Re: Cave shmups coming to 360!
This news kicks infinite amounts of ***.  Unfortunately, Dai Ou Jou is the only DoDonPachi game I have access to already, so I was kinda hoping for the other games in the series. Ah well, it's an awesome game so I'm not complaining.  I haven't played Ketsui yet, but it looks pretty good.

Only sad thing is MS denied the Live Arcade ports, so we have to purchase retail versions. Not that this is a major problem, we get funky covers and whatnot, but it will probably be way more expensive...

VERY good news! I'm just worried that the game will be region-locked, like in most cases. Although I do hope to pick up a JP console someday, especially if American games will run on it anyhow. I still need to research this issue some more.

Re: Cave shmups coming to 360!
any new news on this?

it seems to me, form the tone of the Cave employees, that they are more than miffed about being rejected from XBLA. I mean, it's not as if the service isn't choked with garbage (Yaris anyone?). I don't see why offering 2 of the most well regarded games of their genre is anything but good. So what if that means they have 10 or 20 shmups on XBLA. It's not as if everyone HAS to buy them. MS isn;t too worried about how many FPS games clutter the 360.

Forcing Cave and 5pb to release this as a retail disc, possibly two games on one, is only going to ensure less releases of classics on XBLA. Much unlike Nintendo's Virtual Console which is hitting paydirt with faithful ports.

At every turn in this generation MS has shot themselves in the foot when they could be branding themselves, their console, and their service as something different. They just seem deathly afraid of taking on the mantel of "the platform for real gamers". Let wii have the casual market, PS3 can take the blu-ray owning 3 game a year players, and Xbox can be a solid game machine. It's SEGA all over again, just with a lot more money to flush down the tubes.

thats because M$ only cares about making money.  FPS sell.  Puzzle games sell.  Board games sell.  Card games sell.  Im tired of seeing board and card games.  I guess thats the way it is for(ever) now.

Yea Micro-Crap doesn't care about the fans of particular genres, they only care what will appeal to the majority of the Xbox community so they can make MONEY!! Bunch of theives...Shortly after this news I sold my 360(seriously) and now I play DonDonPachi, Melty Blood and many other cave shmups and Japanese arcade games on my J PS2 that MS will never bring to 360. But I may get my 360 back some day in the distant future. lol

I have another solution for all you lovers of shmups and arcade games in general:

MAME32, the Multiple Arcade Machine Emulator.

It is a piece of free software that can play almost any older arcade game, including DoDonPachi (I know, I just played it) and many others (1944, Battle Garegga, Hotdog Storm, Gunnail, Gigawing, etc...). It is not region-locked, nor does it cost you 800MS points per game, and you can run it on almost any modern PC (within 5 years old) with no problems....

...and yes, it plays NeoGeo games also.

If Micro$oft wishes to deny games that (to me) aren't worth the purchase price of a full retail disc, due to their shortness of game time and difficulty level / cheapness of enemy attacks, then they will find out that us gamers will look elsewhere to get our gaming fix, and it won't include buying & using MS Points for XBLA!

And yes, didn't read this one until after I posted that last one..

MAME is great, particularly if you've got a modern PC. I sold all of my gaming collection, and all of my imported shooters--But I still play them on MAME, as well as those ones that never came to consoles, like EspRADE.

Oh, and thanks to MS and the 360, we have the best controller for PC old-school gaming, haha..

Yeah, I hear ya.. Same with me, I can't really hate them.. I've been a supporter of the XBOX since day one, and only sold my 360 to make ends meet (bah! I hate it when that happens).. I will definitely be getting one in the future.

Admittedly I have been a little irritated recently with them lately however.. Mainly regarding decisions about games like what we're talking about here in this post, but also the fact that they seem to be straying from what their original mantra was, which has always been to support the hardcore gamers, you know, the ones that got the XBOX off the ground to begin with. Eh.. oh well =X

Re: Cave shmups coming to 360!
Funny how MS (supposedly) said that they wanted to cut back on faithful arcade ports on XBLA. Yet what was recently released on XBLA? An arcade port of Soul Calibur, with no real enhancements.

