The difference is while a good movie or book will simply let you watch the story unfold gaming will actually let you control that protagonist.
Advantage: video games of any genre.
I would disagree with this. A great video game certainly can allow you to experience the story in a way that films never can ( by taking on the role). But a great film or book will always trump a mediocre, or average video game.
There are very few video game stories I can think of that hit the highest bar in terms of well told story and game play meeting in sublime perfection. And I feel that with one but not the other that it fails to be great in this genre. If the control is what makes it a more sublime genre then it needs to be there. And great controls without a great story makes me feel like something is lacking. So video games have a tougher row to hoe in that respect.
I don't think there is enough space in these forums to write all the books, films and TV series that have that effect on me. Even handicapped with not being able to have me control a character they slay 99 percent of the games I have played in terms of being a memorable experience.
Now video games are a new genre, esp when it comes to serious storytelling. I am sure in the coming years the list will grow.
