Exclusive Rock Band Tracks, Not So Exclusive
Now, I know it's not OXM's fault, but I find it a little disappointing. Some people bought the magazine just to get the tracks, and now they are on sale for 240 points. I know, I know... not allowed to make criticisms on the OXM forums.

I'm actually not disappointed that these tracks are being released. I was almost sure they eventually would be.

I am disappointed that it looks like these three songs are going to be the only DLC next week.

I remember them stressing in the podcast that these tracks would NEVER be available any other way.  Evidently, never is about 2 months long.

Hahaha! Well, I remember that too. That's what is getting me. Here is the article on OXMONLINE:

We love Rock Band. You love Rock Band. So we're giving you a heartfelt post-holiday gift with the February 2008 issue of Official Xbox Magazine — 3 COMPLETELY EXCLUSIVE songs for the game!

Serious? You'd better believe it. The disc bundled with OXM's February 2008 issue contains 3 songs that you'll find ONLY on this disc:

* Freezepop — "Sprøde"

* Bang Camaro — "Rock Rebellion"

* Count Zero — "Shake"

It's a must-buy for any and all Rock Band fans. Repeat after us: 3 ALL-NEW, EXCLUSIVE SONGS! ONLY ON THIS DISC!

To be honest, I don't really care.  Worst thing is that I've never even played the songs.  I listened to the little preview it gives when you highlight the songs.  I didn't like the songs just from the preview and never tried them.

What can I say? We found out the way you found out. We thought they were ours forevers, but we don't actually own the copyright to those tracks. They are property of Harmonix and the bands, so they are legally allowed to do with them as they see fit.

Many times we have exclusive demos...that find their way to Marketplace later on. I guess it's like that. I was hoping they would remain ours forever but there's not much to say other than...oh well. I understand the other side: It's good content, so why wouldn't they let everybody enjoy it?

Hopefully, folks will see the upside: We were able to give them to OXM readers three months earlier than everybody else, and they came free with the magazine they're (hopefully) buying anyway, instead of costing extra cash.

Re: Exclusive Rock Band Tracks, Not So Exclusive
As a subscriber I am just happy that they were free and not .99 dollars each or 2.49 dollars for the bundle. If I paid $9.99 just for the songs that came with the mag I'd be pissed. Also, I'd be pissed at Harmonix for being a bunch of liars and not the mag. They have been lazy the last couple of weeks and gave us 1 Track last Tuesday and then three tracks that they already had made this coming Tuesday. Sounds like the Rock Band DLC is starting to slow down. In fairness, they may have just taken a hiatus on production or some tracks may have gotten caught up in the process. So, far the Rock Band DLC has been pretty stable which is better than we can say for other games.

They could've at least told you guys that it was a limited exclusivity deal.

I can understand this, seeing as some developers are in these bands as well.  They only want to get their music out to the masses.  Wink [;)]

Did you forget the two weeks before 'still alive' 6 grateful dead./ 6 boston tracks. I would hardly say that they are slowing down.

I have never seen any guitars online with artwork on them. Am I the only one taking the time to do this (although danOXM's Frankenstein was amazing, I've never seen it online) or does the artwork just not show up over live. I've done Zakk Wylde's bullseye, Randy Rhoads jackson, EVH black and yellow frankenstraat for my Dimebag avatar, and Buckethead's KFC. Sorry got alittle off track

Dan,

I totally agree with your statement.  I never complain about the free content you guys give.  Just about every issue has something (Gamer Pics, Themes, Other DLC).  If people actually took the time and figured out how much the DLC would cost them to buy from Microsoft, maybe they would not complain.  After all, I buy a magazine to read it.  If I get free stuff with, then it's a BONUS!

The big question comes down to, why are you buying the magazine?  Is it strictly for the free content?  If so, take 12 months of that and add up the MS POINTS you would have to spend to get it.  Does it come to more than the dollar amount of $24.95?  If so, was it worth it?  I would say YES!  Now getting back to my original thought, hey if it's for the content (DLC) then consider the magazine a BONUS.  Either way, it's a win win situation!

Plus, your statement is true...we usually get stuff before anyone else, and in my eyes, that is a total plus!

