Just continue to do find work missions. If nothing is appearing then destroy a kingdom by continuing to attack it until the option to destroy it appears.

Chic - The mission for Chic appears once you have fully upgraded either Shimazwei's or Fuya's weapons. You might also have to reach a certain rank, but I'm not sure. I definitely unlocked Chic when I was either Galestar or the rank below it. The mission is titled Gun Obsession. I think Shimazwei and Fuya are both automatically in your party, which could suck if you haven't been using them, because them mission can be difficult if you have 1 or 2 underleveled characters. Anyway, if Shimazwei or Fuya approach Chic during the mission, a dialog will take place between the 3 of them.

Al - Complete the mission War God's Common Struggle. I'm pretty sure Al and Wave have to survive the battle, which shouldn't be a problem since they are pretty powerful. The mission appears once you have defeated the Nameless Army. The Overlord Army must still be around. I don't remember what rank I was at the time I got the mission, it might have unlocked when I reached the Galestar rank.

Are you sure you were Galestar when you unlocked Al and Chic? A FAQ translated from a Japanese site says you must be a "level 7 merc commander" to unlock either, which I think is the final rank.

My Shimazwei is level 25 or so and I have his gun upgraded to level 8 and even though I have tons of cash (like over 30k), it doesn't give me the option to upgrade to level 9, its black and theres "----" struck through the price requirement. Do you have to be a certain level with the character to max their weapon? I am wondering if I have to be a higher rank than Galestar to unlock the final weapon for the gun characters, since it opens up Chic's mission apparently.

Some people have been saying you can't unlock both Al and Break in the same playthrough, but I'm not sure about this. However, I'm only Galestar rank, so I think I might have to rank up 1 or 2 more levels before Break's mission appears.

From what I've read you have to destroy either one or another nation and you get one character or the other, depending on which one you destroy. I'm guessing you can get both in the first playthrough as long as you have multiple saves?

Chic sounds like hes gonna be a pain in the *** to get. I haven't played with Fuya or Shimazwei once. Gonna take alot of grinding to upgrade their weapons all the way.

Thanks for the info.

It actually shouldn't be too hard to upgrade either of their weapons. For starters, you only need to upgrade one of them fully to unlock Chic. Plus, the last weapon upgrade you buy for them isn't the one that typically costs 37 or 38 thousand, its actually the weapon level below that, I think around 17,000 thousand. You unlock their ultimate weapons when you unlock Chic.

If you are low on cash, I would suggest selling all your extra armor and accessories that your party doesn't use. I held onto most of my armor and accessories for most of the game, thinking I would eventually need it, but you don't. As long as your main party has the best armor possible (at that time), I would sell all the other stuff.

1. I'm positive I was Gale Star rank when I unlocked Chic and Al because I'm still Gale Star rank. I beat the game today, and was still Gale Star rank after. So I reloaded a previous save and have been attempting to raise my merc rank by doing missions for the Overlord army. I'm pretty sure the other characters I'm missing (like Hiro) won't become available until I rank up again. The problem is that I have no idea what I have to do to raise my merc rank. My characters are now in the low 70s, dunno if merc level is tied to character levels. Apparently getting higher grades on missions is what improves your merc rank. Problem is, I consistently get A grades, but still haven't been able to get a single S grade.

2. I know the FAQ says you have to be a "level 7 merc commander" and yes that is the final rank. However, in the U.S. version, according to some people at Gamefaqs, the highest level is called Mercenary King and the level below it is Licensed and below that is Gale Star. The FAQ on Gamefaqs must be wrong for some of the characters though, since I didn't have the highest rank when I unlocked characters like Al or Chic. I'm pretty sure you have to be Merc King to unlock Hiro, Zakifon, and Little Snow though.

3. That final weapon upgrade isn't available for Shimazwei's gun until after you play Chic's mission and unlock him. He basically teaches Shimazwei his final weapon upgrade. If you've maxed Shimazwei's gun and Chic's mission isn't popping up, I would suggest advancing the story, since I know for a fact that I was Gale Star at most when I unlocked Chic. So if you are Gale Star and have maxed Shima's weapon, Chic's mission has to be unlocked based on story progress.

Re: Character Recruitment Thread
Thanks for all the clarification with Chic, I was gonna eat my pants having to grind Shimazwei's levels up just to unlock the Chic mission.

I have Overlord/Unworld/Nameless Army and one unimportant minor nation that doesn't have any achievements tied to it still standing.

I went ahead on one save slot and beat the 3rd encounter with Zok/Zug (or whatever those demons that follow the kid around are called) and opened up a ton of new missions (both find work and regular missions), but none of them were titled the ones I needed for character recruitment. The jobs were mostly level 7, with 2 or 3 level 9 jobs at the bottom.

Do you remember vaguely where you were story wise/how many nations you had left stading when you got Chic?

I got a rank S on attacking the either Attacking the Underworld/Overlord level5 mission, whichever one spawns you in the ice cave with 4 groups of enemies with 1 general for each group, a 5th group with the final general spawning after you kill the last general.

I did the mission in 9 turns, no one died and I had around a 170something combo, linking Begina and Culcha's 3rd attacks for over 130ish hits, doing some cleanup/final kills with Sugata then linking finally to another character to do a maxed Battle Formation.

