Dig Dug - Arcade's Best Kept Secret?

I enjoy playing mostly Arcade games on my XBOX 360.  Sure, I have many standard games, but I'd be lying if I said Gears of War or Oblivion were my favorites.  I spend most of my time on XBOX-Live Arcade, period.  Having said that, I also know there's many other gamers out there who share my same views.  Just from trolling these message boards alone, you can see several hundred of even thousands of posts for games such as Castlevania, Doom, Texas Hold 'em, MK3, Uno and my favorite, Street Fighter.

Where's Dig Dug?  No one's really talking about this hero of the underworld (literally!).  Is that a good thing, or bad thing?  Do us Dig Dug fans want this game to be in the spotlight, or do we simply enjoy this game the way it is; which is a diamond in the rough.  I believe Dig Dug is Arcade's best kept secret.  In a way, I'd like for it to remain that way, but I believe in the end I'd rather see many more gamers enjoy this game just as I did.

I had never played this game before until about a month ago.  I downloaded the demo, and wasn't every enthralled initially.  As I was going through trial Arcade games, I was deleting games I did not want and buying the games I wanted to unlock.  I was teetering on Dig Dug.  Finally, I said what the ***, and made the brilliant decision of making it mine!

Now that I've unlocked all the Achievements (the Dig Achievement was a bit*h!) and became a proud member of the 200/200 club, I want to promote this game to everyone I know, simply because I believe it's one of the most underrated gaming experiences on Arcade, if not the 360 all together.  Even after you've captured all the Achievements, it's not over!  There's what, 200 and some levels?  ***, I'm only on level 25!

I guess what I'm trying to say is, don't let Dig Dug die.  I believe this game doesn't receive any attention simply because people don't know how great this game really is.  If you believe other gamers with similar tastes in games would enjoy Dig Dug, turn them on to it.  That's what I'm doing at the moment.

Well said, and great writing skills. Are you going to be a journalist in the future by any chance? For sure, Dig Dug is probably the best Coin-Op Classic on XBLA: the achievements are well paced (most can get 10 of them, only the best will get the last two) and it's playable by all skill levels. You just keep coming back for more!!!

The reason I think it doesn't do so well is that people are put off initially, for one reason or another - maybe the super-retro graphics are just too much, or it looks too simple. But those are the best things about it!

Check out the trailer, as posted in another forum. It's the best things in the world ever.

This is maybe my least favorite game on the Arcade.

What is really, creamed corn?

Booooo!

No that's cool. The Dig Dug commumity welcomes free thought and recognises the right to your own opinion. However, I think you'll find IT RULES!

Since unlocking the Dig achievement I've reconsidered. I mainly dislike level 1 and the big headed jelly beans.. Level 2 and it's fire-breathing alligators is fine by me.

I really like the Namco classics: Galaga, Dig Dug, and Ms. Pacman. They have great replay value and are just fun to waste time on. PacManCE is pretty fun too, I like the updated look, wish they would do that with the other Namco games....

Often, it's hard to understand how a classic can truly be a classic if a good number of people don't see it (such as the poster above me).  Like he said, to each their own, but in our heart of hearts, we all love Dig Dug!

I understood this part, but no matter what I've been unable to get this acheivement. Do you find there is a particular level this is easiest to get? Level 1 or something higher? Any secrets or tips you can impart?

Level 1 is the best.  It took me many, many attempts.

I agree with that. I also like how Namco treats their classics arcade franchises by giving us the original versions
and not the crap (beefed up) versions that Konami and Black Sun are throwing at us. I *do* love the stylish menus
and digital manuals, though and I love it how they handled the Pac Man CE version - modernized more by style than
by technical means. Now, please give us 'Mr. Driller', Namco. Oh, and maybe a Xbox live multiplayer version
of the 'Druaga Online' arcade cabinet. That would be sweet.

Keep diggin' :)

I didn't even know it was available 'til last night. Went ahead and got it for only 400 points (I've played this game since I was a youngin'!).

Awesome =) I'm lovin' it (as mcdonalds would say)

I squashed 4 guys with one rock and laughed when I had to specifically squish only 2. Good stuff.

Yeah, but isn't it said that if Microsoft goes along with their new delisting policiy that this game will be taken off
the Live Arcade (together with other classics)? :(

Yeah I've heard that...I hope it doesn't happen but I don't know. I think it's pretty crummy of them, maybe they could at least host it somewhere for people who have paid to downloaded it.

No clue how it'll work out.

I think you feel so strongly about it because as you said "I only started playing it a month ago". I think most gamers who "would" be into Dig Dug have probably already bought it at least once in the past on a compilation. I've personally bought it 4 times previously. First on Atari 2600, then on GBA then on PS1 then on PS2. The wow factor goes away when faced with yet another opportunity to buy the same game, even though the game *is* great.

This game is a classic and I realize not everyone likes classical things but would you "delist" a '70 Corvette just because the technology, performance, and stlying is not current? With 465hp it can be a lot of fun to drive.

Honestly, I don't think I bought any other reproductions of Dig Dug because, just by looking at the screenshots displayed on the box, I knew it wouldn't be the same game. Some are horrible, like making a replica of the Mona Lisa with a box of crayons! I like the game but I don't want to support poor imitations. On XBLA, Dig Dug looks the same, sounds the same, and plays the same as it does in the arcade. They should keep it on the list just for that reason.

Completed 27 retail games
Completed 20 arcade games