Keep up the great work on the mag, and keep pumping out that DLC too.  Thanks OXM!

Re: Exclusive Rock Band Tracks, Not So Exclusive
I see what everyone is saying but I can't help but feel robbed by Harmonix. I was so excited to hear we (the subscribers) would be getting some free, exclusive tracks for Rock Band. Especially considering they're all really good. Now I've lost a week in new content. And I agree with the fact that last weeks song (Still Alive) was great, especially because it's free, but ONE TRACK!? Harmonix? What's going on guys? I'm hoping for some discounted 6 song packs or albums soon or maybe some actual exclusive OXM content to make up for it. Despite all this I still love OXM and Harmonix for the great job they've been doing. Keep it up.

Re: Exclusive Rock Band Tracks, Not So Exclusive
Hey guys:

Just a word of note -- those tracks that were on our February issue for Rock Band were guaranteed exclusively for us for a certain amount of unspecified time. We usually do this with specific demos, but for the RB tracks, the length of exclusivity was undetermined other than that we would have them for the duration the February issue was on newsstand and then some. We try to make these deals in order to reward our subscribers with new content first (and hopefully exclusively for a good amount of time) to show that we appreciate your support.

But ultimately, when there's content to be had,  you can't blame a developer/publisher for wanting to capitalize on it. In the case of Harmonix, these guys are putting out new tracks EVERY week (whether it's one track or six -- in the case of the Grateful Dead pack, etc.) and they have to actually program the game to work with new content each of those weeks. They have to put a good amount of work into each track they output every week, so it's incorrect to think of them as being lazy. But, now that our February has been off sale for three months or so -- it was apparently decided that our subscribers and newsstand readers were able to get the jump on leaderboards, etc. well enough in advance.

It was never our intention to misinform any of you into thinking that those RB tracks were indefinitely exclusive to OXM -- we just didn't know exactly when they would go up on Marketplace or if they actually would, seeing that there's already so much content slated to be up there for RB. But, stuff like this serves as a good lesson for us and we'll try to keep you all much more aware about things like this in the future. Thanks for bearing with us. :)

6 tracks one week, 6 tracks the next then 1track the next then 3 tracks that were already made the next. I would say that is  a decelleration on the making of new tracks.

They could be working on an album and decided that they would release theses songs to keep the rest of us busy while they finished up the album.

Huh? It's not like it was a steal or a big deal or something. OXM just got the exclusive tracks, months in advance. I don't think they're going to mention the tracks in a manner more than "Hey we had these, now they're on Marketplace".

Is it really something to get excited over?

haha I just found it really funny in a way.

For however many podcast episodes, we heard the word "NEVER" and "ON MARKETPLACE". Now we're hearing that they knew that they were going up just not exactly when and how long the exclusivity would be for OXM? I think the readers got cheated out of this one.

Nevertheless I appreciate OXM's hard work to get exclusive content etc etc. My favorite magazine by far! I just don't think that they should ever use the word "NEVER" and 3 months later have the Editor in Chief come tell us that they in fact knew it wasn't completely exclusive to OXM.

And I wasn't excited for the fact that they are now on marketplace, heck I don't even own Rock Band -- rather to hear Dan and Ryan's reaction's to these news.

That had been the first disc I have cared about since the DOA3 booster pack. I actually dig the magazine and rarely ever throw the disc in. I just dislike the fact the tracks don't show up as "purchased" in the music store, but that's just my OCD speaking.

I just noticed today that even though I have these from my Demo disc, they still show up in the MUSIC STORE download section as not purchased.  I know I got them free from the disc, but I still would like to see the little check mark saying that i have them.  That way (and yes, I am tired at times) I don't accidentaly download them and get charged for something I got free in the first place.  I wonder if they will fix this minor buggy issue with the marletplace?

Re: Exclusive Rock Band Tracks, Not So Exclusive

it isnt really a bug. you downloaded them from a disc, so why would they show up that you bought them from marketplace? you dont own the songs via marketplace. it isnt just with the songs either, it is the same deal with all downloadable content on the discs that can be found on marketplace.

if there is money to be had, then you can be assured someone is going after it.
