I have had my 360 since september 06 and i have had no previous problems with it. My warranty has run out and i can no longer play. When i start my console up i get a black screen that advises me to ring customer support. I have tried replacing all the cables and playing without a hard drive but it still dosen't work. I read that E74 is something about the encoder chip but i am unsure. I like playing my 360 but this has annoyed me for too long, i don't see thousands of PS3's breaking down around the world. All my friends 360's have had problems aswell and its gone beyond a joke. Microsoft get your act together, sure sony has no good games but atleast their consoles work.  A few questions:

1. What exactly is E74 related to?

2. Will i have to get this reparied or can i fix it myself?

3. Do i get the extended warranty for having a red light or will i have to pay for it?

If that does not work you will most likely will have to call into Microsoft at 1-800-4MY-XBOX and talk with a tech.. they might need to setup a repair.

Here is some info about paying for a repair

This one is if you are in warranty- If we repair your Xbox 360 within the original warranty period, you will receive either the balance of your original warranty, or 90 days, whichever is longer.  In addition, we will pay for the shipping both ways.

This one is if you are out of warranty - If we repair your Xbox 360 after the warranty period has expired, while you will be responsible for the repair costs, you will receive either the balance of your original warranty (if it has not yet expired for all conditions), or one year, whichever is longer.

Basicilly if you pay for a repair you will also get a One Year Warranty on whatever console you get back

hi to tired to go into to much detail but ive just got error 74 also this evening im gonna look into it more after had lots of sleep but im sure i read microsoft extended warranty to 3 years because of all the problems im not certain but will look into this further and find out what error 74 means but my 360 sounds quiet now as if hard drive knackered cheers and any more info would be great.

I am just getting my box back for the same problem.  From what I read E74 is a graphics chip error. It makes sense because most people who get the error have checkered type video right before it happens.  The screen will go completely green as well.

Xbox doesnt warrenty that, even though there are just as many as the three lights that break.  I had to pay $100 for it to be fixed and I sent mine in on the 19th of October and should be recieving a new one today.  Just call Xbox and get the repair set up. You cannot fix this problem.  $100 is still cheaper than $350.

no offence friend 100 dollars may be cheaper but when under warranty this should include all aspects of the 360 graphics are any other fault and too many people are having faults i keep getting info off friends online about there 360 red light faults to many problems i think this needs sorting microsoft.

mmmmm very strange now 360 is working again turn it on and off 5 or 6 times then it fired up no screen errors or picture problems then next time turn 360 on do same again then it fires up hmmmm lets just hope it doesnt catch fire (pardon the pun)cant be any worse than not working at all will see how it goes but when i thimk back on playing cod 3 on line sometimes picture would stick and id have to respawn to fix picture.my 360 may go off altogher soon ill see what happens.just keeping u all informed goodbye for now signing off fireantguy.

nope its broke games come on but picture is blurred and i still managed to play cod 3 and kick butt.well what you expect from a high ranked officer like myself.

18 month old 360 + E74 error + £60 repair cost + no refund on xbox live while being repaired for 20 days = New PS3 customer!

MS you need to sort this out, you have a great console with great games, but when  loyal customers are made to pay for microsofts hardware faults it takes the all the fun out of your games machine and people start looking elswhere for more reliable gaming.

The standard 12 month warranty is all good and well but when there are literally hundreds of people with the same problem, through no fault of their own, the warranty needs to be waived and free repairs given.

Im going to get a refund on my £60 from microsoft just out of principle and I will not give up on it!

 

I have the E 74 Error as well, I looked it up and supposedly it is the scanner chip above the A/V cable that fried.  I went online to request service, and find out how much it is going to cost, and according to the Website, my 360 warranty ran out on 9/8/07.  Does anyone know if the warranties aren't one year from the purchase date anymore?  I bought mine in late Feb, because we had to wait for our tax refund.  There's no WAY it's been a year... however, I'm in the army, I bought mine from the PX...  I don't have a reciept anymore (we've been shipped to Germany since then, and because of a lack of housing lived in 5 places since we got here!) but I do have the carbon from the check I paid for the 360 with...  Plus, AoI is coming out in a few days, and I WON'T get my 360 repaired in time for that... I'm using my wife's right now, but we both play PSU.

I wonder if it would be better to just buy a core system?  does anyone know how likely it is that the xbox live people will believe me that I bought the xbox less than a year ago?

I purchased my xbox 360 06/24/2006...so its about a year and half old now.  I was getting block squares (checkered pattern) and other graphic glitches on my screen the past week when playing COD 4 and Assassins Creed. 

 

Anyway problem went away for a few days after unplugging and replugging everything in, but it came back later today (tried different cables, different monitor, different resolutions....)

