Five-O, Heat and Police Pursuits
One of the game modes that makes Need For Speed Most Wanted different to any-other is Free-Roam Police, Heat Levels and Police Pursuits.
Heat Levels
The more you enter pursuits with a vehicle; the allocated Heat Level will increase. Heat Levels determine which level of Police will be used. As the Heat Level increases, better performance vehicles will be used to hopefully stop you. The following list shows you which Heat uses which level of service, which car the Police drive and the techniques which will be used by the authorities. It should be noted, that as the Heat increases, the more difficult it will be to evade the pursuit but, you will rack up a much higher amount of bounty in a much shorter time. In addition, as you race or enter pursuits using another vehicle (or change the appearance of your vehicle with Part and Visual Upgrades) the Heat Level will drop on your other vehicles.
Heat One – Police Cruiser (Officially Ford Crown Victoria)
Heat Two – Undercover Police Cruiser (Officially Ford Crown Victoria)
Heat Three – State Cruiser (Officially Holden Monaro/Pontiac GTO)
Heat Four – State Undercover (Officially Holden Monaro/Pontiac GTO)
Heat Five – Federal Sport Cruiser (Officially Chevrolet Corvette Z06)
Heat Six – Federal Sport Undercover (Officially Chevrolet Corvette Z06) and Police SUV Turbo (Super Charged)
Heat Seven – All Police Vehicles, Including Police SUV Rhino (Turbo Charged)
Five-O
If you are not in your safe-house, chances are that you will be either in a race or driving in free-roam. As you drive, your actions will determine whether the police will be alerted to follow you. Police are alerted whenever you destroy/damage property of the state (such as walk-way scenery and civilian vehicles). In addition, the higher your Heat is, the higher the chances that the police will be alerted. In addition, after you drive in free-roam for a prolonged period of time, you will notice that the police will begin to drive throughout the streets … simply patrolling the area. If your Heat Level is between 1-3, they will not engage in a pursuit unless they see you in violation of one of the eight infractions. However, if your Heat Level is 4 or above, the police will engage in a pursuit immediately. To evade from the police (before a pursuit has been initiated) simply enter a Safe-House or Car Dealership. You can enter reduce your Heat Level by either customising your car or racing/engaging in a pursuit with another car.
Police Pursuits
Once a police authority sees you breaking an infraction, they will initiate a pursuit. Police pursuits can start either during a race or, in free-roam. Before I explain the nature of pursuits and methods on how to evade them, I will explain some of the commonly used terms.
Pursuit Breakers – These are locations throughout the city which when driven through, will create a diversion/event, which will result in following police vehicles either being destroyed, or stopping in order to provide assistance to other vehicles. In order to maximise the effect of these Pursuit Breakers, plan your route so that you can hit them when the police vehicles are right behind you. There is no use in wasting a pursuit breaker when there are no cars present or close enough for the breaker to take effect.
Back-Up – After time has elapsed police cars will eventually drop-out of the pursuit. Similarly, as you immobilise/destroy police vehicles, the amount of cars which are chasing you will fall. In order to keep the pursuit going, the police will call for “Back-Up”. In Back-Up, the police will call for more units. Once the police call for Back-Up, a timer will begin and at the end of that time, additional units will re-join the pursuit. When the police call for Back-Up, you should aim to enter Cooldown Mode immediately. If you re-enter a pursuit during Cooldown Mode, and before you entered Cooldown, there was a Back-Up timer, the timer will re-appear. The higher the Heat Level, the less time it takes for re-enforcements to arrive. In addition, the higher the Heat Level, the more units will join the pursuit if the timer is completed.
Cooldown Mode – Once you are out of the line-of-sight of any police authority, you will enter “Cooldown Mode”. In order to evade the pursuit you MUST enter Cooldown Mode and stay in an area until the meter has completely filled-up. If, at any point, the police re-find you, you will re-enter the pursuit and are therefore liable to be arrested. You must then again, re-enter the Cooldown Mode and start again in filling up the meter. The higher the Heat Level, the longer the time it will take for the Cooldown Meter to completely fill.
Cooldown Areas – Once you have entered the Cooldown Mode, the map will present to you “Cooldown Areas”. These are shown as blue circles on the map. When you park your car in a Cooldown Area, the Cooldown meter will fill quickly. These areas are out-of-sight and the police will, a majority of the time, not spot you if you are parked in one. Cooldown Areas will generally be positioned behind big walls or in car parks. In some cases, if you are not followed by a police car, but not in a Cooldown mode, you can park your car in a Cooldown Area (if you can remember where they are) and the police will not see you.
In a pursuit, the Heat Level will determine the skill difficulty of the police, the tactics used in the pursuit to stop your vehicle, the amount of police vehicles that will be used and the difficulty of escaping the chase.
So, once you have been engaged in a pursuit, you must drive around the city, using “Pursuit Breakers” to damage the police vehicles, and hopefully knock off each car, one-by-one, until you can enter a “Cooldown Mode” and eventually evade the pursuit.
As you spend more time in a pursuit, your Heat Level will slowly increase. The lowest being 1 and the highest (that you will encounter in Career Mode) is 5. The higher the Heat, the harder it will be for you to last in the pursuit, and ultimately evade it. In a pursuit, you should be aiming to achieve one of two goals …
1) Evade it immediately
2) Stay in the pursuit to stay in there long enough to reach enough bounty and reach other criteria to satisfy Milestone requirements.
I must say, that whenever you are entered into a pursuit, that you MUST aim to evade it and not get caught. The goal to success is, to learn the locations of Pursuit Breakers, and then Cooldown Areas close by. In Need For Speed Most Wanted, evading a pursuit, will take time and in most cases, you will not be able to evade it straight away (especially if you are in a Heat 3 or above). The following is a list of Pursuit Breakers which are close to Cooldown Areas, and if you use them appropriately, you can evade a pursuit.
1) Trucks which carry loads of cars, trucks or stone pipes. If you hit anyone of the tires the truck will release its load and this will result in an instant Pursuit Breaker. Trucks of this sort are found on highways and freeways.
2) Any Pursuit Breaker located close to an alleyway or underground car park
3) Streets that are used as shortcuts when in a race (if you decide to use this as a cooldown area, make sure no Police see you enter, and try to keep your car in the middle so that no Police can see your vehicle from either side.)
4) The Stadium located in Rosewood. This includes two massive pursuit breakers located on either end of the stadium … as well as a cooldown mode located in the undercover car park.
5) The Amphitheatre located in Downtown Rockport. This includes a Pursuit Breaker located at the large end of the theatre … and then as you drive through the smaller end … a nearby construction site contains another pursuit breaker and then a cooldown area located undercover before the jump.
As I said before, only use a Pursuit Breaker, when you have police vehicles close-by. You want to get as many as you can with the one hit.
So … plan your Pursuit Breakers well, know Cooldown Areas and be able to drive away from any sight from police whenever they may appear on the mini-map.
Infractions
The severity of you pursuit, and the extent of your damages, are determined by your “Infractions” and how many of them you break. They are as follows … and what you need to do in order to be fined with them.
Damage to Property – Damage of any sort, whenever you drive over or through public property (Such as road signs and property/buildings).
Driving Off Roadway – Driving out of the pavement or areas which are specified for driving (Such as parks).
Speeding – Driving over 150 miles per hour.
Excessive Speeding – Driving over 180 miles per hour.
Reckless Driving – Driving over 200 miles per hour.
Hit & Run – Damage to another civilian vehicle.
Ramming a Police Vehicle – Damage to a police vehicle.
Resisting Arrest – Entering a Cooldown Mode during a pursuit.
