Skiz, also try this link, the second poster has a tip for you to try to use your stuff without connection.

Re: Busted Disc Drive Club
My drive will not open periodically. I can remove the cover, and use a paper clip to assist it (have to press eject while doing this), but this seems to be an issue with the unit itself.

Re: Busted Disc Drive Club

If you have a samsung drive and the drive is not opening, its normally the rubber band used on the pulleys to move the tray.  You can take it out and clean it or replace it or add another if need be without tearing apart the console.  The rubber band can be seen with the tray open, to the left side of the drive.  I had this happen to mine and I added a smaller rubber band to the factory one and now the tray opens without any issues.

I can hear it make some kind of clicking noise, doesn't matter what game, and then it sounds like it stops spinning. Most of the games still play, but the music will drop out or some of the graphics will drop out. (ie. playing Forza 2, disc stops spinning? and the track disappears for a few seconds. I was driving on a black strip instead of a track) Usually if I pop out to the dashboard and start the game again, it will start spinning again, but it goes out again after a while...randomly it seems. No damage to the disks, very strange. Any ideas?

Same thing was happening to me for a couple of days and then bam! Ring of death. I'd say your 360's days are numbered.

Mine has started displaying the "Unplayable disk" message now.  It's got worse and worse to the point where any disk displays the same message.  If I turn it off and then place the  vertically it sometimes works.  This is really pissing me off, looks like I will have to contact customer support but I'll be angry if I have to pay £80 as it's out of warranty.

Sounds like it's a common fault with this damn 360.

I have the same issue.  It started about 10 days ago. I would get a disk read error every once in a while now. Constant. Can't play any games at all. I will be calling customer support as soon as I get home.

This sux.  I haven't even played mine that much, but I am sure that it is out of warranty.

Yeah, my disk drive bit the dust too. It stopped working for a while then began to work again. Now it's so loud I can't stand it anymore. I bought my console last year, so my warranty is obviously expired, so if I send it in for repairs, will I get a new console, or will they just intsall a new one?

mine stopped recognizing discs nine days after it first struggled to read them.if your console is over 12 months old then im afraid you will have to foot the bill to get it repaired (around £70-£80)thank god mine was still under warranty, ive spent enough on it already.

A couple months before it died my 360 started getting disc read errors and occasionally not opening.  With a little patience I was able to get it open without too much trouble but then I had to send it for repair, after resets it still wouldn't open and gave me the red ring of death.

I periodically get the Unreadable disc error... on brand new games!  Happened with GoW back in January.  Just this week, it happened with a two-day old disc of Viva Pinata.
I'm in a bit of a limbo because it's not happening often enough to force me to get it fixed, but it's often enough to make me angry.

My 360 will get the unplayable disk message when I put in games sometimes, and with dvd's sometimes. It clicks like it is trying to read it,but doesn't.Either the laser is dirty or maladjusted, and they want$140 to fix it.I had no idea cleaning a freaking laser was sooooooo expensive.Gotta say,PS3 looks better everyday.

My drive has started making a terrible grinding noise on every game & gives me the unplayable disc error more often than not, since i downloaded the latest update!! This is my 3rd 360 & i won't be buying another one, the ps3's price tag doesn't seem so steep when you've shelled out for 3 360's!! f**k you ms, i will never buy any of your products again.

Re: Busted Disc Drive Club

My original 360 broke after 3.5 months, then I got a replacement, from day one the disc drive didn't open on the first try, some times I have to press eject 2-3 times, also when discs stop spinning it makes a loud whirring noise, there's been times when I've opened the disc try to find the disc still spinning on it, I'm amazed none of my games have been damaged.

This doesn't bother me too much as I have found a way to open the drive on the first try, just push the tray slightly in and then it gets out.

What is really making me angry is that sometimes the disc drive tries to open itself when I'm playing a game, which means I loose whatever I achieved in the game (not nice when you are near the end of a 50+ minute race on Forza 2) as it goes back to the blade menu and the part that tells you what game is in reads "Opening" and the power sign constatly flashes like when you open the tray.

Also I've had a couple of screen freezes, once on Gears and another on Forza 2 in the last couple of days, nothing happens when I open the tray so I have to turn it off.

I think my replaced 360 might be on it's way out after another 3-4 months.

I don't know if any of you guys have had this kind or issues with yours.

Of course I've thought about contacting MS about sending it back to be checked but I don't fancy waiting about 1 month or more to get it back, 10 days or so was not too bad first time around but I don't want to be 1 month or more without the 360, specially now that the great games are coming out.

Re: Busted Disc Drive Club
Might as well join up to this club.

I'm on my 2nd Xbox (a refurbsihed replacement for my original one that locked up every 30 mins).

First couple of weeks no problems, then disc read errors started.

It kept insisting the disc was a DVD film not a game and plays that daft "movie" instead of launching the game. If I eject and close the tray enough times, eventually it will detect it as a game and play. Once it knows its a game it will play fine for hours (until i wanna switch games). I had the 360 vertical for a while and sometimes it would take over 15 mins of eject/close tray loops to get a game going. Now its horizontal it seems much happier about game discs. I still need a few eject/close trays, but nowhere near as many as when it was vertical.

It also seems (but not 100% proven) to read dics a bit quicker (ie less eject/closes) if I put pressure on the case around the drive tray area when its spinning up, although this may be co-incidence.

It also makes some nasty clunking noises on powerup and shutdown which are worrying but so far no damaged discs.

MS offerend a free "fix" which is bound to be another refurbished jobbie but I'm cutting my losses for now, they might send one back thats worse than this one, at least it works reliably once its in the mood. (Now I've said it it will probably Red light tonight!)

Shoddy hardware indeed this stuff. They should have lifetime guarantees especially considering the cost of the games and the monthly Live account fees.

same exact problem i have, it used to do it only once a month or so saying "please put this disc in a 360", but has progressively gotten worse, tried changing from horizontal to vertical and back, vertical seems to work better, only have to pop it in and out 10-12 times to get it to read instead of 30 times or more when it was horizontal.......so i call M$, tell them about it, they say it needs to be sent in and oh by the way "it's out of warranty, $139.95 please", so i tell them it's been doing it and i just haven't been home enough to mess with it and they tell me i am SOL, pay up or deal with it

Re: Busted Disc Drive Club
Yeah, my drive just took a big stinker on me yesterday while playing a marathon of Crackdown. It showed the classic symptom of the dreaded 'grinding' noise followed by 'Unreadable Disc'/'Open Tray' in the menu. I have tried everything from sitting it to a verticle position to pimp-slapping a few times (not hard)

I got it last Christmas so I should be covered. I am going to raise *** if they give me grief about shipping fees/reimbursement costs. What's worse, I was down to the LAST hidden orb in the game. Talk about salt on the open wound, eh?

I had two that stopped reading games altogether within months of each other. Music and movies worked fine. They were just a few weeks past warranty so I had to pay.

are they like dirt circles? my friends tell me about dirt circles that actually grow on the disc as you play it more, because of a faulty disc drive probably.  Its never happened to me, but it has to quite a few of them.
