Whats funny is I hardly ever see lag in COD3 and the hit detection is always almost perfect.

I have been banned till 2161.

Just a small point of order, CoD2 also uses a client/server model, or as you put it, a host connection. You can see this just by looking at the ping times...there will always be one player sitting on zero...the host. This would not be the case in a P2P model.

I think you may be correct.  I think that COD3 went peer to peer to allow for large games fill with more players.

Just goes to show that COD4 & CODWaW are poorly programmed for the online game.

But if you can, please explain to me why in COD4 if you were host, you were screwed.  It was better to quit and play another round as non-host.  I have noticed this and I have a buddy with a FiOs connection just for his xbox; he also noticed that being host would just suck up his mega-connection.

At a guess, I would say the game intoduces a range of latency compensators to try and even up the ping times. That's why matchmaking becomes critical. If ping times were spread in a small enough band, then probably its a good thing to be host.

I read this research paper on how you can take advantage of these problems. Although its looking at older games, I'm pretty sure that netcode hasnt developed that much in recent years and the same basic techniques are still being used.

Its a big problem with serverside hit detection. Frustration arises for a user because what he is 'seeing' isnt exactly what the server is judging the situation on. I also don't understand why they cant make clientside detection for consoles...they arent as likely to be hacked as a PC is.

Yes hit detection was the worst thing about COD4/CODWaW for exactly the reason you said.  This was not a problem in COD3.  Think of all the variables with COD4; the developers wanted you to lead the targets as you would in real life.  So your are leading a target from what you see on your xbox, for which the server must calculate from the position it places the character and a calculated lead time plus mismatched players.  Total chaos.  I actual got good at calculating lag by watching a players move so that I could sniper headshots in COD4.  Sometimes I would shoot behind the player, other times I would shoot in front of the player and sometime I would shoot at the opposite end of the map and actual get my headshots.  I must say, it made the game more challenging for sniping.  But the lag is so bad now, it is unplayable.
I may just be the last thing you see before you re-spawn!

now i do admit i miss the huge maps in cod 3 with the jeeps and motorcycles. also one big thing i miss is when all my friends are over the only games we can all play online is cod 3 and halo 3. treyarch made waw a little too much like cod 4 . yeah they put some tanks into the game and a couple of medium sized maps. but its noting like 3. waw is still a good game ill play it until 10th prestige like i did with 4, and put 3 in when the friends are over.

Not necessarily the same type of gameplay as CoD3 and it doesn't use the Aim Down Sights feature, but it's made by Valve who know a thing or two about multiplayer games.

If like me you loved the online side of CoD3 when you would have a full team communicating and working together to win the game, then I think you would like L4D. 4 player co-op and versus. Action packed game, loads of replay value. First game I've played since CoD where your team mates actually tell you where the enemy is etc (zombies in this case).

There's some good gameplay vids on youtube, infact there's a video on Spotlight at the moment too.

and playing AS the infected is a nice change of pace as well with each infected having a special ability.
If you like to get up close and personal, then you'll have fun being a hunter pouncing on the survivors distracting them, or breaking them apart.

If you like long range and more of a sniper in other games, then a smoker is perfect since you can get on high buildings and contrict the humans with your freakishly long lizard tounge.  Boomers I think are more for the stealth person who likes to get their enemies when they dont know it, so spitting bile on them from behind or the side when not looking is great.  and for the rambo person, well then the tank is good as you can just go on a stampede throwing cars and rocks at the survivors but they only spawn maybe once per level (once for you, once for the other players)

Sounds and looks too far fetched.  We are looking for a military strategy game, like COD3, but with modern weapons.  COD4 was too dumbed down and required no strategy.

Let me know if you find anything that's good, as for now, I'm sticking with COD3.

Well, it is a zombie survival game, so it's obviously not gonna be realistic.

If you're looking for an ultra realistic military sim, I'd suggest you look into Operation Flashpoint 2 Dragon Rising if your not already.  Over 70 real world weapons, realistic ballistic physics, and damages.  You get hit in a major artery you need to find a medic or call evac so you dont bleed out.  Basicaly if it can happen in real life it can happen in the game, more or less.  2 hits or so to kill, body armour can degrade and get worn, bleeding out, limbs can get blown off, I believe customizable weapons, and so much more.

I'm still playing COD3, a game I've put hundreds of hours in on and one of the best games on Live in my opinion; but I've been having a blast with Battlefield: Bad Company.

I hated the demo after playing it a few times because the weapons' damage is weak, so I was done with it.  I wouldn't have touched it again or even rented it.

