Please Don't Buy if you are Renting (long rant)
So a few days ago on Major Nelson there was the usual list of what is on the marketplace today. Call of Duty 3 map pack, cool. All Pro Football 2K8 ReelMaker to create highlight reels, neat. I own neither game, so on I went surfing away on the net. On Digg I found an interesting post, "More downloadable content that should've been in the game to begin with!" .. the link went right back to Major's page with the 2K8 listed, with the Digg user ranting on in the description portion how this should have been free. I am not too up to date on sports games lately, so seeing this did pique my interest, so off hunting for info about his rant I went. My findings were a little shocking.

1) The $5 download is only 108kb in size, that is awful small for a file that is marked as a "powerful replay editor" with the ability to construct your own highlight reel, add to this that the game was literally released just 5 days ago, those developers must have been working day and night on this lovely program that is only 108kb with so many features *sarcasm* .. let this part sink in first, 108kb, 5 days later, they just screwed you if you either bought the game and especially if you just bought the file (file = unlock code)

2) This isn't the first time 2KSports has done this. Like I said, I haven't touched a sports game in a bit, so this is really, all new to me. Please let me point you in the direction of Kotaku for a second, an article from December 21st 2006, has College Hoops 2K7 listed with a magical 108kb ReelMaker download, five bucks, feel free to be disgusted at the downloads for other games offered that all were obviously on the disc to begin with, thus you are just paying for the key to unlock this.

There are some sold that can be unlocked if you just play the game itself (Need for Speed, The Godfather), I say, more power to them, at least they allow you to earn the stuff, if not, enjoy paying for it. However, for the content that is on the disc already and they give you no option to use it without paying a fee?! W T F?! Seriously, this has all managed to pass my unknowing eye because this was all on games that did not effect me (I also didn't write on an Xbox web site before), so now that I am keeping up with all games, this is big time shocking, and the bigger shock is, why are you still paying these companies to do this? Do online petitions work? Of course not! Look no further Guitar Hero II and their rip off music packs. I believe at the least the people that complained when the price was heard at first did make somewhat of a difference, as they were going to offer the packs monthly, and it definitely took a bit before that second set was offered, imo, time to let the online whiners cool down and forget about it.

Stop buying 2KSport games. Support Rock Band when it arrives. If you work for 2KSports, end yourself. Bah, what ever happened to a Game Genie/Gameshark for all systems, they could help end this crap now. Please.

your whining for no damn reason, no one forces you to buy the highlight reel, its optional so you have no reason to complain about this. if you don't want it don't get it, its an option. and before you say something like "its a marketing scheme" or some other BS all the companies are doing this nowadays, its what xbox live is now. don't want it dont buy it, that simple

No damn reason my ***.  I am not complaining about the fact that they offer something that should be free (that would be another rant), it is they are offering you something that IS ALREADY ON THE DISC!   How the *** are they going to sell you a game, now you own, and not give you everything that is on that disc?   That is BS and you know it.

once again you don't have to buy it, whether its on the disc or not isn't important. more companies will do it

Of course I don't have to buy it, and I won't.   Whether it is on the disc or not is definitely important, as when they sell you the product on the Marketplace, they advertise it as a feature you are downloading to add onto the game, not an unlock code.  If they were honest, cool beans, but it isn't.   Sorry you are moneybags and have extra green to let game companies *** us all, but I don't have that sort of cash to support such things.

I never once said I "supported it" because I don't. I don't believe in charging for extra content when we're already paying more money for next gen games. but xbox live has become a great way for them to make more money so they'll continue to use it

Ah, there you go then,  I think the charging for extra content.. eh.. I am on the fence about it, I have bought things in the past for some games (which now has become free content, so I feel screwed on that).  But with this game (and a couple of other 2kGames), they aren't selling you "Extra Content" .. the stuff they are selling you is actually already encoded on the disc itself when you buy it.    I enjoy the Xbox Live Marketplace itself.

waa "i want stuff for free!" waa "why do things money?" waa!

ever here these phrases before? "can i get you another drink?" "you want fries with that?"

it's how companies providing a service make money. Add ons and up sells. Get used to it. It's how everything works in our society. From getting the better sound system or leather seats when buying a car, choosing first class when you fly, to the cute cocktail waitress trying to get you to keep drinking to make the bar more money and get herself a better tip....to video games providing $5 add ons to make more money for thier company. Great thing is you can say no to the fries, more drinks, get the generic speakers in your car and not download reelmaker. You have freedom of choice and no gun to your head forcing you to go either way.

