We want subtitle support !
Most of us were anxiously waiting for native DivX support on the XBox 360. For us foreign movies enthusiasts, or simply non-english speaking people, subtitle support was so obvious that this was we couldn't imagine DivX playback without it. What a disappointment !

Not only the console lacks this basic feature, but it is now a real pain to configure third-party tools such as TVersity to get proper subtitle support ... as far as I can tell, situation is now much worse, from the whole movie playing point of view.

I really hope this will be implemented in a next update. Some smart guy at MS decided that this feature was not popular, but many of us definitely DON'T AGREE !

I totally agree, subtitle support should be obvious, let's just hope someone comes up with a solution soon. I don't have the patience to wait until the spring update.

Re: We want subtitle support !

Yeah, subtitle support was looked over and that sure sucks.  I hope they will add .srt support in the next update, or even before, but I'm not holding my breath for it.  I guess I will continue to use my soft modded Xbox for my import videos.

Subtitle support should be so easy to implement... and it would be a feature also welcomed in english speaking countries.

Microsoft please respect your non-english speaking customers.

Re: We want subtitle support !
Isnt it a little bit weird that microsoft does not support subtitles whatsoever???

On xbox live, the movie service offers literally no subtitle support whatsoever.

On the divx/xvid  no subtitles support whatsoever.

Even playing files off the disc driver does not support subtitles whatosever.

Can microsoft explain to the majority of us deaf and hard of hearing paying m$ customers why in the *** they are not supporting subtitles for the many deaf and hard of hearing people out there?

Why am I with xbox 360 is beyond me. i am furious. The fact that I pay for this service is what gets me the most.

*** you microsoft.

And add me for .srt support as well.  Media Player uses it, so just allow the 360 to use it too!

I'd like .srt support too. It is the main reason why I now use my main PC (nexto the 360) in dual screen mode so I can just simply watch films via KMPlayer on my Sammy 32" HDTV. The media support and interface on the 360 just looks poor with its truncated filenames and lack of subs support.

Hell I'm still trying to work out why my 360 is showing my current media (both video and mp3s) with their old filenames rather than their current ones. It's like its storing old file metadata for some reason.

Def need sub support so I can stop messing about hardcoding them into the avi.

Also, I agree iwth you on the media interface thru the dash, it uses such an unnecessarily large font that half of the filenames are cut off. Scrolling through my music list all you get is Beatles -... Beatles - ... Rolling... etc etc. Its a right pain.

With regards to storing old names, I think it takes its filenames from whatever is stored in WMP (I.E. stored in the ID3 tag). Changing the filename wont change whats in the ID3 tag, so you need to go into WMP (or any tag editor) and change them through that. Make sure WMP actually updates its info cos half the time it doesnt bother with me (I mean WHY does WMP have to be so damn difficult to use? It just does what it wants half the time!)

Should sort things out, I know I need to do it for half of my collection but im being lazy atm!

Assunto: Re: We want subtitle support !

This should be delayed until the next XBOX major update. It should come seamsly just like any other video codec update.

It is not a big deal to implement...

I don't own a xbox(I plan to buy one soon) but I do own a ps3.. I have had much more sucess for ps3 media server with subtitles.. that program works great and you can select transcode options on the video select screen. Did you try that? Anyways it would be nice if consoles whether it is a xbox360 or ps3 had FULL divx instead of a peice of crap

The original post was made in 2007 it is now 2009. 2 years and no subtitle support. Come on Microsoft I pay for this service and love it, what about the hearing impaired folks, and people who wants subtitles? What kind of relationship is the Microsoft don't treat me like a wh*re.

Re: We want subtitle support !
Microsoft would have to spend money on this, probably a lot.  Times have been (and will be) tough, so it's low on their list.

For example, WMP11's job now is just to throw a video stream at the 360.  With a seperate subtitle file to send, some sort of coordinated move of both files would have to happen, like the whole small subtitle file first then stream the video.  At that point, an enhanced player in the 360 would put the two parts together.  Not cheap, rebuilding both ends of the system.

Embedded subtitles that are buried in the AVI (not burned in) will take less work, but might involve more royalties paid to someone like Divx.  That'd just involve the 360 end, but still might be a long wait.

I'd say convert all videos to MP4 with the subtitles burned in.  MP4 from Badaboom (and the right video card) gets done quickly, and as long as the source isn't MPEG-2 the quality is acceptable (to me).  WMV is slightly bloated compared to MP4, except for REALLY short files.  Purists who refuse to convert for fear of losing quality just have to live without subtitles.

Oddly, I have read where people want the freedom to not have subtitles burned in and just use them as needed, yet NEED subtitles every time.  That's just strange...

I don't see how every DVD player in today's market that supports Divx/Xvid along with .srt and .idx/.sub files is able to do this for a fraction of the cost player but the Xbox 360 which costs hundreds does not.  Xbox dropped the ball on this one.  Not only for people that are hard of hearing/deaf but also for all of the foreign films out there that are only in their native language with English subtitles.

Re: We want subtitle support !
Well, here's the deal: Microsoft added streaming playback to the 360 a year after it was introduced, but did it in a way that wouldn't make streaming interfere with their other media plans.  My post on a 2,000 file limit came and went with no sign that the issue will be dealt with, like they'd prefer that you have just so many videos on-hand and get the rest from some online vendor like, oh, Xbox LIVE.

They started with just WMV streaming, then grudgingly added divx and xvid and other MP4 variants.  Still just the single streamed file, no separate subtitle file supported.  You are allowed to MAKE a streamable video with burned-in subtitles if you have the tools, but most people don't want to bother.  Could be laziness, could be that the video in question is only going to be seen once and then deleted so no extra work beyond acquiring it is wanted.  Can't say for sure.

Microsoft owns the ball and has a firm grip on it.  No MKV for you unless they decide it's OK.  And I'm thinking they'll do MKV long before they revamp how streaming works to support separate subtitle files...
