They are the same person.  Also in Japan he was known only as Eggman untill Sonic Adventure 1 or 2 where they took his American/European(not sure what europe called him in the old days) and made Robotnik his last name and Eggman a nickname.  The Americans decided to name him Dr. Robotnik I believe it had something to do with Eggman not being an evil enough name for Americans at that time.

Believe it or not, Dr Robotnik was the first name used, the American version was released just before the Japanese one. 

People started to get confused so they officially switched it to Eggman in all regions.

I know it was called Dr. Robotnik over in Europe when I bought the game in 1991 or 1992. In fact I heard Eggman for the first time playing this XBLA version

Yeah it's Robotnik, Eggman is just a dumb name.

I have Been calling him Dr. Robotnik Since the Early 90's and First heard that Dr. Eggman from a Programme called Sonic X.

You can't really say they've made a huge mistake from bringing in the whole "Egg" stuff. It was there way before Sonic X. Just look at his machine he battles you in through out Sonic 1, the "Egg"mobile? Meh.

EDIT: Oh, wait, the Egg Carrier was from Sonic Adventure. My bad.

In 1995 (I think it was) there was a game for Game Gear called "Sonic Drift 2" and Robotnik was referred to as "Eggman." The manual said that the other characters called him that to tease him or something. :P Also, that weasel character from Triple Trouble (Knack or something) was called Fang in that game. Probably his Japanese name.

He used to be a goody two shoes skinny professor called Dr. Kintobor.  Had an accident which turned him fat and evil, and became Dr. Robotnik, which is Kintobor backwards.  At least, that's the way I remember it, or some form of that story.

Edit: I remember now that story was in the Sonic comics.  Ahh to be a kid again..

Exactly how I remember it. It'll always be Dr. Robotnik.

Extending on the comic, Sonic was supposedly brown with crap sneakers, then Kintober got Sonic to run in the sneakers he wears now, but he ran so fast that the accident occured, and Sonic turned blue.

That's what I've heard and read anyhow.

It was Eggman for me 'till I saw Sonic's animated cartoon ^^

They called him Robotnik there, and that's how I learned ^^

God, this takes me back!

Did you also know that later on in the series, you find out that Sonic himself (in the future) is the "person" who created Dr Robotnik in the first place? (It was in the Brotherhood of Metallix storyline, where they took the rotten egg out of the fridge so Robotnik would cease to exist, meaning they could take over the World or something). God, I feel like a geek now!

Anyway, he will ALWAYS be Robotnik to me, Eggman (although appropriate) is a crap name imo!

I dont think that really cares. The creators of the game are still Sonic Team Japan not Sega of America, and they always named them Eggman.
Its just Sega of America who changed the manual on the USA version (and later Europe did the same).

And the Kintobor thing only belongs to Sonic the Comic and not for the games (and I never really liked the comics :/)

Eggman was always known as "Eggman" in Japan.  Up until Sonic Adventure 2, North America and Europe used the name "Robotnik".  NA and EU used "Eggman" as a nickname in Sonic Adventure before officially sticking with "Eggman" for all future games.

He is both. He likes to be called by the name of Robotnik but Sonic always calls him eggman. Just watch Sonic's cutscene in Sonic Adventure. Dr. Ivo Robotnik and Dr. Eggman are the same character. Eggman is his Japanese name and Robotnik is his American name(from Sonic 1 to Sonic Adventure 1.) People don't understand why his name changed is because Sonic fans from the 90's (like me) perfer Robotnik due to the name being much cooler and bringing the name Eggman here in the U.S. is pointless. But then again. Nintendo did the exact same thing with Mario's Princess Peach. Who was Americanly named as Princess Toadstool from the mid 80's to late 90's. For me, Since i'm in ways a nostalgic Sonic fan. I pefer the name Dr. Ivo Robotnik...

Truth be told this is a REALLY dumb topic to argue over or talk 'bout. The question was are they the same. Not: Eggman is better than...." or "Robotnik is better than..." The point is, it is Eggman now, and always will BE! And Sega America DOES help with games, in fact they are there at meetings for brainstorming via live webcasts. You all are just so blinded to this simplistic fact. Now to make it SIMPLE
