I'm a puzzle nerd. I like trying to solve them, and I like making them.

Here's a simple enigma for you to ponder this weekend:

SJQLO DYBBP FBPDH XYMQZ VTFAC JKATQ WFGPN ROOVA LWMFC BWVMO VMVWH GVVUR VPJEW VTESQ SQLNQ U

You already know the key.

Time's running out.

I tried looking at this at five am when I was leaving for work. My brain couldnt handle it pre-coffee. Now that I have had two cups and are completely woken up. Nope, still can't handle it. Good luck everyone else.

"Live or die, make your choice."

Better now?  :) It's a little less serious than that, but it is a time-limited challenge.

There is a clue on how to solve it in the original post...

What team played in Bletchley Park?

I figured it out! Although it was pretty hard and took some serious workings.

Lesson time! The Enigma machine (referenced in his original post by him using that term) is a cipher machine used since the 1920. It was most famously used by the Germans before and during WWII.

Dan also gave a big hint when he cleverly hid "What team played in Bletchley Park?" in light gray color font in his reply. Bletchley Park was the location of the United Kingdom's main codebreaking establishment. Codes and ciphers of several Axis countries were deciphered there, most famously the Enigma.

How I went about solving the puzzle was finding an Enigma simulator, pluggin in the letters O X and M as keys, then putting in the code he placed in the original post.

It was a lot of fun Dan. You definitely need to do some more puzzles.

Well done, Dweezle! I'm not a big war buff, but I am a fan of Alan Turing and the Bletchley team -- how they broke the German codes was incredible, and the fact that they kept it all quiet was even moreso. I want to visit Bletchley Park someday.  I sort of have a "puzzle tour of England" brewing in my head.

My wife said it was cute that I thought someone would solve it at all, so thanks for winning me that argument.  :)

No problemo. I find stuff like this facinating as well. I knew some about the Enigma and about it being cracked, but learned a great deal trying to solve this riddle. Puzzle Tour of England? Sounds interesting.

So...yeah. We promised in the FAQ that our site would be up before the end of 2007, but now we have a hard launch date: Monday, November 12. Point your browser to www.oxmonline.com at the beginning of next week and we will finally be able to show you what we've been up to.

I know some forum posters have been really looking forward to us having a functioning website again. (Let's just leave it politely there and not mention the people who threaten to cancel their magazine subscription because we don't have a free website to go along with it.) And we've gotten a lot of "what's taking so long?" with it, too. I think I tried to explain this earlier, but it's not like snapping your fingers. We wanted to do a site that would be representative of the magazine and give you what you would expect, yet let us do new creative things too, and not just be a dumping ground for print content.

We will launch with a sampling of reviews, for instance, but eventually we do want to have all of them archived and searchable. All of them, back to 2001. But that will take a while, so we just did a handful to get started. Ryan also posted recent and newsworthy preview content, but we realize nobody wants to read a ton of old previews for games that are already out.  :)

You will also see a lot of features archived from the past year or so. I would ask that anybody who said "I can read everything in OXM on the web" to check those stories out, because I'm calling your bluff. I think you probably don't realize what you've missed, but here's your opportunity to catch up. Some features, like the Epic Journey, have alternate photos that didn't run in the magazine. In fact, almost all the pictures in that online feature are different from the print edition. Just the last handful are repeats.

You will also be able to find archived Message Center, 3X Power-Up, Ask Dr Gamer, 2000 Pennies, and other departments online over time, though right now, they are also in various states of completion. Like, 2000 Pennies will be up in full, but Ask Dr Gamer is just getting archived. And there's a few extra 3X Power-Ups online that didn't appear in print, too.

For other original stuff, we have some cool plans for the first week, and we will be blogging as well. The forums will remain here -- we just link to them and have a nice plug for them on the home page -- and the podcast will eventually move to live on our main site, but oxmpodcast.com is the plan for launch and a little while after. Again, we just don't have infinite resources and the maintenance joins our daily magazine duties, so we can't do everything we want to do right away. It'll take time to develop.

Right now we're ironing out last-minute bugs over the weekend. But Monday November 12 is the solid launch date.

Read the FAQ, punk.

LAWLZ!

Speaking of which, the FAQ will now live on our own site, and I'll just link to it from the forums. It will be easier to maintain.

Great puzzle Dan!.... I only wish I had tried solving it instead of finishing reading the other posts.... oh well, I would have got the enigma hint but wouldn't have caught the park one.... I would have just searched for an enigma sim and tried various breakers until I got it...would have taken me longer to think to put in oxm...... what was that they once said about Albert.....

Congrats Dan and OXM on the news. I'm definitely looking forward to it. It's been a long time coming. Sounds like it will actually take advantage of the medium instead of just being a reprint of the magazine. Kudos.
