remember the last time I played HQ on any map and I've never played Single CTF.  I don't think I've played Verdun either.

That's my only gripe with CoD3.  It's always the same stuff.

Although that's nothing compared to my grievances on CoD4.  I think online CoD4 would be so much better without those stupid perks.  Everyone bangs on about how the M16 is a n00b gun.  It's a semi-auto.  They probably think it's a n00b gun because they can't use it and prefer to pump half a mag into a target with the M4 or AK47.

In CoD3 Player matches you have the choice to pick whatever map/gametype you want. Its not as if you have to worry about being the 'host' in the CoD4 sense. That is choice.

The best way to search is by the maps.  If you pick your map and have game type as any, it will give you all games on the selected map.  Selecting by game type or any will not list all of the games.  I do not know why.  So, it is better to select via the maps.  Go through each map and you will find more games.

World at War feels much more like COD3 then 4 did, which is a good thing. However, I really wish it'd go back to the old style of gameplay...

it looks like their is only 2 to 3 of you that are still playing cod 3.  Look i can understand staying with 3 when cod 4 came out, its a totally different game.  but cod waw is 3s sequel.  So its time for u guys to move on yeah their are perks and things to work for.  But theirs alot more things to do online and the story mode is good.  And it still has the treyarch feel to it.  So if u havent already go out and buy it already.  I see someone said that they like cod 3 because when you are german u use german weapons and so on.  But im big into military history and in ww2 it was very common for lets say a german soldier to pick up a russian weapon and use it .  And it was very common for americans to use german weapons.  yeah i still have cod 3 but i will rarely play the game.  Im not the kind of person that sells my games i keep them, especially if its a classic.

Please, WaW is not the sequel of CoD3, its CoD4 in a new skin. As for picking up enemy weapons...was there many Type 100's lying around Berlin then? Thought not. And there are still plenty of people playing this game, in fact members of a forum I belong to are having a CoD3 evening tonight...and its a double XP weekend in WaW too...that says so much to me.

why should people move on to a new game, when they love to play a game they like and enjoy playing? just because its an older game, doesn't mean people should go to the next game...and i agree with neillydun on his statement

Thank you!

DOTxKIllMachine, while it is true that each side wouldn't stick to their usual weapons and they would pick up an enemy gun, last I checked, the Germans didn't use the Japanese guns (since, you know, they were on different parts of the world).

The one bad part about WaW is how unrealistic it was. COD3 actually had slight realism to it...

You can pick up enemy weapons in COD3.

Besides I'd think American ally's at the time had plenty of ammunition.... Don't see why any soldier would go with an MP40 just because it was on the ground when they have a M1 Garand.

No.  Much more than 2 or 3 people every time I check .

I do play WaW a lot but I always go back to 3 and I still like 3 online more than any others so far, going back to COD and UO on PC.

Well said. What DotTxKillMachine does not understand is why people prefer COD3 and COD2 to COD4 and CODWaW.  I'll try to explain it.
Reason 1) COD3 and COD2 used peer to peer connection in which every player must be able to connect to each other. COD4 and CODWaW use a host connection where players must only match to the host.  This is what made for the horrible on-line play.  You know like invisible players and claymore.  You would walk in a room clear all corners then bang you are shot in the back by a player in the corner you just checked.  Then you would watch the kill cam and you would see the other play watching you from one of the corners you just cleared (note that player is invisible to you because your connection and his do not match up, so he has not downloaded to your X-box yet, but you are there on his) Bang your dead.  This just one example of the invisible lag, there are plenty more.  They tried to fix it, but could not because well you would have to scrap the whole program and start over.
I still played it, but not anymore - the lag is so bad it is impossible to play.

Reason 2) the perks, guns and maps foster run-n-gun games with no team work.  Even with the horrible lag it was easy to get kills, keep moving and spray.  Now sniping was tricky because you had to aim at a random point where you tink the player may actually be.  COD3 had kits which you had to play differently and rely on teamwork and strategy - it was a much harder game to master.  COD4 was a walk in the park compared to COD3; the same went for the single player campaing.

Reason 3) Modern weapons verses WWII weapons, some people did not like the change over.  I didn't mind, in fact I like both types.

Now I know you are going to say it's because I sucked at COD4, which tells me you never played against me.  I prestiged once and vowed never to do it again because it was just more of the same boring game, so insted I concentrated on getting gold weapons - that keep me interested in the game, but then it got boring again with nothing else to accomplish.  COD3 is still not boring and still takes talent to win.  I'm not saying that there are not problems with COD3, I am saying that it is just a more interesting and fun game to play.  It seems like CODWaW is not doing that well when I look at my friends list - everyone is playing COD4, COD3 or other games.  Very few are playing CODWaW yet they all bought the game.  As you all know, I cancelled my CODWaW pre-order based on the Beta - I did not want to play COD4 with old weapons and horrible connections.

I may just be the last thing you see before you re-spawn!

Just a small point of order, CoD2 also uses a client/server model, or as you put it, a host connection. You can see this just by looking at the ping times...there will always be one player sitting on zero...the host. This would not be the case in a P2P model.

That is one of the best things about CoD3.
And the game doesnt quit when someone leaves.

I still cant believe they had the "host connection" method in WaW, didnt they realise it sucked enough it CoD4.

that, and the 30 min, hour long matches that took place.  OMG those were just epic, and if the host left no big deal, everyone just kept playing.  Also the ability to switch teams midway.  If the other team needed 1 or 2 more players, and it was say a 10 on 12, two people could change.  Or they could change if they were getting sick of playing as the Americans for 30 min to play as the Germans.  God I miss this game, I'd play it but my xbox is screwed up

Although you say W@W is 3's sequel the game is identical to CoD4.

Unfortunately we won't be seeing another simple yet fantastic online FPS like CoD3 considering IW has taken over. There's no way they will drop their perks system or any other features that have made their more recent CoDs so successful.

I'm playing L4D at the moment. It's the best online FPS I have played since CoD3. Simple yet great, proof that you don't need a vast array of customisation options that affect gameplay to make a great online FPS.

I think you may be correct.  I think that COD3 went peer to peer to allow for large games fill with more players.

Just goes to show that COD4 & CODWaW are poorly programmed for the online game.

But if you can, please explain to me why in COD4 if you were host, you were screwed.  It was better to quit and play another round as non-host.  I have noticed this and I have a buddy with a FiOs connection just for his xbox; he also noticed that being host would just suck up his mega-connection.

Re: Long Live COD3 - COD4 on-line play Boring

I just left the following message on the Activision contact page.

COD3 was the best online experience ever.  The change to COD4 was awful due to player connection issues and now CODWaW is the same.  Droves of people are back to playing COD3 and are requesting new maps.  Are new Maps for COD3 a possiblity?
Look up my gamer tag, "shihandojack" in the xbox 360 forums.  You will see that there is a market for new COD3 maps.

If not, maybe the next COD game can be a peer-peer connection base on the COD3 game, but with modern weapons.  Dump the COD4 platform.

If you want to enjoy your on-line play again, everyone in this forum should leave Activision a similar e-mail.

At a guess, I would say the game intoduces a range of latency compensators to try and even up the ping times. That's why matchmaking becomes critical. If ping times were spread in a small enough band, then probably its a good thing to be host.

I read this research paper on how you can take advantage of these problems. Although its looking at older games, I'm pretty sure that netcode hasnt developed that much in recent years and the same basic techniques are still being used.

Its a big problem with serverside hit detection. Frustration arises for a user because what he is 'seeing' isnt exactly what the server is judging the situation on. I also don't understand why they cant make clientside detection for consoles...they arent as likely to be hacked as a PC is.