 

I called microsoft and will be sending it in for repair.  I don't get why this isn't considered a *hardware failure*. 

 

Ironic thing is that moments after talking on the phone I got the one red light and E74 error message. 

 

I figure it will be 1-2 months before I get my 360 back so I went out tonight and just got a core system as a backup for when this happens again in the future.

 

It sucks I'm hooked that much to my 360 that I dropped $280 tonight, plus another $100 to repair my old system...but its still nothing compared to what I used to have to pay for upgrading my PC to keep up with games.

hi all again i sent my xbox away for repair and it ran out of the 1 year warranty while in transit but microsoft repaired it for free still as it was in warranty when in transit.i recieved my 360 back after 3 1/2 weeks and its broke again 3 rings of death now it was the motherboard that they replaced last but for it to be bust again in less than a week is ridiculous and im starting to get fed up now i was wanting my 360 for over xmas for my sons xmzs games we have bought fat chance now thanks v much microsoft.

E 74 secondary error code 1022,  MFR date 2006-01-26. I bought it from HMV 04.03.06
Im told the cost is between 50-60 quid but cant be confirmed untill i actually pay ??? Why is this not covered under the 3 ext warrenty? its so prolific and widespread. Its a design flaw or common fault MS should be accountable. My advice is put this about the forums, complain to tading standards and make a big fuzz and try to get more coverage. Arrgh Im so angry, im skint at the moment cant afford to fix the Box. Has anyone managed to get a one red light E74 out of warrenty fixed for free by MS? Anyone know how to force the one red light error into the 3red light. Towel doesnt work (not that i have tried it)

Around $100 for repairs, and youll get a refurbished Zephyr which will run about 1-5 months before it has another failure- yaya.

I left my xbox 360 off for about a day after getting the message, then it worked for a few days without the error message. Then I would get the message every once in a while, but one weekend it just would never go away, so I sent it in for repair, it's been at the repair center for about 4 days now, hope I get it back sometime next week...

I just got this error today! Sent it out for repairs and coughed up $100 for it.

Just got this today and I'm really pissed off.  My warranty ended 6 weeks ago .. now I wonder why it's 1 year warranty??  Oh wait .. because that's how long it takes to break and fully knowing this they come up with their bs 1 year warranty to scam us out of our money.  I really don't feel like giving up $100 for something that's not my fault.  Seeing as how they will send me back something that will most likely break again sooner rather than later, I'm not sure if I should just go buy a core system and just put my hardrive in that and have it last longer....

I have fixed the e74 error unfortunately i cannot post details on how to fix this problem. So if you need more technical help on fixing the e74 error and you are out of warranty pm me.

that's what i did..and purchased a 2 year warranty from the store i bought it from...forget paying $100 for something that'll only self-destruct in about 2 weeks after you receive it..

This is blog that some guy made about poor service from Amazon. You know what happened? The CEO of Amazon found the posting contacted the customer personally, replace his product free of charge, and even said that they would change their packing to prevent future occurances.

M$ doesn't want to shell out a buck. Error 74 is just as common as the 3 red lights, but they don't care. They'd rather make us pay $100 to fix their mistakes. Some one should take legal action.

My Pus lux 360 that I had fixed for the 3 red flashing lights 6months ago has now got the E-74, E-79, E-73 errors they change around from time to time my extended warrenty ran out and they want me to pay $160 Aus to fix ..My 360 only works when I leave it on the one red flashing light for about 5mins and then reboot it maby twice or more  reboots but i goes.. It's like it's got to warm up.. But any way Here's what I think about Micro soft..

 Maybe the XboxTeam were Hire by sony to crush Microsoft and it Pus lux 360..  The first Xbox was the most reliable  console and that is where it counts . Then came the kiddy slave made console  of the 360 Made with second hand chips and wires  that were throwen out by sony.. And I think sony is crap! Then I won't say what  Microsoft is!  Every one that purcased a crapy Xbox 360 should get a free upgraded model with life time warranty or their money back.. Microsoft should have a list that can circle the entire earth (Twice over) of all the people that purcased one of their after market crappy consoles.

Damn straight, my ***-spawn xbox 360 has given my nothing but trouble. I am on about my 6th or 7th xbox 360 and my original xbox still works fine. After getting a auto-update for crackdown my 360 wigs out and displays the "e74" error message...WTF...Now the good people at the microsoft call centre wont/cant tell me whats wrong. I did their suggestions of removing hard drive/controllers etc but that did squat. Congratulations to microsoft for making the most ureliable gaming machine ever....makes me wonder why I pay to play on xbox live when my machine spends most of its time in the shop getting repaired. If I take my car to a garage for repairs they tell me what was wrong and how they repaired it....microsoft wont tell me f@#k all.....damn you Bill Gates.....c u in ***.
