They need to just have a DRM refresh input on your xbox.com profile page. Just a box you can input any serial number you want into to refresh the DRM. It would be a conditional refresh of course. EG, the DRM doesn't get refreshed until the previous xbox that has the DRM associated to it connects to live once (to deactivate it) and the new one logs on (to activate it). This would allow MS to stop people from selling Uber Arcade boxes with their ethernet ports deactivated on ebay, and allow us to stop pulling out our hair. I'm sure their tech support retard staff would apreciate the decrease in angry calls as well.
That also wouldn't work if you had two HDs. You could keep one associated with Xbox #1 and use the second for Xbox #2.
Foolish to punish the legit masses while trying to stop less than 10% of the folks who would jump through hoops to do something illegal. Let the small amount of jerks and thieves have their way. A less horrible DRM scheme will generate more revenue than is lost on them. Like Microsoft is discovering that DRM free MP3s sell better and produce less tech support hassles, so too should they discover the same about DRM free DLC, or at least, you know, SANE DRM. Unfortunately, the ill-conceived concept of taking your DLC with you and playing it on anyone's console is causing this DRM nightmare. If they just abandoned that concept, the DRM could have been much better:
For example: A DRM scheme where the game EXE does a self check to see if its "been" on more than say, 3 consoles. If it has, it locks itself from working on additional consoles, and you can only get it unlocked remotely if you've proven to MS that your system went to repair 3 times, etc. But, becuase of the darn memory card play anywhere concept, this won't work. Abandon the concept, and abandon memory cards. They are so 90s. Here the PS3's DRM scheme and lack of memory cards shines. In fact, I have only ever purchased DLC for the PS3 since getting one, since I won't be burned by the MS DRM scheme as I have on almost $500 worth of content! Also, none of the XBLA releases have been as good as what's on PSN in a long time anyway... since Puzzle Quest!
