My first 360 threw a RROD about a year ago.  My new 360 is now having disc drive problems.  It worked fine a couple days ago.  Now the disc drive won't read anything.  Luckily I've got the extended warranty from my retailer so I am going to take it back to them, get a new one, and let them deal with Microsoft.

P.S.  This system is less than a year old.

Re: Busted Disc Drive Club
Add me to the list. My Xbox's center green light started blinking constantly, the way it does when the drive tray is opening. The drive will not open and the green light just keeps flashing.

So far I have found four threads on the net relating to XBOX dvd drive problems and a boatload of You tube videos. Heck there is an industry springing up of people offering to repair them. I'm really shocked at how many people are affected by this. My unit is out of warranty and Like a lot of you I can't afford ($100 or more) to pay Microsoft to fix a product that should not be crapping out like this.

Local video game dealers tell me they won't sell 360s any longer and they are giving up selling games for them too.

NewEgg is selling refurb units and people are flaming them since the refurbed units are dying right away.

What is Microsoft thinking? If they had a lick of sense they would offer to fix all of these problems for free, because if they don't, they are going to lose every last customer they have. I am so angry I could spit.

Quite a few posts I have read say they will never buy Microsoft again. I say, If Microsoft makes it right, then give them a break.

The ball is in your court Microsoft. Be smart. Make this right. I can't play any of my games, nor will I purchase any more until this is fixed at YOUR EXPENSE.

My console is crazy because some game discs i can play but sounds and voices are out of the game and for the rest of the game discs the console can't even read. so I tried to play the games that the console can read and now they are starting to have the unread message also, but what confuses me is that i have a game disc that is non scratched and the console can't read it. tried playing the game disc a few times but nothing happened.

I need help what should I do

Here is my lovely story:

Starts with my friends Xbox. Played it a lot for over a year and a half. Got it when the system came out. All of a sudden i get the "Open Tray"/"Please put this disc into an Xbox 360 console" crap! That's the first one right!

Secondly, My cousins xbox did the EXACT same thing.

Third, My Brothers EXACTLY THE SAME!

And last but not least. MINE... can you guess?? you know don't you EXACT SAME PROBLEM!

is it just me or am i starting to see a trend here?? mine was even used! it was made in the year 2007. my cousins 2006, brothers 2007. friends 2005...

I have came to the conclusion that the disc drives in these Xboxs are faulty! I also read that 2 drives that came with the xbox does this problem everytime. I say they should fix our systems for free for putting FAULTY HARDWARE IN THE SYSTEM!!!

This is ridiculous and i may even sell my games and move on the ps3... i even called xbox about this problem, they told me sorry sir you're warranty is up! please pay me 120 to conduct you through the repairs over the phone! big rip off!!! BOYCOTTT!

EDIT: These problems have been happening for quite a while.... i just never bothered with it til' now... I WANT TO PLAY COD!!! god do i hate this company...

Re: Busted Disc Drive Club

I’ve had my elite 3 years now, never had 1 problem until today.  Played probably 3 hours of Horde last night, went to play the next day and the drive will not read “any” disk that I put into it. The disks do not even spin when the drive closes. I’m sure I’m screwed because it is out of warrantee, so the question is pay to have it fixed or just buy a new one so I can start over with a new warrantee.

My problem is like many others.  Faulty disc drive.... It always stays open.  I put a game in it closes and a second later it opens.  Turn the 360 off it will shut then open.  Now they want me to pay 100 bucks to fix it.  A new console cost $180.  I don't know what to do.  This 360 is turning into a money pit.

Anyone Know How To Maybe Fix This?

Like I Said, It Just Started Happening After The Updates 2 Days Ago.

A Lot Of People Are Now Having This Same Problem.

add me to this list. This would be my 5th xbox 360 now! 3 RROD, 1 battery problem, and then disc tray problem. Before I take this one back to bestbuy do you think theyll let me keep the HDD and swap it with the new xbox? I have so many things saved like extra characters that I dont want to have to unlock all over again and it will take me days to download all the vids and saved data I have on there.

Re: Busted Disc Drive Club
This is the ghetto solution to the close tray..reading...open tray problem.

Ok here is the quick fix but you have to do it every time you load a disk.

insert disk, close tray, as it is reading knock on the top of the xbox towards the hard drive side... a little more to the back...do it til it says disk playing ...disk will then play.

I promise it works. at least you will be able to play a game.

If you don't believe me that it works go to you tube and watch the videos. Thats how I got mine to work after 3 days of frustration.

Hopes this helps, I like to call this method the "Whacking the Xbox Off"

That does not surprise me to date I have not had a console even a year old.

PS that is 6 that have lived less then a year and the 7th is not looking like it's going to last too much longer and that one is only 2 months old.

