Busted Disc Drive Club

will9307 06-14-2007, 4:32 PM

Just like the 3 red light club, this club is for those who had a broken disc drive on their 360.  Just post what happened and what you did.

My disc drive broke in the middle of playing Call of Duty 3 in March.  It made a weird buzzing noise, and said rite there the disc was unreadable.  Eventually, the disc tray refused to stay closed.  I sent it in, and got a new console a week or two later.

I never got three red lights, so its a totally different problem... post your stories! Thanks!

I seem to be having this problem.

My 360 has never had any red lights or made any strange noises,  but right now it won't read any discs and I am waiting on a coffin from Microsoft.

I feel voilated by them,  of that there can be no doubt.  I wonder if brought my 360 in its current condition to a gamestop,  how much money could I get for it?  I got the cash to buy a PS3 but I just don't want one.  I want a 360 but the junk hardware is making it very difficult to own one.

Who am I complaining to?

I just found this statment in the support section:

After you verify that the date and time are set correctly on Xbox 360 console, verify that the console does not require that you reset the date and time every time that you turn it on. This issue may be the cause of the Xbox console not recognizing the disc media.

My 360 is doing that,  the time resets to 6:00 am every time I turn if off.

Who am I complaining to?

my 360 is being weird recently, ocasionally, if it has been running a while, it wont let me close the disc, it will shut then open automatically, it usually does this 3 times then reads the disc, so far hasnt been a problem apart from wasting time, sometimes however it sticks closed, so fix this i just spam out the (A) button on open/close disctray until it works, but tbh im worried its just gunna bugger itself up more. Warrenty almost run out so might have to get it sorted.

I can hear it make some kind of clicking noise, doesn't matter what game, and then it sounds like it stops spinning. Most of the games still play, but the music will drop out or some of the graphics will drop out. (ie. playing Forza 2, disc stops spinning? and the track disappears for a few seconds. I was driving on a black strip instead of a track) Usually if I pop out to the dashboard and start the game again, it will start spinning again, but it goes out again after a while...randomly it seems. No damage to the disks, very strange. Any ideas?
So what do you want? A fricken medal?!

My CD Tray just recently started to not  stay closed when a disk is inserted.  The trick to get it to take for me is that when it closes the powerlight will blink as its trying to acquire the disc.  After a few seconds it ejects the disc tray.  when the disc tray is about 2 inches out I hit the eject button and it closes back up and it works after that.  It does it for nearly every disc doesn't matter as long as there is a disc in the drive.  I've got my 360 is a well ventilated area, and its pretty much sat in that spot the whole time I've owned it (about 8 months now).

Mine has gone. it just wont stay shut after I turned it on one day. Heaven forbid, I do anything serious. Just turned the git on.

Microsoft want me to pay £80 as its out of warranty. I dont want a PS3 but if it had games out, I would buy one tomorrow as this is my 3rd 360 now which is apalling. What do we put up with this? They claim its 5% error - all my friends are out at least their second 360. Microsoft - you are tnot being up front about all this.

Well I just went to turn mine on, there was a disc in there - when it started i heard a loud kinda crunch sound. Like it was trying to spin but then got caught. I opened the drive, no damage to the cd, but after putting it back in, i get a disc unreadable error.

Guh.

When the XBOX 360 Console is cold, the Game DVD will be read, but the graphics are not loaded correctly and you hear a strange noise. After 1 hour playing, you hear that the DVD Drive interrupts spinning. And a few minutes later i get the message :"to play this disc put it in an XBOX 360 Console". No matter what Game DVD i put into the drive, i get this message, or the disc will be loaded but after a few minute's the screen goes black and i get the message that the disc can't be read.

I send now my XBOX 360 to Repair Center, my Warranty is intact.

Occasionally my disc drive will make some strange noises;however, it still works fine. On Gears of War, the drive will click and then I'll get the "Disc is unreadable" error. It's the only game that does it. Once I restart the system, it plays fine. It only happens about once a month.

Does it always happen with gears or just some of the time?

My original 360 started with a brief click here and there which eventually turned into a buzzing sound which shortly thereafter turned into a grinding noise.  Seeing as how the dvd sits practically on top of the gpu which by all accounts gets extremely hot within seconds, its no wonder that the 360s dvd drive's are plagued with problems.

Purchased Original 360 console: Dec 2006

Problems begin: 3-4 months later with: E74 error, constant freezing, few more months later dvd grinding sound.

Sent in for "repairs": June 01, 2007

Recieved refurbished back: June 18, 2007, DEAD upon arrivial ("Unplayable disk" error!!)

Currently awaiting for another "coffin" to arrive.

100% defect rate!

My problem is allot like will9307's first post. I've been playing a borrowed copy of oblivion and periodically my system has been making this loud drive noise (it sounds like the spinning disk is making contact with the tray). I then get the disc unreadable error. If I restart my system it doesn't happen again for a wile. The first time this happened was right when Gears came out. It happened just once but now it is getting more and more common. It has gotten to the point where I cant play 30 mins of Oblivion. I have the extended warranty from Microsoft.

I have 3 questions if anyone can help.

1. Can you send a system in that isn't 100% broken? Are they likely to test it and not see the problem and sent it back?

2.  If they replace the system what happens to my massive XBLA game library?!?

3. Similar to number 2 what about video content I have purchased on XBL?

Thanks so much guys :)

*edit* be warnned SwizzleStick83 thats how it started for me.

Skiz,

#1 I dont know the answer to that.

#2 and #3 If you keep your hard drive and they send you a new console, any content you purchase on Live will be available on your new box as long as you are online and connected to live.  The media verifys with both the harddrive and the console, however, they are linked using the live account.  Therefore, unless you are online, you wont be able to use the media you paid for.  Which stinks.
