Re: Cracked Disc Problem?

I think I might know why it is doing this.  When the games come out of the 360, they are very hot, but when you snap them into their cases, the circle thing in the middle cracks them eventually because when the cool down the disc changes shape.  Perhaps keep them in a different type case.

Re: Cracked Disc Problem?
This happened to my Forza 2 disc over the weekend. I noticed it on Saturday while taking it out after playing about 3-4 hours straight. It seemed to get slightly longer every time I played it after that. I was able to play it until tonight when it finally stopped reading it, although I could tell the 360 was having trouble reading it and would not boot up if I turned on the system with the disc in the drive. I guess I'll take it back to Gamestop tomorrow and see if they'll exchange it for me.

Re: Cracked Disc Problem?

I've only had two of my disks crack on me. Ultimate Alliance & Gears of War. And the fact I say "only two disks" is bad enough to make anybody wonder why we put up with the crap we do. oh yeah... because PS3 doesnt have any of the games we wanna play! nearly forgot that side of it. And Microsoft and everyone under them know it, so what would they want to do about it? they dont want to give us new disks, or explain why its actually happening. instead they sit back and watch the money roll in. and why not? sounds like a good plan to me......If i was SATAN!

Everyone had different ideas as to why this is happening.....the only one who can really say... is Microsoft. will they? dont expect THAT anytime soon. picture this! a huge open-to-the-public press confrence inwhich all the big heads come down, along with the production guys from whoever the *** built our dvd drives and when they find out who fuc*ed up, they kill them. I dont know about you, but that would make at LEAST me feel better. i paid alot (and most likely will continue paying alot) of money for these stupid faulty disks, I think someone owes me a murder. GoW style, baby.

Re: Cracked Disc Problem?
I have a strong feeling it's the DVD player.  I just got my 360 back from MS last week and they replaced the DVD player and the only game that I played was RSV (which I had since the day it came out) and I had played it in the other 2 360s that I had (which crapped out) and now today I found out that there's a big crack in my disk. None of my other 12 games have that problem and I am seriously pissed.  If it's not one thing it's another with Microsoft, and I am seriously thinking about just getting rid of my system and getting a PS3 because this is all a load of B.S. We all paid top dollar for this system and 60.00 for games and for what? A two bit piece of ***?

Re: Cracked Disc Problem?
My 2k7 Baseball game cracked the same way all yours did. Starts small in the middle then goes out. The game worked for awhile and now does not read. None of my other games have done this. I have had the game for a while (Release date lol) i hope gamestop will be cool and replace it. They have done stuff for me before along those lines.
Its kinda frustrating that this happens.

Re: Cracked Disc Problem?

I just figured out why my game cracked. I know everyone has these conspiracy theories and what not.  But just 5 minutes ago I put a new DVD that I rented into my 360, but the thing is it wasn't perfectly set in my 360. Remember with the original xbox you could have it a little off and you could get away with it?  Well it was a little elevated because it wasn't set perfectly and I closed the drawer anyways and it got caught, and when I opened the tray there were 3 cracks in the center of the disc!  The DVD was perfect when I put it into the tray, that I can tell you all for a fact.  So make sure your games are perfectly set in the tray before closing it.  I take it that tray closes hard as ***.

Re: Cracked Disc Problem?
Le bump!

I just ran into this issue a week or two ago and decided to do some investigative work.  I'm glad I did.

I recently lost my copy of Rainbow 6: Vegas to this problem.  The disc was perfectly fine when it went into the drive, and the system was cold booted (in more ways than one -- it was the first time I'd turned it on that day).  I got a system link game started with my friend and got the infamous "dirty disc" error.  I took the disc out to give it a quick going-over and was horrified to see a long crack extending from the inside of the disc leading out.

I figured that it was probably just a bad disc, so we decided to try Gears of War instead.  I looked closely at the center ring of the disc before I put it in the drive.  There was nothing out of the ordinary so I put it in the drive.  After we realized that our versions were mismatched we decided to switch to our PCs instead.  When I ejected the Gears disc I found a small, hairline scratch, roughly 1/2" long on the label side and about half of that length on the data side.

My 360 has been in a horizontal position since I bought it, new, at the end of December 2006.  The thing has hardly moved since then and has plenty of air flow.  Aside from the rare "disc is dirty or unreadable" error during gameplay, I haven't had a problem until recently.

I take excellent care of my discs, too.  I have CDs from the early 90s that are still perfectly readable and have never had a problem like this with any CD drive or CD-based console that I've owned.  So, really, it's not an issue with how I'm handling the discs.  If anyone tries to imply that I'm not pressing the center ring properly, you deserve every flame that flies in your direction.

This whole thing is really a shame, too.  I had a lot of fun playing on my 360 and LOVE some of its features (hello, custom soundtracks and media streaming), but after I call about this issue (since I really don't want to have to pay over $100 to replace those games, I'd like to try and get them replaced) I'm still going to have a hard time trusting the system to behave itself.  The early PS2s were pieces of junk but at least they didn't have a habit of destroying games.