What a country.

Whew, someone who understands what is actually going on with the unlock code.  Anyways, not "all games are like that" ..  it is just the 2kSports games and a few other games that no one cares about.   It isn't Microsoft's fault, plenty of games offer free downloads and updates, this is soley 2K.

I know the original post was long, but it included every answer to most the questions that keep getting asked or comments amde.  It is 2K doing the wrong here.  Microsoft isn't helping by not regulating what gets sold on their marketplace, or specifically, how it is sold (ie, they are offering no new product here, but just the unlock code, at the least they should say it is such).  This has been going on since the original College Hoops 2K7 came out.  it isn't just 2KSports though, as there is a good list of just about under 10 games that do this, so it shows that it isn't something that is even accepted through out the gaming developers.  I am surprised everyone is fine with it, very sad.   What does capitalism have to do with selling someone an unlock code for something they have already bought?     Where else do you buy anything and they do not allow you to use the full product which you bought?   Do you buy a phone and it comes with the number keys 1 through 9, yet the only let you use 8 of them?   Do you buy a burger with everything, and you can eat it all except the meat, you have to pay extra for that even though its in your burger?

*** are missing the point.  ill be the first waiting online for a DLC that is new and created after the game is released to update/upgrade the game and extend the life of the game. what i have a problem with just like this poster is when they leave content off the game and charge you money for something that would have and SHOULD HAVE  been included if there was no marketplace or the game was released a couple years ago.  all these gaming companies are doing is leaving content off the games when they are released and a month later trying to sell you it.  go ahead and throw the your just cheap its only $5 comment out. but it doesnt apply when i have and a lot of other people have dropped more the $2,000 on the system, games, accessories, and content but we're cheap right? all you jerk offs can reply with your cheap or dont buy it. im gonna buy the game but i sure as *** am not going to buy shitty editor that they left off the game. well actually i bought the game and it was so *** awful that i already returned it and just cut my loses. and this is coming from someone who has loved the nfl2k's back to 2k on the dreamcast.  this game is just horrible, maybe they shouldnt be worried about a video editor and fix the graphics that looks worse then 2k5 did on the original xbox.  how about fixing the passing game so they dont throw the ball 15 yards off the receiver when hes wide open? or the shitty slow (even if you turn game speed to fast and tweak the difficulty settings) game play that is like playing madden on the nintendo 64. i know its the first release on the 360 and i wasnt expecting a fine tuned game. but this is just embarrassing and not going to help this franchise.  they should be *** ashamed for putting garbage like this out, if its not ready they should have waited til next year.

WTH, the download (which I have to pay for) is only a key to unlock content I already PAID for?! (On the disc.) What boogles the mind more than that is people on the board here defend it and attack the OP. Thanks for informing me of this, I won't be supporting any paid DLC for this game.

As some of you may know, Oblivion also does this... they have some of those dungeons already on the disc, but you pay for the 'key', if you will, to unlock these dungeons...  kind of a cheap trick if you ask me, but that's why I will never buy anything from marketplace (well, I will probably download some new Halo 3 maps when they come out).

I think what VHN9ne understands, which a lot of people (including yourself) do not understand, is that this is more than getting screwed by downloading stuff off the marketplace, as I like the marketplace, and they really don't *** anyone with things they sale there (if you want to pay cash for a theme, go for it, at least you know what you are buying).  It is because they are offering something to you that YOU ALREADY PAID FOR when you bought the disc, they are not telling you waht you are buying, which is just an unlock code for content on the disc already.  It is that simple.  Yet I guess not simple enough for everyone to understand.

It seems there are more than 13 people up in arms about this.

Technically he is right (but not really with satellite)...If you have cable/digital cable you pay for the cable to be connected to your TV(using your reasoning)...There are tons of channels that you don't have access too, but they are fully accessible through that cable, all the signals are there...You just pay for an upgrade which basically just gives you an "access code" to get more channels...Same??? Different??? Thoughts???
