Re: Disk is unreadable
Man... I only got 1 out of 4 games through without freezing or the screen going black and then freezing.  Brand new console, with a cleared cache, and is not happening to any other game.  Anyone know of any petitions or anything that could maybe help lead to a resolution?  Very frustrating - the one game I've looked forward to for a year.

I'd say exchange it again -- maybe it's just bad luck or maybe there were a batch of bad copies made.  EA will get the message if a whole pile of their games get returned to them.
I returned my copy to EBgames today, told them it was getting disk read errors and said that I figured it was corrupt data.  They gave me a new copy.  I haven't had the problem since.

Lucky for them though the disks themselves aren't too expensive so who knows.

I get the error ever now and then too..  I only have the game for less than a week and am only 5 games into the season but have had the unreadable disk error 4 times..   quite frustrating.   It never happens with Madden 08 or Halo 3 or any other game..

Thanks Microsoft for a rock solid gaming platform!! ( on my 4th after 3 ROD)

This may just be coincidence so bear that in mind.

Today my kid was playing Lego Star Wars 2 and after she played, I popped out the Lego disc and put in the NHL disc.  I was able to play about 6 or 7 consecutive games and didn't ever get the unreadable disk error.  I'm wondering if maybe something with the cache is cleared up by switching from another game and then playing NHL?  Normally I get the disk error after maybe one or two games, so I'm thinking I could be on to something.  Anyone else try another disc and then playing NHL?

I am experiencing the exact same thing; it sounds like a buzz saw going off in my living room! I guess I should return the disc?

For the 1 millionth time its not the game!  Its the bloody garbage 360 console.  I rarely get disc errors on NHL 08 but ive gotten it 4 or 5 times on PGR4 in the 2 days that ive had it.  Constantly when playing PGR4 i can hear the drive spin up and down, up and down...then boom, disc error!

LMAO unfortunately thats just how the garbage console is made and we all have to live with it.  Trust me, everytime I load up a game...it sounds like an aircraft is departing from my living room LOL.  So pathetic becuase if i play at night, I shut the doors, I run upstairs and I can still hear the system running.......almost like a vacuum is on.

Whoa, chill out mr happy pants. Sounds like MS didnt do a good job repairing your console. If all those games aren't working its a console issue. See what we are talking about is just NHL and no other games do this to us. Its not MS, its EA.

Well I appreciate your point of view, Sticky, but I'm not a newbie to the system nor electronic devices, for that matter; I can say with absolute certainty that this particular disc is noisy like no other. It is not the system, but rather an unbalanced disc.

I also got the error tonight on PGR4 so it just shows its not an NHL 08 problem.

I've been getting this same error in PGR4 ALL THE TIME. I can't get through 3 short races now without it happening. I took it back and got another disc at EB games; with the same damn error within 1o minutes of playing.

I have a brand NEW 360 (PGR 4 was the first game I played on it). Yet no other games get this error....yet.

IT'S NOT THE DISC. It IS the system's response to the game as 10 minutes on google and I've seen hundreds of posts just in the last couple days about this same issue that's affecting a multitude of *new* games that have been released in the last couple months.

I've tried emptying my cache to no avail. I'm still searching for an answer.

Not exactly like that, but what you have done sounds similar to a thing I have mentioned before. And that is to remove that disc every time you finish playing and putting it back in every time you start playing, while you also let it load to the dashboard before you close the tray when starting up. This has worked for me and others (although I have only had this happen once and I usually don't play more then 3 games in a row).

And for those who like to clear their cache.... remember that you shouldn't be signed on to any profile when you do it.

Has anyone noticed that the NHL 08 disc is thicker then other game discs.  I just noticed this today.  I wonder if that could be causing a problem.

I think it is the nhl disk i played rainbow 6, tony hawk, and dead rising, about a week or so and they all work. My systems fan sounds like it stops with nhl 08 and then its starts back up again. I get the disk needs to be cleaned message sometimes. I have a lil scratch from the disk dropping in the console. Sounds just like when i had ps2 and some games would play and some would get the DRE!

