MS: Why doesn't Chatpad work with XBox controller plugged into PC?

So, Wired 360 Controller.  Installed Chatpad.  USB audio device shows up, but the chatpad doesn't do anything.

For those wondering, the messenger kit showed in my local Gamestops today.  9/7 Friday.

So, the Controller works, the headset works, but the chatpad doesn't?

What's the deal?

Ok, so it also doesn't work with a wireless controller connected to the PC via the X360 Wireless Receiver for Windows.

Now, when I say works with, I expect that it should act like a keyboard and do simple things like type text into notepad.  I don't see a reason why this shouldn't work.

Is there a driver update or something that'll make this work?  Or does it only work in "Games for Windows"?  Or do I have to bring the two I bought back, because this simple bit of functionality was important to my purchase of these kits?

I am sure it would need drivers.  That being said, they are not included for the box and nowhere on the box does it say that it is compatble w/windows.  Not even on the website.  So if that is what you wanted it for I would take it back.  I am sure they did not figure on marketing to PC players due to the fact that pc's should already have a keyboard.

Why did you write in XNA Game studio here?  I checked it our hoping to find details on uysing the chatpad on the PC via the game studio, but found no info.  Were you able to get this to work?  I use my 360 controller for PC MMO's and having the chatpad available would let me finally be completely free of the keyboard on those types of games.

Re: MS: Why doesn't Chatpad work with XBox controller plugged into PC?

I was trying to be civil to the above poster showing an instance where the Chatpad working on the pc would be useful.

There are of course, other uses.  Yours is a good example.  Also  Windows Media Center.  Messenger on PC. Etc. Etc.  Heck, I could FIND a ton of uses for the Chatpad working w/ a wireless controller on the PC.

Considering the headsets show as USB devices, I was hoping the Chatpad would as well.

I'm sure there'll be documentation somewhere withing the XNA Framework SDK, so unless we get some other answer, I'm going to start looking there.

As for getting it to work, no joy. It has worked in no configurations that I've found on the PC.

Yes.  It shows up as a USB Audio device.  Try it.  Your system audio will come thru the earpiece.  And recording works.  Nice for skype and like.

From the product page:

"Chatting with friends and family on Xbox LIVE® and Windows-based PCs is easy using the Xbox 360 Messenger Kit."

Sounds like they're marketing it to PC users to me.

I do, however, remember reading a review somewhere where they stated that PC functionality wasn't finished yet.  It's probably a driver thing.  Ultimately, I'd like to see the keyboard work on the PC, as well as one of the thumbsticks work as a mouse pointer.  I'd be incredibly happy if that worked out.

You might want to read that product page more carefully.  They mean you (from your Xbox 360 with your messenger kit) chatting with friends (who are either on Xbox 360 or Windows based PC's).  Not your PC.  It would be nice if they did add the functionality but we'll just have to wait and see.

Ah, good point.  Guess that could be taken either way, the way it's worded.

No worries.  Thanks for even replying.  It's obviously sparked a little bit of discussion relating to the marketing of this thing.

On another note, I'm starting to look at the Wiimote PC Managed C# code from the Channel9 guys. http://channel9.msdn.com/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=291133 .  I've identified the XBox360 Controller plugged into the PC as VendorID 1118 and ProductID 654.  Given some time, if I can find any, going to see if it's not possible to build a X360Controller Managed code library like the Wiimote one.  I suspect that the raw data coming off the controller will include the Chatpad keystrokes.

Also, the XNA Framework SDK does not have any chatpad functionality in the current documentation.

Oh yeah, does anyone at Microsoft even read this forum?

So, yawn, I'm sure, but the 360 pads aren't HID compliant. Found out from some open source Linux driver code.  Meh.

Re: MS: Why doesn't Chatpad work with XBox controller plugged into PC?
There's a post in this forum with a FAQ on the chatpad and messenger kit that indicates that the MS devs don't place pc driver support high on the list of needs but that it's not ruled out.  Sounds like a nice PR answer that basically means don't hold your breath.  I don't feel that the false advertising or deceitful marketing claim holds water.  It doesn't state anywhere that it's intended for use on any platform besides the 360 console.

That being said, thechnically there is NO reason why it wouldn't work.

Kev - check out GlovePIE for the WiiMote.  I played with it for a while but I was using Vista at the time and it didn't play nice with my bluetooth adapter, especially when the 360 wireless receiver was connected.  Driver conflict with the wireless stacks.  I've since switched back to XP (driver issues were a killer in vista, specially since I'm a bleeding edge tech type of guy) but got too caught up in other stuff to see what kind of results I'd get from glovepie.  There's another wii controller app out there too, and someone wrote an app to incorporate it so that you can play half life 2 and CS:Source with the wii mote.  I just may try to get it running when the next HL episode comes out...

Anyway - I haven't had time to check the XNA documentation, I'm studying for my CCNA and it's pain in the a$s to say the least...

I'll be checking in here and in a few other places that I'm sure the mods would disapprove of...

On that note, there are folks in a few of the "usual places" that have taken the chatpad apart, and they may be motivated and smart enough to make headway on this front..

Of course MS could be real nice and just give us what we want and make our lives easier (not to mention letting us really get our money's worth)

should be top of their priority list... im using my 360 controler with wow atm and developing a very compeditive ui/driver thats in line with the new UI rules... Making this chatpad work in xp/vista could be the final thing to make me put in more effort and possibly publish my design...

at the moment im compeditivly raiding with the controler in a SSC guild with no performance issues at all

most popular online game in the world on the 360 could be a soon reality. if only they get this working on pc for me to finish my work.

Thanks for the GlovePIE suggestion. I'll have a looksee...  Ok. Had a looksee.. Interesting, but source would be helpful.  Meh.

I saw that faq.  I'd prefer an 'official' reply from MS about it.  I'd never posted on here before and now it's pretty clear they don't read, or if they do, don't reply on the forums.  S'fine.  Can't build a site like theconsoletracker.com expecting MS to do the right thing by it's customers.  I'm a coder.  I know the kind of things those guys are up against.  I don't doubt there's seven stages of bureacracy between the hardware team and the hardware driver team.

I think these inquiries and a user-based solution are better sought out in other forums or msdn/channel 9/xna.

Thanks for the input.  I'll post back here if I find anything worth while out on the intertron.

BTW.  The chatpad is a really nice accessory.  I don't even notice it's there when I'm playing.  The backlight works great and it looks/works very well in the dark.
