Wow, no "Axelay" love here and quite possible the greatest SNES shmup of all time. Although that being on XLA is pretty null, you can download it on Wii's Virtual Console. Also the older PS2 Silpheed was damn awesome too.

Amen to all of that Axelay-ness.  Also, some of that R-Type action with a side of Gradius and some Darius Twin and Castle Shikigami chasers to wash it all down!

I have fond memories of Aero Blasters/Air Buster and although it was really hard, Giares.

New scallion flavor!

air buster always seemed like an odd ball game.  Pretty cool though.

That doesn't really say much, though. The SNES was terrible for shmups. TG16/PCE was where it was at during the 16-bit era.

Re: Classic shooters on xbla...name your faves...
There are too many slick shooters out there that could be ported over easy for MS.. R-Type, Raiden Fighters series, Pulstar/Blazing Star, Darius Gaiden, Layer Section/Rayforce, Metal Black, Don Pachi series, Strikers 1945 series, Aero Fighters, Giga Wing, Mars Matrix, EspRade, EspGaluda (If it can be emulated), almost too many others that are top-notch.. Not entirely a shooter, but Twinkle Star Sprites would be another fun one for XBL support ;p

As far as personal favorites go--MUSHA, Radiant Silvergun, Lords of Thunder, Ikaruga, Giga Wing, Thunderforce IV/Lightening Force, R-Type II, Raiden.. eh, again, way too many to name.. I don't know if Radiant Silvergun has actually successfully been emulated, though.. I'll have to check that later.. Ikaruga is on its way, fortunately.. Just have to wait a while..

In the end I'd prefer MS to stick with porting arcade games rather than classic console titles.. MUSHA would be great, as well as TFIV, but.. I like being able to play something that hasn't been ported in full before (i.e., Contra, Super Contra, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles were excellent examples for the arcade purist)..Or if they are going to do a console port, they may as well attempt something like R-Type Delta, where they'd be able to improve the visuals and really deliver something killer..

SSF emulates Radiant Silvergun perfectly.  I just checked.  I never played that game before, but given it a quick go it seems like its pretty complex as far as your weapon types.  Every fricken button has a different attack.  Pretty cool.  Too bad it doesnt recognize (SSF) the L and R triggers on the 360 controller.

Re: Classic shooters on xbla...name your faves...
Sweet, I'll check that out.

Radiant Silvergun has a lot of different weapon combos.. There are just three buttons if you're playing the arcade version, different button combos do different attacks. Each is better in certain situations, just fiddle with them all and you'll eventually get used to it. Also, the game has a lot of different bonus point systems, crucial for leveling up your weapons. For instance, keep using a single weapon for a set period of time on a single enemy (best on bosses), and you get a bonus.. and then another, and another, etc., keeps going on. Another one is, you'll notice there are three colors of enemies--Red, Blue, and Yellow. Another crucial combo system you work with through the game, is destroying one red enemy (or more in groups of three), then destroy *one* blue enemy, then immediately destroy as many yellow enemies as possible. You'll see what happens, there are plenty of chances to do it on the early parts of the first stage. Stick with it for a while, the game is a blast when you get familiar with it =)

To all the rest of you, sorry for the rant. Just a personal favorite ;P

Yea, i've read all about that in the past.  All i know is for the saturn i had an attack where it was single fire in the front, then 4 in the back.  Anothe was balls that looked like waterfalls?, another was a bomb type attack, another was laser, another was a green wave attack and another (button combo) was like a sonor type thingie.

3 of those are from Treasure... I am more a Cave fan myself. Guwange, DoDonPachi, and Progear - Although Ikaruga is still my fave - I never cared much for RS, but Alien Soldier rocks.

Alien Soldier FTW!!!!

I would second all these, but Radiant Silvergun is my favioret of the bunch...and for retro reasons I played Life Force more then anything when I was younger.

I never see it mentioned, but I really enjoyed Varth when I played it on Capcom Classic collection. It became my fav of every shooter on the collection. I couldn't get into Forgotten worlds when playing it on PSP, but maybe on a modern console...

Biohazard Battle on Genesis was a fav, and I'd love some form of a Parodius collection on XBLA.

Twinkle Star Sprites NEEDS to be on live, I'd love to have it with online play!

OMG I would love to see UN Squadron come to the live arcade!! That game was the (2nd) one to get me into shooters. I have very fond memories of that one.

on my NES I always liked "Life Force" and my fave was "Dragon Spirit"...the way you had to beat the first stage instead of dying to play on a harder level set well with me.

I believe the second XBOX Namco Museum is backwards compatible--It has the arcade version of Dragon Spirit on it.. albeit a helluva lot harder than the NES version =)
