Hard Stuff: Sharp Aquos LC-32GP1U

Vandermolth 08-12-2007, 3:14 PM

In the latest issue, Hard Stuff reviewed Sharp's newest 1080p 32 in tv. After looking at the specifications, there are no VGA ports, so I was wondering how the picture was "impressive" with HD-DVDs without 1080p? Were the movies only viewed at 720p over Component cables, or were additional adapters used (or even HDMI?)? The article didn't mention which connection the testers were using...

I'm really interested in the tv, so I'd appreciate someone clerifying the review to me.

Thanks!

Seems it would have to be HDMI... As only via VGA and HDMI can you get 1080p from the HD-DVD drive... And as you pointed out, no VGA on the LC-32GP1U.

I own this set and the hd-dvd drive.  I don't however own an Elite 360 or one of the new premiums with hdmi.  That said I can vouch for the picture quality of hd dvd movies in 1080i.  The set does a great job of deinterlacing.

To clerify, the article never claimed to view the movies and/or games in 1080p, I was just assuming it was since the the author (Ryan, I believe, I don't have the issue in front of me atm) dubbed it "impressive" I assumed it was viewed in 1080p

Seems like a fair assumption to me.

Why not run in the highest resolution possible?

Yes, this set was tested with an Elite running HDMI. I peeked over Ryan's shoulder as he watched Batman Begins.

Sorry, we should have made that cable issue clear in the review, but you guys came to the right conclusion anyway.  :)

One word for you, INCREDIBLE. I purchased one a few days ago (32") and I've been loving the HD gaming. I recently played through Bioshock in 1080p and later watching TV in another room in standard definition. My eyes were so used to the HD, it seemed as if my cable was fuzzy and distorted. lol i think it's a great buy

Can more owners of this TV share their opinions on them? I'm currently trying to decide between this TV and the Sony Bravia XBR4 32".

I was hoping to pick up a Sharp Aquos for my living room this past week but I got a Sony Bravia. Not because it looked better, because I couldn't find a Sharp in stock and my wife loved the picture she was seeing. I would honestly put them side by side on the top shelf of LCD sets I've seen right now.

I got my 40" Bravia from Costco, of all places. It rocks.

I have an Aquos - 26" I believe. It's got VGA, and is totally rad. I wanted the Bravia, and if I'd known at the time I could have afforded it... Nuts.