Then a buddy of mine who I met playing COD3 kept hounding me to get in his games, and the game really grew on me once I adjusted to the gameplay.

It has the feeling of COD3 to me as far as feeling like a part of a big war, and strategy does come into play in the two game types.  The maps are huge, so there's chaotic moments when you choose to spawn on your squad who's trying to cap an objective and other times when you spawn away from the action and can plan an attack.

If the weapons damage was strengthened a bit, full team chat was added, I'd like it even more than COD3.  Plus, I saw on the BF:BC board some place had it for $20.  It's worth a rental at least.  Great damn game.

Not as bad as in COD3 where boosters pretty much ruined ranked CTF matches.  Luckily, Dice didn't abandon the community like Treyarch did and fixed their product when people were flipping over jeeps and repairing them to get thousands of points per match.

I do know of a few shady ways to get a lot of points, but I'm sure you'll understand why I won't share them with you, HALOPWNSU.

BFBC is a really fun game, I enjoy it.  Havent really played it in a while due to other good games coming out (L4D, FC2, RB2 lol).  Always went with the F2000, or SCAR on Attack, and 870 or T194 on Defense.  Weapon damage may be a bit weak, but with the huge maps, I think its balanced.  I mean you dont wanna chug all the way across the map and die in 2 shot only to start back at base.

Yeah, it's a blast.   I use almost every kit except for the sniper class depending on what's happening around me, where I'm spawning, etc.  Adds a fun element to the game.  It's not the same old thing time and time again.

As far as weapons damage, I don't want a two hit kill with any weapon other than the weaker sniper rifles.  I just think the damage needs to be bumped up a little bit.

I've adjusted to it, but it's like you're shooting rubber bullets.  It takes an awful lot of rounds with some weapons to drop targets.

The good thing about that is I think it kept a lot of the COD4 crowd away.  They didn't like not being able to get a kill with one pull of the trigger and a three round burst from their M16, just like I didn't like not having my one shot kill Kar98.

Glad I stuck with it and my buddy kept badgering me to join his games.  I'm looking forward to BF:BC 2.  I just hope they have team chat.  That's my biggest gripe with the game.

Yeah I wouldnt have minded if they had proxy or squad leader to leader chat at least, but it was a new engine and they couldnt do everything I'm sure they wanted to on their first go.  So I too am looking forward to BFBC 2.

My only gripe about the damage is the grenades from the grenade launchers.  They do nothing, even if you hit them directly.  but I can live with it, I use it for only destoying vehicles and walls.

For me I go Assault or Spec Ops on Attack depending on the Faction.  Russian I go with the F2000, USA, I go with the SCAR.  On Defense, it's normally Demo, if I'm the MEC, or USA.  If not, then it depends

I thought the same thing about the grenade launcher at first, but reading up on it they designed them to be mainly used to blow up walls and buildings and hardly do any damage otherwise, like you mentioned.

It makes sense.  If the launchers were powerful it would be 100 times worse than COD4 as far as "noob tubing" goes.  Not to mention how effective getting a group of guys tubing a crate in Gold Rush would be.

A few tweaks here and there, especially with the chat function, BF:BC 2 might be good.  I just hope there's no damn perks.  People seem to love them in COD4, WaW; but I think they're pure garbage.

Yeah that was another reason why they had the GL's do less damage.  Only reason why it bothers me is because I only need one more patch for my Bronze, Silver, and Gold Assault Rifle Patch, and its the get 6 kills with the GL in a round.  But yeah, your not the only one.  I cant stand those perks in the new COD.

Cod3 is still my favourite shooter on 360, just fantastic. Great hit detection, great lobby system (you get to choose the game youll enter), up to 24 players, epic battles. Where as cod4 has horrible hit detection, crappy matchmaking that puts you 5 times in a row in the same laggy room you just left, 12 players max unless you play lag war oh i mean ground war that is 18 max, and i dont remember any epic battles in cod4, just epic grenade spamming. The difference between a good game and a great game is all about connection in cod4, with 4 bar connection i have gone over 40 kills and less that 5 deaths many times in team deathmatch where the limit is 750 points(75 kills). Cod3= best player wins > cod4= best connection wins if players are anything close to equal

For anybody interested, I had mentioned BF:BC being 20 bucks in an earlier post.   Through the 7th, I think it is, Best Buy has the game new for 19.99.  Not a bad deal.