Re: Cracked Disc Problem?

Hi ive had 3 saints row disc crack from the centre hole, i got a uk relase console and it worked finefor 18monts then i got 3 red rings error, paid Microsoft £86.00 for repair in june 2007 (still wainting for refund) arrived back early July played saints row for about 5hrs and noticed that there was a small crack on the inside of the centre hole, so got a new copy and that also cracked, called CS again and had it picked up for repair on 2nd Aug, approx 5wks later got it back on the 4th sept, put a brand new copy of R6V in as it was a birthday gift wich was on 16 Aug, anyway played it for about 7/8 hrs and noticed this as cracked again.

Call CS again and told them i was not happy its the 3rd repair in 3 months and the box it self been away for approx 9 wks, all they wanted to do was offer me a game that i have already got.

This is gone for repair today 7th Sept.

For further information my drive in the last two have been samsung, and i think that could be the cause, games are kept in plastic sleaves in a dj case, so its not being damaged by myslef, also take good care.

Its about time Microsoft Started to Compensate Gamers for this inconvenience its just not on.

Re: Cracked Disc Problem?
yes unfortunately I believe it is the toshiba-samsung drive. I recently had mine replaced by MS and got a Hitachi drive. UNfortunatle some games have little cracks in the center and, like on glass, the cracks continue to grow even though the 360 has been repaired. Just using discs with cracks causes the cracks to grow so even though your 360 is fixed you still may have to replace some games

Re: Cracked Disc Problem?

I feel awful now, clipped son round ear, told him games were too expensive for him to keep ruining and barred him off Xbox for 2 days. COD 3 was first, love it so replaced it, then Test Drive unlimited, then the COD replacment cracked, replaced it(ebay), now that one has gone. Is there anyway of backing these discs up, or getting an exchange.

It is all a shame, best console, best games, s##t quality control, hate too say it but maybe you cant beat the East for electronics after all

Re: Cracked Disc Problem?

Same thing happened to me 3 days ago, I was playing Ridge Racer on the world explorer, and suddenly the screen froze with the words "loading" on it, so I open the tray and I found a big crack on the middle of the disk.

It was not the first time that my console does this, it happened before with my copy of Gears of War, but at that time I thought that it was my fault, because the xbox was on vertical and I accidentally moved it with the disc inside, so from that day I decided to play with the xbox in a horizontal position, as I did with this RR6 game, so I don't know how it cracks the cd this time..

Maybe playing too much with the same disc might be the trouble.. I was playing more than 8 hours on a day.

Anyway It sucks, but fortunately my Gears Of War, Halo 3, Lost Planet and other more expensive games, seems to look fine, so I'm buying this game again for $20 bucks, maybe this time, it`s going to last until I finish the damn thing..

Re: Cracked Disc Problem?
yep so after reading theses posts i think ive figured out our problem.  My H3 disk cracked and i got the free replacement (i had limited edition) now its cracking again.  I also noticed my MAss Effect disc cracking now too.  Since i take great care of my discs by always puttin tem in their case, the problem must be the crappy case design.  This may also be in combination with ssome faulty dvd drives.  My suggestions is if you see your discs start to crack, ducktape the inner ring ( i dont know if this will work, use @ ur own discretion) and DONT USE YOUR game cases.  Almost every single case i have (about 10) has a different snap design.  Use a custom slip design, and be wary for scratches as well.  AS a i said, im gonna try ducktaping the inner ring to prevent it from cracking too much more, hopefully i dont have to replace them, i think i'll pull a switch then, i refuse to pay for a design flaw.
peace

Re: Cracked Disc Problem?
Ubisoft replaced my Rainbow 6 disc for $15.  I just sent in my whole box, and they sent me a whole new package.  It was fast and easy.  No hassles at all.  Microsoft may replace their games for free.  I have heard stories of this happening.

Wewt!

Or is it more likely my 360? I don't want to put other discs in and find that they all get ruined because I can't afford to rebuy them.  Would a cracked disc damage my machine?

Thanks.

Call Microsoft again and ask them to replace your Xbox's CD/DVD-ROM. It would really s*cks if this happens to your other discs as well.

As for the others, put your Xbox on a normal flat surface,  with no movement or vibrating enviroment at all. If all fails, call your Microsoft tech support as well and let them replace your CD/DVD-ROM.

Re: Cracked Disc Problem?
The same thing happened to my Halo 3 disk. At first i thought it was my fault but then my ODST broke as well. I noticed a two small cracks coming from the center of each of them. I take exceptional care of my disks: I always take them out of the system when I'm done, I put disk protecters on etc. But just today I noticed that both games have the same style clips that keep them attached to the box. I also noticed that oblivion (not the game of the year edition) was working fine; this game has two curvy clips that are slightly reminiscent of a yin yang. So if the clips are the problem, keep all games that have four arrow-shaped clips pointing toward each other IN A CASE! Do NOT keep it in the box unless you are able to start fireworks with your piles of money!!!o0