Forgot to mention I am posting in here since some have had DVD drive issues and this one appears to be having issues it is making more noise and the last console that made that noise stopped working in a month. So chances are in a month this console will not read disks or be slow to read them. Not to mention the fans in it are dieing which that is a new one.

Re: Busted Disc Drive Club
i have had 5 consoles break total...

#1: got it on launch day after camping outside target in the cold november rain... it lasted the longest, nearly 2 years until it finally stop reading disc and just said 'open tray'

#2: only lasted a few months... also got open tray error

#3: see #2 cuz it was exactly the same problem and timescale... also the first three were all brand new, i had a gamestop (then eb games) warranty so no XBOX repair service

#4: i guess gamestop got tired of replacing them cause they told me to call 1-800-4MYXBOX, and they replaced this one for free (it was under 1yr warranty cause gamestop was giving me brand new ones).. btw this one was also a 'open tray' error

and finally #5: this is the one i got now which.. surprise, started giving me 'open tray' error 10 days after 1yr warranty expired.

and this brings me to my point... very many people are expierencing the exact same problems as me yet MS refuses to include the 'open tray' error under its 3yr warranty... if you don't believe me google 'open tray error' and just look at the thousands of people looking for fixes and things for this problem spefically. the truth is i think this problem is way more widespread then RRoD or E74 or whatever (at least it is now, i know RRoD was goin crazy for awhile but it's calmed down) so they need to include this. i only know 7 people in person that have 360's and of those 7, 4 have had 'open tray' error. that's not including how many people off of my 78 person friend's list that have the same problem... if you have had or have the same problem then we gotta speak out man, this is BS. i know MS knows this is a big problem and they need to do something about it... i've already invested ALOT of money in 360, games, acces., etc. and $99 just for them to send me another console that will surely get the same problem in a few months is robbery.. i know they check these forums (or at least i hope they do) so lets get something done..

PS: my ps3 literally is used for nothing but BLURAY movies and MLB: the show. i've had it since launch day and not had one single problem with it. i do use the 360 way more but the ps3 just collects dust and keeps on kicking... why can't xbox?

Dear Microsoft,

if you're trying to LOSE business and money...keep making unreliable products

My PS3 hasn't failed me yet...

I have stronger faith in sony and apple products... i haven't had to buy 3 PS3's... just one

Brand new 360 and already having disc drive problems... f'n pathetic

having "disc unreadable" prompts for fifa 09/10, COD4, rock band, fallout...

this is gonna be my last xbox... 3 systems was enough
...

why complain... it's not like this company cares about the customer

Re: Busted Disc Drive Club
it's a very easy explanation...

PS3 = Sony Product
Xbox 360 = Microsoft Product

Oxymoron: A rhetorical figure in which incongruous or contradictory terms are combined.
Example: Xbox Customer Service

Weird my drive on my last failed console died after I played Brutal Legend. Weird thing for me is right now it works for any other game but that one. Of course I know that basically means my console is on it's last legs. Why can't disk failure be added to the 3 year warranty thing?

add me also to the list.

when i  insert a disk it will say reading and then go back to "open tray".  thats for 80% of my games.  the other 20% will read and then ill get 2 minutes into a game until a given point where it will say the "disk is unreadable" and then transport me back to the dashboard.

i dont fall under warranty anymore, and their extended warrenty only covers E74 and the RROD.   wtf, how are they making ME pay $100 to repair THEIR ****ed up hardware.  i dont have random cash laying around to throw at MS for a repair every year. (i had RROD last year)

and they want to give me a month of xbox live for compensation the retarded nonenglish speaking lady at 8004myxbox says to me.  WHAT IN THE WORLD KIND OF COMPENSATION IS THAT FOR YOUR CUSTOMERS.  I DONT WANT A  MONTH OF XBOXLIVE FOR FREE.....  I WANT MY SYSTEM TO PLAY DISKS LIKE IT SHOULD BECAUSE THAT IS WHAT I PAID FOR IN THE FIRST PLACE.  Give me what a paid for and forget your xbox live **** that only covers a fifth of the repair cost you want to charge me anyway you worthless bumblef***s!!  MAN UP XBOX/MICROSOFT.  MAN UP!

Re: Busted Disc Drive Club
My disc drive has a very hard time reading discs. The only way to get it to read them is to bang on the top of the console for several minutes. It is out of warantee and I can't afford to get it repaired. It replaced another broken console and I believe is less than 2 years old or thereabouts.

Also I have a secondary problem with it. It is hard to open the tray if there is no disc in it and requires repeated attempts.
I'm playing ASSASSINS CREED 2, DJ HERO, and Karaoke Revolution for the PS3. Winners make their own luck.
