OK, I`m finished with everything on the 2nd map except the battle at Caldberg and retrieving the 2nd half of the mugin gem. my question is: do I have to just fight my way through the city to get the gem or is there something I`m missing?

can you help me out then ?

 its still telling me to collect kegs and return them to the innkeeper, i cant find anymore.

you have to sneak through the city to get the gem before you start the battle.

You dont need to get them all, ist just a side quest to get you more money. 

 

As for getting the second half of the gem, I played it sneaky.  Fight when you have to but if you are careful you shouldnt have too much trouble.  Dont run around take your time and the round about path to your target.

I just ran in and killed everything in my path, you don't have to sneak when everyone is dead

This is why this game is so great, you can do the missions in different ways. You can sneak your way through or alternatively kill anything moves!  Personally I sneaked through cos it adds a bit of tension trying not to get spotted, and picking off guards one at a time using stealth kills is most satisfying. Quality game.

if your go for the stealth option take the right under the bridge and then there are nets to climb and drop too all the way to the gem you will have to fight a few but not many.

 

for the kegs i found i missed 3 of them but got them eventually. 1 is on the rocks next to the entance on the bottom of your base, exit the gate and go to the rocks on your right there will be a gap which leads you to the barrel.

one in the stream by the lumber mill it is just in the middle of the water.

one in the settlement near caldberg it is next to a house on the cliff edge.

also there are two under the bridge for caldberg.
