I'm going to grab my shovel and continue the deep...
UB – the problem lies in the belief many parents have in the innate goodness of man. History shows this not to be the case and we are doomed to repeat the darkest periods of history if we cannot recognize the preludes to war. I’m not about to toss my son in front of the TV and make him watch a Vietnam documentary, but I will expose him to violence in a responsible manner – showing the benefits and consequences of action.
I have the same issue with several of my friends, until I explain the rationale behind the study of violence. “The only rational reason to master violence is to abolish it.” This was the mantra drummed into my head from day one in entering martial arts. One cannot truly respect and defend liberty and freedom without understanding the measures taken in the past to install and preserve it.
Video games are the current means of storytelling - no different than novels, radio shows, TV, or movies in the past. The games designed for children are very clear cut – black/white and play out a story of good vs. evil, with good always triumphing. The games designed for more mature audiences play in the grey areas, although even though some games may glamorize “evil doers”, they typically do the right thing. The reason I keep coming back to the GTA series are that the main character makes the honorable decision – defending family, friends, etc. and is portrayed as a victim of circumstance.
EJ – I’m going to be your most biased source, but you have to go with L4D2! Zombies!!! Sorry, but I’m riding a zombie high this year after L4D, Crash Course, and Zombieland.
Looking at my friends list I’m upset that I’m not getting Dragon Age, but I just can’t justify another game right now when I haven’t finished many of the titles I own. I still have tons of content to go through in Fallout and loving every radiation soaking minute of it, then I have Borderlands to try out and MUA2 which keeps giving me dirty looks.