It's definately the disk.  I haven't had any troubles with any other game.  It freezes right after I put the game in and it loads to the main menu....that's as far as I can get.  I'm tired of fooling with it.....I've already traded it in for 2K8.  Granted, 08 has better gameplay, but what's the use if EA released a game that doesn't work.  At least I can play 2K8.  Shame on EA for releasing such a great game without making sure it actually worked.  Hopefully they will be more prepared next year.

Re: Disk is unreadable

I'm getting this error with Fifa 08.

I had the same problem with the console that was returned to me after reapair and that was actually marking the disks (the game was Stranglehold). People keep stating that it is the disks, but I'm not so sure. Stranglehold worked fine for a while, and when I started getting the error, I checked the surface and it was scuffed. I took it back for a replacement and the new disk was pristine. Within hours, I was getting the error again, and when I checked, the new disk was marked. This caused me to send the console back for a replacement (it's a long, drawn out story).

So now I've a new machine and it's started doing the same thing with Fifa 08.

My Fifa 08 disk has a barely noticeable score about two centemetres out from the  readable part of the inside edge. This runs all the way round the disk, but requires careful examination in direct light to spot. I'm wondering if the drive in this console is marking the disk (as with the previous console), as it was fine to begin with, but is now giving the read error more and more often.

Of course, what nobody has suggested is that this is not just one problem. It could be that the symptoms are caused in some cases by faulty disks and in others by problems with the console itself (either hardware or software based). I would suggest that people check their disks very carefully, though.

Re: Disk is unreadable
IMO it's gotta be something with this year's batch of EA games.  I've got this year's Madden, NCAA, and NHL games and all three I've gotten the disc unreadable error (on numerous occasions I might add).  I haven't gotten the error with any of our other games; that's why I think it's something with EA.  I just make sure to save my game whenever possible.

BYAAAAAHHHHHHHHH!

It would be easier to swallow if the head honchos at EA would allow games to be saved mid game, so if it happens in third when you're up 10-0 against the rags you're not forced to replay the whole game.

This was the ONLY game doing this on my console, but now I've noticed it with Madden 08 as well. Sure sounds like an EA thing. I've gone back to playing Oblivion, Guitar Hero 2, Halo 3 and they work flawlessly. I get this about 1 in every 5 games on NHL 08 and the last 3 times I played Madden which would make Madden 3 out of 16. I enjoy these games, it's too bad EA is allowing this to ruin them.

i have played many ea games and have never had this kind of problems, i get the disc unreadable only in ranked games. in my 18 ranked games i have gotten 5 disc unreadables, each time with very little time left with big leads, i should19-0-1, but im 12-5-1 with a 16%dnf...never quit games!!!...i get that weird clicking sound like three times, then unreadable comes up..this is so frusterating, i just hope they put out a patch asap so i can get my dnf down, and my rank up

IT'S NOT THE DISC.

I just called Microsoft, and they said they're getting thousands of calls about this problem in the last few days. Again, it's a notorious problem with *new* games like NHL 08, PGR4, NBA 2K8 and Madden 08 that are pushing the cache to its limit.

What the rep from Microsoft and many others on the board have mentioned is inserting another game to clear the cache completely and then putting back in the game you planned on using. Yes, it's a pain; but it's the only thing that works as of yet.

Just jump on a PGR4 or NBA 2K8 forum and you'll see tons of people having this problem. It has NOTHING to do with EA or your "faulty" disc.

I guess Halo 3 is having this exact problem also. There are petitions being sent around the net for Microsoft to address this "unreadable disc" problem.

So many people responded in the PGR4 forum about this same issue that a moderator immediately locked the thread.

It's not just EA games folks. This new wave of complex games is simply causing the system some problems.

This is the best explanation I've heard so far. It is definitely happening with PGR4 on my machine, as well as Fifa 08. And it usually happens after playing the game for a while.

The good thing is that it's not a hardware error (which is a relief).

Still, hope there is some long term fix, and sooner rather than later. Maybe a patch for the individual games that are having the problem.

Look it doesn't matter what's causing it.  The fact of the matter is that Ea released a faulty game.  Whether it is the disk or the cache limit or whatever.....Ea should have caught that and fixed it before the game was released.  Now if I want to get my hockey fix, I'll be playing 2K8 because at least it works....bottom line.  It's a shame because, like I said before, NHL 08 would be the superior hockey game if it just worked.
