How are tactics stars calculated?
On both campaign and battle missions I generally get 5 stars on speed and power, but on average 2-3 stars on tactics. Whats up with that?

Tactics appear to be ranked on how much damage you deal in comparison to how much you take. Using unit strengths and weaknesses can get you a great tactics rating. I wondered the same thing until I found it in the 'how to play' section in the pause menu.

By the way, I always 5 star power and get 5 on tactics most of the time, but only because I play slow (my speed is usually 1 - 3).

Yeah, it's how much damage you deal compared to how much you take. I don't know whether it's a case of merely taking one from the other or whether a ratio is applied, but your goal should be the same either way. Incidentally, I think to 'five-star' Tactics on the very first level requires you to take no damage! Seems as though that's where the real challenge is (full five-stars on Standard Campaign is worth 40gs, so I guess that make sense.)

Re: How are tactics stars calculated?

Here are my thoughts after playing the Demo.  I just noticed this game and have never played AW.  Keep in mind I have only messed around with this XBLA game for less than 30 minutes and I am sure a developer that has spend months on it will be much more informative.

I believe Power is based off the amount of damage you do (number of vehicles destroyed and HP/Unit).

Tactics is based off the damage you receive (number of Vehicles lost and damage at the end of the Mission on your remaining units).

I just played the first two missions.

1st play through ever for this game on M1: goofing around learning the units S1, P5, T3

2nd play though on M1: just trying to finish fast S5, P5, T3

3rd play though on M1: trying for Tactics S1, P5, T5

Just a note to get the Tactics 5 Star I only used the Scout for Combat and I picked up both Health packs.

Now all three Statistics read 5 Stars.  It should be fairly easy to get 5 stars on all the missions with two plays.

Since you're likely to kill all the enemy units before finishing the mission anyway, the most important thing for a 5 star Tactics rating is to minimize the damage you take.  Move your units to just outside the attack radius of enemy units; they'll often approach and let you get the first hit.  Make use of the Invulnerability CO ability.  When you get access to artillery, just hang back and cheap out the computer.  (I haven't gotten to air units yet so I don't know how I'll handle those. :)

most units can't attack air units, so they + artillery make for an awesome invincible army when facing the not so bright campaign AI.

Make use of the Invulnerability CO ability.

It´s very powerful against the AI. When it´s its turn, they still attack you, even if you are invincible. So you kill many units in your turn with your power, and enemy kills many more in its turn. I love doing that Big Smile [:D]

Re: How are tactics stars calculated?

Hello everyone,

In case you haven't read the other threads, I am Mohawk Dan, the Associate Community Manager of Sierra Online. Jennifer, the Associate Producer of Commanders, has been very vocal in her responses to many of the questions being presented lately. Here is yet another informative reply:

Jennfier replies:

"This is being discussed in another thread as well.  Here's what I said over there:

The Tactics rating is based on damage dealt compared to damage taken.  Two things to consider here are terrain bonuses as well unit type.  To minimize your damage, try to use units that are strongest against whatever you are attacking.  For example, scouts are strong against infantry and weak against planes and tanks, so your best bet is to use a plane or tank when attacking a scout rather than try to gang up on them with your infantry.

If your tactics score seems low, try playing a little slower and being a bit choosier about where you are fighting and what units you are using.  That should help!"

snap can you explain this.  i seriously have no idea how you make your guys untouchable.  is that something that comes in a later lever because i am only trying the 2nd and 3rd levels....i refuse to move on untill i get 5 stars in tactics for those levels.

I taught Eyedea to punch kids in the face.

You will unlock new commanders as you play through.  Alec has the firing frenzy ability, which is great against infantry.  The next one is Laerina(i forget how its spelled) and she has an invincible ability.  Also remember to use the B button on enemy troops to see their movement and attacking range.

And air units are easily handled by the anti-air unit.  :)

(Already posted, doh!)

Late to the party on this game, heh... I'm finding level 1 the hardest to 5-star tactics. WTF. Huh? [:^)]

Love the fact that the stars are cumulative, though. :D

85 200/200
05 250/250
01 235/235
01 215/215
01 150/200

You have to take NO damage.  Save before every attack and reload if you don't get critical hits.  A critical hit should destroy the enemy unit before it counterattacks.