This further convinces me that my theory is correct : that MS told 5pb to say that just to turn everyone's attention away from what's really going on. Which is that MS is paying small (and sometimes no-so-small) Japanese game developers/publishers under-the-table to release successful arcade games that have never been ported, like Senko no Ronde, Ketsui, and DDPDOJBL (and Idolmaster and Otomedius), on the 360 as retail releases. So far, the only shmups released on XBLA were already available on other consoles, and were also old (Ikaruga) or not very popular (Exelica). My guess is that all the secrecy (and 5pb's "comment") is due to MS not wanting to look like they're desperate in the public eye.

I don't think my theory would hold water if those games I mentioned were multi-platform. But them being 360-exclusive makes me raise an eyebrow. There's also a good reason why games like these are region-locked : because it pretty much forces people like you and me to buy Japanese 360s, which in turn boosts the ailing sales of 360s in Japan (what I think MS really wants).

I totally feel what you're saying.  Although, if you look at the releases in the "arcade"  It has been a really really long time since a port of a true arcade game was brought to the "arcade." So, in theory that still is true.

I am going to buy a japbox because i know there will never be any good shootem ups this side of the country (usa).  That is my favorite genre of game.  Unfortunately, america sucks for that aspect of gaming.  Because all we seem to care about are FPS and how ULTRA realistic a game can be.  I miss the good old days.

Soulcalibut is said to be DC port... region-locking may have more to do with publishing rights, because even some multi-platform, all-region games, seem to be region-locked to make the NTSC-J versions unplayable on western consoles.

Re: Cave shmups coming to 360!
Yeah, the XBLA port of Soulcalibur is probably based on the DC version, although they did take out some of the things the DC version had (and didn't add any real extras). The XBLA ports of Ikaruga and Exelica also lacked some of the things the DC versions had, but at least they had other extras to try and compensate for it. I'm sure XBLA ports of Ketsui and DDPDOJBL would have had plenty of extras (though it wouldn't be hard to top the arcade originals in that department).

As for the region-locking, I don't think it's as simple as mere licensing issues. Most US 360 games work just fine on a JP 360, notably those developed/published by Western companies. It's also true that practically all JP 360 games are region-locked, even the ones that originally came from the West. However, I don't think anyone living outside of Japan would have any reason to buy the NTSC-J version of a Western game, so whether or not they're region-locked isn't really an issue (besides, there's always the cheaper Asian versions). On the other hand, from the Japanese point of view, being able to play the US versions of Western 360 games long before their Japanese release (if they ever get one) does provide a good incentive to buy the console. That also makes a JP 360 far more import-friendly for everyone else, and it's also quite nice that those import consoles are covered by Microsoft's extended warranty here in the US (but US 360s aren't covered by MS in Japan).

Just to make sure I'm reading this right...if I import a J360, I can send it off for repairs in the US, like a normal US360?

I'm considering getting a J360 for Oneechanbara because I'm tired of waiting for them to bring it over here.

My JP360 has been working perfectly ever since I got it (over a year now), so I haven't had the need to get it repaired. But I've heard from various owners of JP360s in the US that MS did repair their consoles, and honored the warranty as if they were US consoles. I've never heard any JP360 owner in the US complain that MS didn't cover them. Take that as you will.

If DDPDOJBL and Ketsui do really well on the 360, my guess is that Deathsmiles and/or Mushihime-sama Futari will be next, and Espgaluda 2 is also a strong possibility.

3 reasons why I think this : First, because these 3 are more recent. Second, because they seem to be the most popular Cave games in Japan. Third, because none of them have been ported yet either.

Again, just my guess (wish).

Looks like I was right, somewhat.

How about: Let's demand a Europe/US release! Microsoft keeps pissing me off with all those STG's in Japan like Shikigami no Shiro 3 and Raiden IV. I want to be able to play those games but for some reason that stuff is exclusive to Japan. How agonizing.

It would feel like a rip-off, thats for sure ... but yeah, I would probably do it (if the price was right).

The thing is, I could only do this with few selected titles, because I dont speak/read Japanese.