I think ranking up is tied with how many A and S ranks you get, like theres an invisible experience bar determining your merc rank.

I think when I unlocked Chic's mission I had two kingdoms left. One of my old saves has him as my last recruited chracter with only the Overlord and Oromachi kingdoms left standing.

What were your character's levels when you played "Attacking the Underworld"?

Yeah, I finally ranked up to Licensed today, still don't have an S ranking yet. Just kept playing missions and I ranked up.

And when I reached Licensed rank, the mission to recruit Zakifon unlocked. Hopefully, if I reach Mercenary King then Hiro and Little Snow's missions will become available.

Mine were in the lower to mid 40s. If your characters are much higher they'll do too much damage and not be able to build a max Battle Formation or Begina and Culcha's 3rd special moves will wipe people out too quickly and not let one link into the other on the same set of enemies. If you have good weapons and are much higher than the late40s/early 50s, I'd suggest finding a higher ranked Find Work mission that has around 4-5 generals in it, instead.

Alot of people on GameFAQs were complaining about the specificness/randomness of getting an S rank, apparently they're kind of difficult to get.

I'm Licensed now and got Little Snow. Getting her isn't related to Merc King.

I don't see anything related to Hiro, I'm thinking she and the blue demon guy you get on the second playthrough are the only characters that require Mercenary King to get. Unless the nations that AI and Break are from are required to be fallen to get Hiro, cause those are the two I still have left standing right now.

Just keep doing Find Work missions and getting high ranks. Enough As will get you the next rank. Getting an S or two makes it go alot faster.

I got Little Snow on Galestar rank as well. I also got Al on this rank.

From the translated gamefaqs's guide it looked like Al and Break were potentially exclusive. If Nameless Army falls before Overlord you get Al. If Overlord goes down and Nameless is around you get Break?

Anyhow, the S rank has been eluding me as well. I think # of turns must be killing me. I've gotten through a lot of missions without anyone retreating and have had 350+ hit combos still no "S." But I play pretty defensively so my turn count is always high.

Re: Character Recruitment Thread
I got Hiro tonight. For starters you have to have recruited The 7th Hamaou, Trick Blue, Inuou, Gyufee II, and Shimazwei (according to the translated FAQ on Gamefaqs). Once you reach the rank of Mercenary King, Hiro's mission Prodigy of Blaze will become available. No dialog needs to be initiated during the battle, just win the map by killing all the angels and she'll join.

The reason I missed Little Snow was because the last army I left standing was Overlord. Thus, her mission never appeared, since Overlord must be destroyed in order to recruit her.

# of turns is probably THE most important area to keep in mind when going for an S rank. I've gotten 4 S ranks now and all of them were in 9 turns or less. These were all on stages with quite a few generals to defeat, as well (usually 3-5) I always bag combos over 10k damage and 100hits (usually its closer to 30k damage and 250ish hits after chaining Begina's 3rd move, Culcha's 3rd move and a maxed battle formation), but I think the # of turns is the most important thing.

Begina is at 60, everyone else is in the mid to lower 50s. I got my first S when I was in the lower 40s, though. And I read some people on GameFAQs got theirs when they were even lower than that.

I have all the characters up to Pimrose.  I can't seem to get the missions for Kiratt, Anita, or Rimm to pop. From what I have read I thought that they would be available before I have to take out another kingdom.  I only have downed the Elf and Cat ones so far.  Any ideas?  Or should I just go take out another kingdom.

I believe his mission's name was A Hero's Duty. I think you have to have Galestar rank and have defeated the Knights of Epsiloria.

During his mission simply prevent him from reaching the throne, you don't have to defeat him or kill every enemy on the map but him, after a certain amount of turns he will start a conversation with your characters.

I played his mission twice and didnt recruit him.  I killed everyone in less then 10 turns and nothing happened.  So I replayed it and killed everyone but him and still didnt recruit him.  I have Mayura in my team.  It seems everyone has a conversation with Mayura.  A very short one.  So did I just have to prevent him from getting to the throne in 10 turns?

All you are supposed to do to get him is simply win the map. Do not attack him, do not kill him. You can kill everyone else, but its not necessary. Basically you just have to defend the throne for 10 turns (to make it easier, you can just keep your characters on the 4 red squares) and then a dialog will start where Chris starts whining about he failed his mission or something and then he will join and the battle will end.

If you don't have any Missions to do, then choose Find Work and attack a kingdom until you have the option to destroy it. Then more Missions will become available and you can recruit more characters.

1. You have to destroy the New Muromachi kingdom to unlock Hiro

2. You need to be Mercenary King rank to unlock Hiro's mission Prodigy of Blaze. Since you are Gale Star, you haven't missed it. You still need to rank up to Licensed and then after that comes Mercenary King.

3. You also need to have recruited Trick Blue, Inuou, Shimazwei, 7th Hamaou, and Gyufee II for Hiro's mission to unlock.

4. The only characters that cannot be gotten on your first playthrough are Judo and Jadou. Also, you can only get Al or Break on your first playthrough, but not both. So you have to get the other one on your second playthrough or just load an old save