I took your advice and bought the game at Circuit city for a total including tax of $26. 8 something

Got used to the rubber bullets and the extremely small characters pretty quick.  It's a good game worth playing.  Wish there were more game types.  I still do not understand the Conquest game.  Since I just started, I am stuck with the low end weapons and do not know the maps - makes me an easy target; however, I have place a couple of times within thge top 4 players on the winning team.  I have been playing Recon (sniper).  I'll keep working at it, but COD3 is still the best game.  If COD3 is a 10 out of 10, then BF: bad Company is an 7out of 10.  COD4 is a 1 to 5 out of 10 depending on the connection.

Thank you for the heads up about BF Bad Company

Dont worry, you'll get used to BFBC soon.  The starting weapons you have are really no different than any of the other guns you unlock later, and actually, IMO are the best guns overall.  Conquest is kinda like Domination from COD 4.  You have 5 flags set around the map, and the objective is to cap all the flags, in no order.  also keep in mind you can only communicate to 3 other people who are in your squad (squadmates are light blue, everyone else is blue).  any more questions feel free to ask me, and if you need a squad mate you can add me, but im still waiting for my 360 to get fixed so i wont be on for a little bit

Not a problem, Shihan Do Jack.  The game might grow on your more like it did me when I unlocked all the special abilities of the classes.

It's a ton more fun to play now that I got all the gadgets you can get.  I have to admit, though, sometimes the weapons damage still ticks me off.  They should just bump it up a bit.  When you use some of the other kits quite a bit you'll see what I mean.

I rarely play as a sniper, but I see you've been using the recon class.  A good unlock they have is a laser designator.  You paint a tank for a few seconds through a set of goggles, and then you get a lock on sound and get to guide a bomb on the target from an aerial view that follows the bomb down to the dirt.  Really useful for the recon class.

As far as Conquest, I just can't get into it.  Kramerllama explained it in a nutshell. It reminds me of war in COD3 as to how you capture the position, but everything is all over the place instead of a progression from one positon to the next.

That's why I only play Gold Rush.  Like CTF there's a more defined objective people are battling over, and the game seems to flow better from one area of the map to the next instead of just random encounters all over the place.

If you have any questions about the game or how to use any of the unlocks, just holler.  I've been addicted to it lately since work is so slow.

At this point I stopped playing BF: Bad Company  - it was messing up my COD3 play, plus I just have more fun with COD3.  I am now going to give COD4 a retry, but only with the following parameters.  I have 3 friends living in the same house on a High speed FiOs connection.  We will will set-up a private ownly match between the four of us.  There should be no or limited lag issues between the three of them; however, ever I expect to have some lag issues on my end since I am DSL and a two hour California drive away from them.  I am hoping this will make the game playable for us.  If not, then we will all know, for sure, that the online problems are not lag, but poor programming.  I'll let you know, how it goes.
Don't worry, if it goes well, I'll still be playing mostly COD3.

Cool.  I still go back and forth between BF:BC and COD3.  As much as I've loved COD3 over the years, though, I'm having more fun with BF:BC.  Can't wait for BF:BC 2.

If they make the game have full team chat, my days playing COD3 might be few and far between.  That's one thing I love about COD3 is the teamwork on a 12 v 12 of CTF.  I hate the squad only chat in BF:BC.  Takes a lot of the fun out of it.

Having an objective based game where you can't communicate with everybody makes no sense.

I AGREE.

I am hoping that COD MW2 fixes the online component of COD MW.  Plus makes some other changes.

I don't like the MP in COD4 too many uber god players. I mean, seriously, no 24 player battle on huge maps with tanks and vehivles? what a shame. COD 4's campaign rocked though, i think COD 4's campaign is better than COD 3's. But COD 3 Multipler > COD 4 multiplayer big time. The only things i don't like about COD 3 are the bugs and Cpl. Keith from the british campaign. Cpl. Keith SUCKS.

I'm a long-time COD3 fan, and I still love the game to this day.   That said, I'm now a BF:BC fan and enjoy the gameplay a lot more for more reasons than I have time to list here.  I just don't like the limited squad comms.

When I want to play a game with good teamwork and guys on a mic coordinating attacks, I'll fire up COD3 and play some CTF.   If not, I'll play BF:BC.

I'm hoping BF:BC2 has team chat.  It would make it a lot more fun.  Then there's Operation Flashpoint 2 coming out that might take me away from BF:BC.  I'm hoping.  OFP1 was a blast.

At least other companies aren't putting out garbage like COD 4 and  COD: WaW that I can enjoy playing.  I thought with their success the FPS market might be flushed down the crapper and COD3 would be the last shooter I ever enjoyed.
