Unofficial GamerParents code of conduct for Live and Forums

I'm not sure how this will be received, but I feel that it needs to be talked about at the least.  There have already been a lot of negative threads here, but I think we all (and be "we", I mean the GamerParents) want to see the XBL community improve, and so I would like to take a few moments to address how I think we can do that.  Please feel free to comment or add to these thoughts if you see any oversights.

GamerParents Unofficial Code of Conduct

1.  Always treat your oponents in games with respect.  Never, EVER, resort to name calling or chewing out someone.

2.  Always say "good game" after a match, not just when you win by 1 or 2.  Every time is right.  Especially after a humbling loss.  It is afterall... just a game.

3.  Treat kids with respect.  Don't use language worse than theirs when asking them not to use strong language.  If you've asked and they decline mute them.  Problem solved.  How can we help change the culture if we aren't part of the solution and only feed into the problem?

4.  No cheating/gamesaving/glitching.  Let's be better than that.

I think if we start with these 4 things, then we can make a difference on Live.  We can gain respect by giving it, and have some great online fun.

Agree?  Disagree?

This has been an unofficial creedo for me, and I hope you all will take it up as well.

Let's also try to keep this free of "funny" suggestons and keep it an open discussion.  Thanks.

I think #3 is one of the key issues.  How many threads exist on xbox.com that are adults vs. kids?

These should be "DaDs laws", much like the Miller Lite "Man Laws".

ok i get no cheating (obviously, no idea how i would though.) but gamesaving? glitching? sorry you lost me there. i dont know how gamesaving (ie saving your game unless i am mistaken.) is bad conduct and i have no idea what glitching is. any explanations would be welcome.

That is correct.  Mass Effect, one sitting, no deaths.

Actually Gamesaving is using someone else's save to boost your own achievement score.

Glitching is finding flaws in the code of a game and using it to your advantage, essentially cheating.

To piggyback off of what Psycho is saying, we are raising children to do what is right.  It's the same reason we teach our kids to play hard in sports, but play fair.  If we get caught cheating, and it doesn't have to be our own kids, we are sending a message to everyone that we are a group of cheaters.  As parents, it's about us setting the example and encouraging (not demanding) others to do the same.

He's referring to cheating to boost your gamerscore.  Some folks use gamesaving to open achievements on their profile that they didn't earn.  Glitching would be manually manipulating your net connection to cause lagging to gain an unfair advantage over the competition or taking advantage of unintended development glitches to do the same.  That's pretty general, but maybe someone else could expand on it.(*Edit-Nevermind, I'm too slow and got beaten to the punch!*)

Also, awesome topic, ej!  I agree that change is impacted one individual at a time and we can spread our influence as far as it can reach through our actions.  What type of public humiliation are we planning for those that give us a bad name?Stick out tongue [:P]  All jokes aside, I am very proud to be a GamerParent and applaud anything that gives our group more structure especially as we continue to grow in numbers.

This is great, I have started a Code of Conduct for the DaDS Clan and you are hitting on the same topics I am hitting.  Nice thread ethan.

Would you mind if I used some of your wording and ideas for DaDS?  I want the same values for us becuase if it weren't for GamerParents then there would be no DaDS.

These are real good.  What I would like to see and it may not be possible are those that stick to these codes start defusing possible confrontations among teammates.  I notice if you sense tension and you crack a joke or distract them, everyone settles down and play.

Sure thing.  I original wrote them a few days ago as the gamerdads Live CoC and thought if interested it would be the unofficial CoC for this forum.

That's perfect CPsycho, I didn't know there was a wiki entry on Gamesaving.  I'm #197 on the Gamesaver-less unofficial leaderboard linked in there.

ethan, this is a good list.  It's hard to make an impact on all of XBL but we all can in our own small part.

Thanks, and I agree, it shouldn't be limited to just this group, but we are as organzied as anyone so it seems a good place to start.  I also like TMOG's idea that we should put out fires when we can, and humor is often the best remedy for that.

The best place is for us to start here.

Perhaps if we ever got that icon this could be the criteria for it! Yes [Y]Smile [:)]

This is really good stuff, ethanjude.  All the GamerParents and DaDS I've met online have always demonstrated great sportsmanship and treated other gamers with respect, but it's a great idea to get these principles on the record.  Is it worthwhile to see if Trixie would pin your CoC to the top of the GamerParents forum?

I don't think comparing gaming to under age smoking and drinking is a fair analogy.  It is called being a good sport no matter how the other team plays.  Typically, there are only one or two bad eggs on a server, if that.  No since in not being a good sport cuz of a couple of rotten players.

Plus playing a rated M game if you are under 17 (if that is what you are referring to) isn't illegal.
