This game has effectively killed the Wing Commander Franchise.
In a sense, this is a good thing. EA does not deserve to hold the Wing Commander title for one very clear point.  Wing Commander designed by Origin Software back in the early '90s was part of an era. That era, simply put, was the era of innovation. We are currently in an era of standardization. When I say we, I mean the video game entertainment consumer market.

In the late 80's the video game market was ripe with possibility because it was fresh and creative. Many great genres we now take for granted came from this innovation. The FPS or First Person Shooter is a great example of such innovation. Aerial and space combat simulation was also a genre which came from this innovation.

Unfortunately now after this era we have entered the era of big business and standardization. Electronic Arts is a great example of the era of standardization. The era of standardization is characterized by corporations absorbing the innovation of smaller companies before them and creating standardized filth like what we see with Wing Commander Arena. They (big corporations) have the resources available to them to acquire smaller creative companies and create new titles from old ideas and then sell them to you at a discounted price under the assumption that this generation of consumers does not remember the true innovators.

That is why you should not pay for this garbage or any other garbage like it. It also has the effect, in this case, of ruining a great idea so that it is rendered impotent and obsolete. This is what truely infuriates me. I will never again see a great game like Wing Commander 5 because the franchise has been raped of its essence. It also doesn't help the flight sim genre that there won't be a joystick released for consoles, but that's for another rant.

I guess you haven't read about Ace Combat 6.

He didn't worry about logic for the rest of the post, so why would that point be any different?
