How do you prefer to use the controller at this game

When I played this in the arcade in the 80's I developed a technique that no one I knew could beat, I squeezed the arms thight into the body and almost had spasmic mashing on the buttons, I don't remember what times I had but I alsways came top on the events that was speed related.

I'm still way behind the best on the Xbox version, my PB on 100m is 9.05 and the technique I use is that I squeeze the controller between my thigs (perv alert ;) ) and then quickly wiggle the left stick as fast as I can, and I use my left hand to press the action button, however it doesn't seem to react as fast as the buttons on the arcade did or the old joysticks for C64 or Amiga (winter, summer games etc. from epyx also had some events that needed you to press/wiggle fast, hope they relase this games on xbox live as well).

Still haven't made a valid high jump on this one tough, it's hard.

I turn the controller 90 degrees clockwise and hold it with my left hand, I use my left thumb to hit the A button, I use my right hand to move the thumbstick up and down...that's how I roll

Re: How do you prefer to use the controller at this game

I struggled with finding a comfortable method at first. Button mashing isn't very comfortable on the controller and being right handed meant waggling the stick with my left hand and hitting the button with my right wasn't very effective co-ordination wise.

Then my wife suggested I turn the controller upside down and waggle with my right hand (oo-er) and tap the button with my left. Stupid me for not thinking of that...

I also use the upside down controller method but do it with my Dead or Alive arcade stick. Much better than the standard Xbox controller for this game. :)

Since I am right handed I also turn the controller 90 degrees. I press the "A" button with my left index finger and move the left analog stick back and forth with my right hand while the controller is tightly wedged between my chest and my right leg.(Yes that means I'm almost completely leaning forward). Akward? Yeah but it works well for me.

P.S. - this seems like it would be easier for a left handed person. lol

Do you think Microsoft will ever release a retro-styled joystick, such as the Cheetah (for the 8-bit machines) or the bug (for the Amiga)

The bug was particularly useful for SWOS and the cheetahs were great for the everything else speccy related

Ditto.

This game is gonna kill my left thumbstick.  :(

After playing a few times last night I fired up Oblivion, and sure enough the view "drifted" just a bit even when I wasn't touching the LS.   Guess I'm gonna have to designate one of my controllers as my T&F controller only.

Mad Catz have a joystick available for the 360, but from everyone that i've talked to that's used it they said it was REAL Bad!!

Here's a link: http://www.ebgames.com/product.asp?cookie%5Ftest=1&product%5Fid=802511

I hope Microsoft bring out an official Arcade Joystick. In the meantime i think i will still get this one as i'm interested in the spinner for the upcoming Space Giraffe. Hopefully it will be worth it for that alone, as i know that Tempest 2000 plays best on the Atari Jaguar with the rotary controller.

Btw, i use the DOA4 stick and keep changing positions as i get spasming RSI attacks! lol

same here ;)  I'm now developing a callus on my palm where my middle finger bone meets.  Well, I guess that's better than the pinched skin I used to get using the trackball back in the arcade ;)

I think this is one of the more popular methods for holding the controller. Its how I roll as well...

I had the Speedking and it sure gave me speed in the epyx series winter, summer, world games etc.

Broke a few of those. Also had the Competition Pro, still have some parts of that actually ;) Maybe I can build one for the 360 :)

You know you can go into settings at the main menu and shange the button configuration.  I changed my action to the left bumper and it works much better for me.

Re: How do you prefer to use the controller at this game

This is what works for me.  I lean back in my chair, lay the controller on my chest 90 degrees counter clockwise, use my left middle finger for the action (a) button and I jiggle the left stick with my right middle finger.  I get better times when I tense up my right forearm when running.  Also don't forget to jiggle the stick after your jump or throw.

This Quite a funny read. I also youse the upside down method. It took me awile to find a comfortable way. In fact im still trying LOL . I also have to lean the controller against something. Be it my knee or on the couch. I have gotten into some mad positions to play this lol

Im not as good as i once was, but Im as good ONCE as i ever was.

Re: How do you prefer to use the controller at this game

I use to play this in the arcades way back when.  I didn't have all the records, but was good enough in each event to go on for a long time (hours?)

I would put my thumbs on my pointer fingers knuckls to stiffen them up.  Then go to town on one button and hit the action button with my pinkey.  Had to skip several college classes because I just wouldn't not qualify.  I was recently seriously thinking of buying an old arcade machine just because I loved it so much.  I was thrilled when I found out this was downloadable on XBOX 360.

Just got the full version today, so am still working on it.  But I'm trying this same technique now, but it is much harder since the controller moves around.  I'm leary one using the stick because I don't want to ruin it.Tongue Tied [:S]

I can see that you have played Light, Camera, Action - Scene IT. Have you tried to uset hsi controller on Track and Field? It's a little easier than using the orginal controller, however I still miss a good arcade controller.

Ang. Re: How do you prefer to use the controller at this game

I just bought a Streetfighter fightstick controller and used this for Track & Field. Using the stick was by far the best way to play this game. Buttonsmashing didn't work as good as it did on the old arcadeversion of the game, but I guess practice makes perfect with this type of conroller.

Now I just needs more games to justify paying 100$ for this controller ;)
